Supporting wall between the kitchen and dining was removed as was the drop ceiling in the kitchen to vault it. 2lb spray foam used in the ceiling. Huge 9'x5' quartz island with marble effect was chosen ($4500) to keep it bright andis perfect of entertaining. Marble herringbone tile for backsplash with dark grey quartz countertop for contrast. Storage draw on the outside of island for additional storage and a double bowl undermount black granite sink with touch tap,, DW, 3-compartment garbage/recycling pullout & wine fridge are on the other side for full functionality. White shaker style kitchen cabinets were chosen with black hardware for that industrial feel. A small workspace was created for the kids to do homework while preparing dinner or for a small computer/office space. Industrial & contemporary fixtures used including an oversized clock give the space a warm yet fun feel. We are not afraid of colour and the rich blue wall make the kitchen pop out! New french doors were put ($1900 each set) in to replace the old wooden ones and the kitchen one was re-positioned away from the corner to maximize light and space for the desk. Overhaul Converts Classic Rambler to A Modern Yet Classic Family Home in Fairfax This 1970 rambler in middle of old town in Fairfax City has been home to a growing family of five. Ready for a massive overhaul, the family reached out to Michael Nash Design Build & Homes for assistance. Eligible for a special Fairfax City Renaissance program, this project was awarded special attention and favorable financing. We removed the entire roof and added a bump up, second story three-bedroom, two bathroom and loft addition. The main level was reformatted to eliminate the smallest bedroom and split the space among adjacent bedroom and the main living room. The partition walls between the living room and dining room and the partition wall between dining room and kitchen were eliminated, making space for a new enlarged kitchen. The outside brick chimney was rebuilt and extended to pass into the new second floor roof lines. Flu lines for heater and furnace were eliminated. A furnace was added in the new attic space for second floor heating and cooling, while a new hot water heater and furnace was re-positioned and installed in the basement. Second floor was furnished with its own laundry room. A new stairway to the second floor was designed and built were furnace chase used to be, opening up into a loft area for a kids study or gaming area. The master bedroom suite includes a large walk-in closet, large stoned shower, slip-free standing tub, separate commode area, double vanities and more amenities. A kid’s bathroom was built in the middle of upstairs hallway. The exterior of this home was wrapped around with cement board siding, maintenance free trims and gutters, and life time architectural shingles. Added to a new front porch were Trex boards and stone and tapered style columns. Double staircase entrance from front and side yard made this residence a stand out home of the community. This remodeled two-story colonial home with its country style front porch, five bedrooms, four and half bathrooms and second floor laundry room, will be this family’s home for many years to come. Happier than before, this family moved back into this Extreme Makeover Home to love every inch of their new home.

In the living room, we added a dramatic overhead pendant light, re-positioned one of their favorite art pieces, installed new window shades, and reconfigured the layout for a more open flow. For furniture, we were able to re-use the coffee table, and replace the rest of the furnishings with a fresh new look.

In the primary bedroom, our focus was on creating a space that felt both elevated and comfortable with a masculine edge. We brightened the room with a dynamic abstract wallpaper mural, introducing movement and visual depth. The large existing mirror was repositioned between the windows to expand the sense of scale, making the room feel even more spacious. Leather seating and a bench add strength and richness, while the channeled upholstered bed and plush bedding soften the overall feel. Updated wood flooring, new nightstands, and a custom built-in infuse warmth and ground the space in natural elements. A plush area rug provides comfort underfoot, while woven window treatments add texture and complement the darker tones in the wallpaper. The design carefully balances black and gray tones with bright accents to maintain an airy feel. Gold finishes and mixed metals were layered throughout, tying into the home’s broader design palette. A new ceiling fan with wood-toned blades harmonizes with the natural elements and furnishings. The result is a bedroom that feels polished, grounded, and richly layered with materials and textures.

Full condo renovation on a budget: replaced carpet and laminate flooring with continuous LVP throughout; painted kitchen cabinets; added tile backsplash in kitchen; replaced appliances, sink, and faucet; replaced light fixtures and repositioned/added lights; selected all new furnishings- some brand new, some salvaged from second-hand sellers. Goal of this project was to stretch the dollars, so we worked hard to put money into the areas with highest return and get creative where possible. Phase 2 plan is to replace additional light fixtures and repaint more areas.

