Fairbanks Residence:
The combination of three apartments was done to create one free flowing living space with over 4,800 SF connecting the 39th and 40th floors, with amazing views of Chicago. A new glass stair replaces an existing wood stair in the penthouse residence, and allows light to pour deep into the home and creates a calming void in the space. The glass is used as the primary structural material and only stainless steel is used for connection clips. The glass assembly of both tread and wall includes 3 layers of ½” lo-iron tempered glass with an AVB interlayer and hinge-like connector under tread and at connection to concrete to allow for rotation or vertical movement of up to one inch. The fireplace module incorporates the minimal gas and stone fireplace with hidden cabinet doors, an HVAC fan coil, and the LCD TV. The full height absolute-white kitchen wall also has a large working island in white oak that ends in an eat-in table. Solid wide plank hickory is used on the floor to compliment the rift-cut white oak cabinetry in the fireplace and kitchen, the tower’s concrete structure, and the plaster walls throughout painted in 4 different whites.

We have completed quite a few stair replacements in the past but this one was definitely one of the most dramatic.
The existing stairs had Oak treads and the stringers, risers, capping, and landing were all faced with black and brown granite. The rails were all very heavy gauge wrought iron.
We demolished all of the granite (what a mess) and donated the rails to someone who could utilize them. We flushed up the existing treads and laminated them with the same Hickory we were using for the flooring throughout the house. Instead of a traditional bullnose edge on the treads we decided to go with a square edge with a trim piece underneath to give it a slightly more modern look. We went with a box newel with a recessed panel, painted to match the balusters. We laminated the risers and stringers with a veneer to be painted as well. The handrails are solid Hickory made to order. The end result was a beautiful stairway and a very dramatic transformation!

This is one of our signature stair designs. The stainless stringers are out of this world as far as looks and exclusivity. No one has 4"x12" stainless steel tube stringers. The glass treads are 3 layers of 1/2" thick clear tempered panels, laminated to a thickness of over 1-1/2". The stairs are made to accept many different types of stair treads. We can easily replace the glass with Metal, Wood, Stone, Granite, Marble, and Precast Concrete,
The stainless railing with the glass panels just make the whole thing work.

A classic 1890's Victorian stair refurbishment, one of our more typical renovations. This one is in #Hoboken , NJ. Namely:
>Existing treads, in this case, replaced with new 5/4" wide plank red oak treads. In many cases we re-use the original 150 or so year old treads. We can also use white oak, mahogany, Brazilian cherry, etc.
>Stringers (diagonal main boards) remain intact.
>Risers (vertical boards between treads) replaced with new paint grade risers, 3/4" thick.
>The entire railing system is re-used, disassembled and reassembled as needed, but ultimately remains intact.
>Often, while the balusters/ spindles are uninstalled for the rebuild anyway they are indexed, taken off-site, and are spray-painted in our studio. Makes for less mess, more accurate resolve, and a much more 'uptown' appearance!
>Detail latticework on side of stringer created and installed to match the original woodwork. Small moulding under treads also replace in kind.

This staircase is more than just steps, risers and a railing. We wanted to capture another view of the lake each and every time you climb the stairs, and we knew we accomplished this when the homeowner said this was his favorite space!

"Stair treads and Risers were delivered sooner than expected. No problems with installation of them other than very time consuming cutting each tread and riser to fit each individual stair. The work was worth it though, they look great!!" Steven

This staircase made with reclaimed wood treads and risers leads down to the media room. The hardwood flooring is reclaimed from old tobacco barns.

These floating stair treads showcase the warm, glowing tones of our Antique Elm, each step highlighting rich grain patterns and natural variation that bring real depth to this modern staircase design. Paired with sleek metal brackets and a cable railing system, the open floating design lets light pass through, giving the reclaimed wood an almost sculptural presence as it winds upward.
Our Antique Elm is milled from barn timbers dating from 1820 to 1880, featuring unique marks such as wormholes, peg holes, and mortise pockets imparted by centuries old woodworking. Because of widespread Dutch Elm Disease in the 1970s, new Elm wood is nearly impossible to find, making reclaimed timbers the best option for its invitingly warm tones, bright tans, and light browns with a subtle red tinge that gives the wood an almost iridescent shimmer.
Whether you are a homebuilder, a home remodeling contractor, or a homeowner looking for a modern staircase with real warmth and history, Manomin Resawn Timbers has the Antique Elm stair treads to complete your design. Designers looking to pair reclaimed wood with clean, modern lines will find great inspiration in this floating stair design. "I purchased the Hickory stair tread and risers and they came quicker than the delivery date promised!. There was no damage and no need for further sanding. I simply applied one coat of "natural" color stain and 3 coats of clear satin and they were ready to cut to size and install. The cutting was time consuming because each step had to be cut individually to fit the location it was going into, but the end result was fantastic!!. I recommend Hardware Lumber for anyone thinking of redoing their stairs!!!" Steve
