Located in Bowden Rach, a desirable neighborhood near Downtown San Luis Obispo, The Smith residence represents a fusion of styles and a unique program. The clients came with the request for a modestly sized living space and an oversized garage/workshop big enough to house the activities for all of their hobbies. The clients’ pastimes include welding, furniture making, and working on cars and motorcycles. The design solution is a 2600 SF residence and 1200 SF garage. Architecturally, the contemporary saw tooth and butterfly rooflines paired with traditional detailing and materials provided the clients with the unique look they desired. On the exterior, the building is clad in smooth trowel stucco, corrugated metal and slate tile. On the interior, stained concrete floors, exposed structure and custom eucalyptus cabinetry and casework provide for a unique blend of industrial and warm traditional.

This mood board represents a client who has a midcentury modern design style but wants an eclectic boho vibe in their space. A variety of patterns, textures, shapes, and colors add fun to the space.

Sofa with chairs on either side and coffee table that had a natural feel. Using the rug, sculpture/pottery and the garden colors as my guide is how I chose my color palette. I soften with soft blues, tans, greys, and punches of a persimmon red. The walls are painted with Sherwin Williams 7051 Analytical Gray. They commissioned an artist they knew to paint a picture of a cityscape (reminding them of their travels) with colors really tying in all of the details in their collection of sculpture and pottery surrounding it. I added some fun patterned pillows to go their global theme and opted to place them in more mixed order to feel less formal. Books that represent their love of art and travel were used to add a decorative touch to the room.

Suddenly, all of the unevenness turn into grains and textures, appearing on the wood planks. The story contains small rural villages, huge ruts, and the warmth of that stone fireplace. The coloring process of this type of flooring is unique, using the reactive stain coloring technique, wood’s natural colors and grains react differently to the water-based environment-friendly chemicals, such color variations represent wood’s natural characteristics. In coming to Minnesota from Iceland, the owners of Home 4 found themselves more than 3,000 miles away from home, hoping to build something new – literally and figuratively – that would feel like home for their family of five. They purchased a scenic piece of land in Rochester and identified a general idea of the spaces they would need, but they struggled with how to define a sense of character that would incorporate their culture and identity into the design. The architect-led design team was tasked with creating a house that would help establish the homeowners’ roots in a new country while still recalling familiar comforts of their heritage.
