The commission consisted of the design of a new English Manor House on a secluded 24 acre plot of land. The property included water features, rolling grass areas at the front and a steep section of woods at the rear. The project required the procurement of permits from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Conservation and a variance from the Mendham Zoning Board of Appeals. The stately Colonial Manor is entirely clad in Pennsylvania stone, has slate roofs, copper gutters and leaders, and lavish interior finishes. It comprises six Bedroom Suites, each with its own Bathroom, plus an apartment over the garages, and eight garage bays. The house was designed with energy efficiency in mind, and incorporates the highest R-value insulation throughout, low-E, argon-filled insulating windows and patio doors, a geothermal HVAC system, and energy-efficient appliances.

This is the custom wine rack design on the right wall. At the topmost section, you can see the wine cooling unit concealed in a wooden grill. Below it are individual wine racks. The middle section consists of a high reveal display, which highlights some of the owner's wines. More single storage slots are provided in the racking at the bottom section of the right wall racking. We created a stellar custom small wine cellar design for a couple who had lost their home and wine collection in the wildfires in Rancho Bernardo in North County San Diego, California in 2007. We encountered some challenges in this project. The room where the client wanted to build the wine cellar was relatively small, and we needed to hide a beam that runs through the left wall. We provided a wine storage solution that solved the construction issues and met our client's requirements. This glass enclosed, contemporary yet rustic small wine room features magnum storage, individual bottle redwood wine racking, diamond bins, wine case storage, horizontal displays, as well as a section in the wall for liquor storage. "TaylorPro remodeled our kitchen, replacing cabinets, countertops and appliances. Keeping with the same footprint of our original kitchen and keeping our original travertine floors, Kerry Taylor helped us select a palette of rich, natural colors and materials--mocha-maple glazed cabinets, handsome granite and polished travertine backsplash tiles--to create a warm and beautiful new kitchen. He offered excellent design suggestions for placements of cabinetry and appliances. He recommended and implemented window trim enhancements as well as paint color and lighting design that brought the kitchen and attached family room together with a modern and very warm look. He created a rich, textured backsplash behind the stovetop that enhances the modern stainless steel vent hood. We couldn't be more pleased with the character and design of the kitchen and family room suite. To begin with, Kerry gave us a detailed estimate covering the likely costs of labor, cabinetry, granite, tile backsplash, construction materials and appliances. His estimate for labor, granite and tile turned out to be ""spot-on"" accurate. Much to our surprise, for example, the granite slabs we selected from Daltile turned out to be exactly the price Kerry had estimated when evaluating the level of materials we would likely install in our kitchen. Kerry kept to his original labor costs, to the penny. Each week, he provided us with an invoice that showed, in percentages, exactly how much labor had been performed that week and how much remained to be done in future weeks. The original bathroom in this Toronto home consisted of both a small shower and a large corner bath. And although the number of windows with southern and western exposure added considerable light to the space, it contributed to limitations with placement of the double vanity. Dave and Jenni decided to add a larger double vanity with an adjacent infrared built in sauna, along with a stand up shower. The style of the bathroom was to be kept clean and simple and tile on the majority of wall surfaces achieved this requirement. The most notable feature of the bathroom is the built-in shelving above the sauna, which was created to avoid a large obtrusive flat surface above it, and instead add space for ornamentation and towels. Having lived in the home for decades, the goal wasn’t to start over—it was to rework the home into a more functional, comfortable space that could support the years ahead. The scope included a full exterior masonry refresh, where the front layer of brick was removed and replaced while maintaining the integrity of the original structure. The carport was fully enclosed and integrated into the home as a garage, and a new roof tied everything together with consistent detailing and long-term performance in mind. Inside, the layout was carefully reworked to introduce a new primary ensuite and completely renovate the main bathroom. Plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems were updated throughout, with a focus on accessibility, ease of use, and everyday comfort. The result is a home that feels both familiar and elevated—where thoughtful construction and refined design come together to support long-term living without compromising character.

