Inspiration for a mid-century modern dining room remodel in San Francisco

Having moved from a smaller home into a much larger space, our clients needed help picking out finishes like flooring, paint colors and lighting. We then went on to furnish and accessorize all their main living spaces and bedrooms in a style that was both modern yet timeless. We incorporated the work of independent local artists to create a layered home that represented our clients and their style. We are so proud of the haven we’ve created!

This project represents an increasingly popular type of project - combining 2 bedrooms into a single master suite. The house is a 1910 craftsman, with 4 bedrooms on the second floor. Typical of older homes, the master bedroom had a very small bathroom, and very little closet space. The owners decided to sacrifice an adjacent guest bedroom to create a spacious master suite. The new rooms include a large bathroom, with hers and his vanities, separate toilet room, custom tile shower and soaking tub. The extra space also allowed us to install a luxurious custom walk-in closet. Design Criteria: - Increase size and utility of closet space. - Create a large, luxury bathroom with distinctly separate hers/his spaces. Special Features: - Custom tile shower, with frameless glass door - Platform soaking tub w/ custom tile deck - His/Hers vanities with quartz countertops. - Separate toilet room. - Room-sized walk-in closet with custom cabinet system. - Custom 5-Panel doors and built-up mouldings to match the original woodwork.

Interior Designer Rochelle Roos, features our Polywood shutters in her beautiful living room. Featuring a divider rail which gives you the option to keep the top section of your shutters open for lighting and the bottom section closed for privacy. Additionally the shutters she chose also feature a hidden tilt rod that represent a cleaner look, to open a close the shutters simply move lover and the rest will follow. A unique three-panel bi-fold door, separates the indoor-outdoor space; on nice days, plenty of natural ventilation flows through the house. Opening the sunroom, living room and kitchen spaces enables a free dialog between rooms. The kitchen level sits above the sunroom and living room giving it a perch as the heart of the home. Dressed in maple and white, the cabinet color palette is in sync with the subtle value and warmth of nature. The cooktop wall was designed as a piece of furniture; the maple cabinets frame the inserted white cabinet wall. The subtle mosaic backsplash with a hint of green, represents a delicate leaf.

An over scaled family room with dark original shadow box paneling, large Carthage stone fireplace, and leaded windows, required a design esthetic that paid homage to the history of the home, yet created a space for entertaining large groups, while at the same time feeling warm and comfortable, and would also allow the homeowners to take Sunday naps in the often unused room. With the entry to the home also included in the overall dimensions, creating definition without walls was the challenge. Using an antique table that was purchased by the client many years ago as an entry table was the perfect answer. We took the Italian chandelier from the dining room, had it refinished to look old, and re-hung it as the entry fixture. An antique, nearly 18’ foot rug was found, and was the anchor to the room. Over scaled sofa’s, large cocktail truck, antique console tables, new “shiny” lamps, modern tables, and plush pillows all add to the warmth of this space. The room was also painted a warm gray/green to pull all the warm colors and textures together. This home sits on the open water of Tampa Bay so in essence it has 2 front elevations: one that faces the street and one that faces the boats along the waterway. This shot of the rear elevation shows how the massing of the house cascades down and is integrated into the pool to the point that it seems the house actually “grows” from the pool.