As a result, central to this renovation was the need to create a floor plan with a staircase to access all floors, space for a master bedroom and spacious ensuite on the second floor. The kitchen was also repositioned from the back of the house to the front. It features a curved leather banquette nestled in the bay window, floor to ceiling millwork with a full pantry, integrated appliances, panel ready Sub Zero and expansive storage. Custom fir windows and an oversized lift and slide glass door were used across the back of the house to bring in the light, call attention to the lush surroundings and provide access to the massive deck clad in thermally modified ash. Now reclaimed as a single family home, the dwelling includes 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, a main floor mud room and an open, airy yoga retreat on the third floor with walkout deck and sweeping views of the backyard.

This 1950's split-level ranch house was completely renovated to meet the needs of a growing family. The central roof was raised to admit generous natural ambient light to the kitchen and living spaces. New metal windows were enlarged and repositioned to capture distant views. Interior finishes were replaced and the mechanical system revised to provide radiantly heated floors. The project was undertaken while Jim was a partner with Richard Brown Architects, AIA, LLP.

Featured in Dwell, Hacienda Granada is an eclectic modern residence designed by Working Holiday Studio that subtly combines the Spanish influences of a Mexican hacienda with Scandinavian minimalism and features All Weather Architectual Aluminun custom windows and doors. Carlos Nuade and Whitney Brown run Working Holiday, a multi disciplinary creative studio based in Los Angeles that boasts a portfolio of several renovation projects across Southern California. Originally built in 1962, the 2,762-square-foot residence with 4 bedrooms and 2.5 baths was not the couple’s dream home but they saw potential in its vaulted ceilings, ample-sized kitchen, backyard pool and large garage and more importantly, they found a space where they could infuse with their own personal history and distinct taste. "Our style is very modern and minimalist," Carlos explains. "But we still wanted to include some of the warmth, accents, and tones from traditional Spanish architecture." Carlos and Whitney chose All Weather Series 5000 casement and fixed windows with SDL's to infuse the home with the Hacienda vibe. They replaced the existing patio entry door with expansive Series 8100 Multi Slide Doors that connect to the living and dining room. The couple opened up the kitchen by adding an All Weather Series 7000 French Doors and repositioned the island so you can see into the house when they are cooking. They also reshaped most of the interior doorways, creating arches to enhance the Spanish-Mexican vibe. All Weather was honored to be selected for Hacienda Granada because Carlos and Whitney treat their projects like showrooms and they only bring on brands they like and curate the space accordingly.

The client's eclectic artwork was re-positioned based on the newly laid out space. The elegant gold leaf wall covering was selected as a neutral backdrop for the vibrant colors of the art.

Once a forgotten pass-through cluttered with debris and two unused gates, this side yard was completely reimagined into a peaceful, purposeful garden path. Reused flagstone from a small, underused patio now forms a meandering walkway that connects the front of the house to the backyard. A large ceramic pot, previously hidden in a corner, was repositioned as a sculptural focal point—now beautifully visible from the dining room. Custom-designed cable-wire trellises add a clean architectural line to the fence, offering support for the beautiful flowering vines. Shade-loving plants complete the transformation, bringing life and texture to this newly functional, artful space.

Inspiration for a modern entryway remodel in Boston

Oakland, CA: Addition and remodel to a rustic ranch home. The existing house had lovely woodwork but was dark and enclosed. The house borders on a regional park and our clients wanted to open up the space to the expansive yard, to allow views, bring in light, and modernize the spaces. New wide exterior accordion doors, with a thin screen that pulls across the opening, connect inside to outside. We retained the existing exposed redwood rafters, and repeated the pattern in the new spaces, while adding lighter materials to brighten the spaces. We positioned exterior doors for views through the whole house. Ceilings were raised and doorways repositioned to make a complicated and closed-in layout simpler and more coherent.