Located in rural western Sonoma County, this artist studio and garage are placed adjacent to a modest late 19th century farmhouse. The design envisioned a simple space, which would integrate with and embrace the landscape, while capturing the vocabulary of farm structures. Both buildings consist of a pre-manufactured Quonset hut ribbed roof, raised on a six foot board-formed concrete stem wall. The two buildings have end walls with 10 foot by 12 foot openings, a glass garage door and three folding patio doors surrounded by cement panel walls. Quonset ribs are a self-supporting structure of galvanized metal. It was initially assumed that such a roof structure would save costs, but that ultimately was not true due to the modifications necessary to make it completely watertight, rural fire zone requirements and energy efficiency measures. The concrete stem walls are exposed board form and the garage features an imbedded stone wall sculpture from Borobudur, Indonesia. The garage building is oversized to allow for a future glass studio or workshop at the rear. A fiberglass skylight is integrated into the ribs and provides additional daylight. The second building, which functions as an art studio, has insulated walls and ceilings with double glazed windows and doors. The vaulted roof and its insulation is sheathed with ash plywood with integrated LED lighting at the perimeter. To maintain the light throughout the studio structure, translucent plastic panels were utilized above the concrete for the areas enclosing the toilet and shower space and the service sink areas. The sliding bar wood and metal barn door were reused from the farmhouse. Sustainability was considered from the design, selection of materials, energy conservation and ongoing construction waste recycling. The design began with a simple form, allowing for cross ventilation and daylighting. A minimal palette of materials were selected while maximizing their use. Materials were chosen for their multi-use characteristics, to be used as structure and well as finish, where possible, such as the concrete walls, manufactured Quonset hut roofing system and cement panels. The ribs of the vaulted roof system sit atop 10” concrete stem which adds to the thermal mass of the building. The garage building is unconditioned allowing for a single layer of materials. The artist studio is well insulated, double glazed with low-e glass; a hydronic radiant heat system supplied by a 99.8 efficient on-demand water heater is powered by photovoltaic panels.

The clients for this project wanted a clean lined form, an open floor plan and nothing non-essential to daily life. They also required their home be under 2,500 square feet for their family of four. Exterior materials consist of untreated cedar siding and galvanized corrugated metal. The heavy gauge “horse fence” guard rails allow an unobstructed view to the adjacent pond. This project was our first installed green roof, and after much research we decided upon a modular system. Other sustainable components include day-lighting, super-insulation, on demand water heaters, plans for a water collection cistern, radiant floor heat, gabion retaining walls filled with local rock, FSC certified flooring, reclaimed structural members, and infrastructure for an active solar collection system. The owners have since installed a remotely located photovoltaic array.

The Setup For this primary bathroom project, the homeowners wanted to transform their large, T-shaped bathroom into a functional, multi-purpose sanctuary. The existing layout was inefficient, with a bulky built-in tub, a closed-off shower, and an awkward footprint that limited practical use. This remodel also presented a unique challenge – the homeowners wanted to use the space for workouts as well. The design needed to maximize the large open area in the middle of the T, providing enough room for yoga and light free-weight exercises while maintaining the bathroom’s aesthetic and functionality. Design objectives: Expand and brighten the shower area without major layout changes Replace the oversized built-in tub with a sleek freestanding alternative Create a flexible space for workouts while maintaining the bathroom’s design integrity Address cold flooring with added comfort solutions Enhance lighting for both beauty and functionality Incorporate storage for workout equipment and everyday essentials Integrate natural elements to accommodate the homeowners’ love of plants The Remodel Design challenges to be solved: Shower Expansion – The homeowners want a more open, spa-like shower but don’t want to dramatically alter the footprint. Workout Integration – Balancing fitness functionality with a serene bathroom design will require creative layout adjustments. Storage Solutions – With workout gear to stow away, the space needs discrete and versatile storage options. Lighting – Enhancing both natural and artificial lighting to brighten the large space. Cold Floors – Positioned above the garage, the bathroom tends to feel colder than the adjacent primary bedroom. A solution is needed to add warmth and comfort during use, without the need to reconfigure the home’s overall heating system. The Renewed Space Design solutions: Spa-Like Shower Expansion – Removing a wall and replacing it with glass transformed the shower into an open, airy retreat, allowing natural light to flow freely through the space. A curved black river rock floor and neutral linear wall tiles add warmth and texture, while carefully placed niche lighting enhances the tranquil, luxurious atmosphere. Workout-Friendly Layout – A custom full-length mirror was strategically placed to accommodate multiple uses, creating a fitness studio-like experience for yoga or light weight training. The mirror’s size and positioning allow for clear visibility during workouts, while also enhancing the room by adding light and a greater sense of depth. Custom Storage Solutions – A custom cabinet with a wood top was crafted to discreetly store workout equipment, preserving the clean, open feel of the space. Its design not only enhances functionality but also creates a sense of symmetry, bringing visual balance and cohesion to the overall layout. Enhanced Lighting – Replacing the shower wall with glass, installing a full-length mirror, and incorporating vanity mirrors with built-in lighting dramatically brighten the space. LED strip lighting under the cabinets, along the tub half wall, and in both the side and shower niches adds layered illumination, enhancing both function and ambiance. This two-bedroom detached accessory dwelling unit (DADU) responds to a small footprint creating a new 800 square-foot structure in the backyard of an existing house. The size led to designing the home vertically, as a small two-story dwelling. To create a taller, more dynamic living space, the ceiling is vaulted following a gabled roof line. Two bedrooms, located mostly below grade to maximize the amount of rentable square footage, have window wells to bring in ample natural light and provide required window exits. The main floor consists of a vaulted living and kitchen spaces with a small bath and entry. The landscape surrounding the new dwelling creates an inviting setting, both distinguishing and complementing the unit from the primary home within the same property.
