This is a New England beach house that is regularly confronted by severe nor'easters. The task was to provide a face-lift that could withstand the windblown salt and sand.
The existing exterior cladding consisted of 3 layers of wood clapboard and vertical shiplap siding.
The seal around the windows was significantly compromised causing a cold, drafty house to require extensive heating and expense.
We removed the 2 outer layers of existing siding to access the window flashing, which we sealed with membrane flashing. We then applied fiber cement panels and covering the vertical seams with Atlantic cedar battens.

Based on extensive interviews with our clients, one of our challenges of this job was to provide a practical and useable home for a couple who worked hard and played hard. They wanted a home that would be comfortable for them and since they entertained often, they required function yet desired drama and style. We worked with them from the ground up, selecting finishes, materials and fixtures for the entire home. We achieved comfort by using deep furniture pieces with white goose down cushions, suitable for curling up on. Colors and materials were selected based on rich tones and textures to provide drama while keeping with the practicality they desired. We also used eclectic pieces like the oversized chair and ottoman in the great room to add an unexpected yet comfortable touch. The chair is of a Balinese style with a unique wood frame offering a graceful balance of curved and straight lines. The floor plan was created to be conducive to traffic flow, necessary for entertaining.
The other challenge we faced, was to give each room its own identity while maintaining a consistent flow throughout the home. Each space shares a similar color palette, attention to detail and uniqueness, while the furnishings, draperies and accessories provide individuality to each room.

We had the pleasure of working with the Vigliotti family to create a beautiful new 4-season room addition.
This project began with the careful demolition of existing structures to make way for a space designed to be enjoyed year-round. From the outset, we focused on maintaining transparency and open communication, ensuring the Vigliottis were involved and informed at every step. Despite the challenges posed by large rocks and ledges in the ground, our team expertly navigated the terrain to ensure a solid foundation, remaining committed to delivering a space that not only met but exceeded their expectations.
Key features of this addition include:
• Energy Efficiency: High-efficiency windows and spray foam insulation were installed throughout to maximize energy savings.
• Mudroom: A practical and welcoming mudroom area was created, perfect for managing the transition from outdoors to indoors.
• Composite Deck: The new composite deck, complete with all required flashing and solid PVC skirts, promises durability and low maintenance for years to come.
• Modern Lighting: We installed all-new electrical systems, featuring recessed LED ceiling lights that provide a sleek and modern touch.
• Exposed Beams & Cathedral Ceiling: The room’s exposed finished beams and cathedral ceiling add a sense of grandeur and spaciousness, making the space feel open and airy.
• Integrated HVAC: The addition was seamlessly connected to the existing central air system, ensuring consistent comfort throughout the home.
• Patio Finish: A beautifully finished patio area was added to complement the inviting backyard, creating a perfect space for the family to enjoy outdoor gatherings.
The Vigliottis were highly engaged throughout the project, and their kind words about our honesty, trustworthiness, and customer-focused approach mean the world to us.
In their review, they mentioned that they’ve worked with several contractors over the years, but Beroli stands out as the best. We are incredibly proud to have earned such high praise and to have delivered a home addition that the Vigliotti family can enjoy for years to come.

The Camargue® is an innovative terrace covering equipped with a bladed roof system, that can be closed off on both sides with wind-resistant Fixscreens ®, glass sliding walls, Loggia® sliding panels or a combination of the former. The roof consists of extruded aluminium blades that can be tilted to adjust sunprotection and ventilation as required. During showers, concealed guide water channels drain the water towards the columns. This water drainage also operates when the blades are opened up when it has stopped raining, and this ensures that the furniture on the patio remains protected.

The Science of Light and Learning
To understand the relationship between lighting and learning, it’s critical to grasp the concept of correlated colour temperature (CCT). CCT refers to the warmth or coolness of light, measured in Kelvin (K). Lower CCTs (around 3000K) provide a warm, cosy atmosphere, while higher CCTs (5000K or above) emit a cool, daylight-like glow. Studies have shown that cool white light, which mimics natural daylight, can increase alertness and mood, contributing to improved cognitive performance. LED lighting, with its ability to produce this desired CCT, makes an ideal choice for educational settings.
LED Lighting: Brightening the Future of Education
Energy Efficiency and Cost Effectiveness
One of the main advantages of LED lighting is its energy efficiency. Traditional lighting solutions like fluorescent and incandescent bulbs consume much more energy to produce the same amount of light as LEDs, which is not only environmentally harmful but also financially costly. Switching to LED lights can result in substantial cost savings for schools, enabling them to redirect funds to other critical areas of education.
Durability and Longevity
LED lights are renowned for their durability and longevity. They have a significantly longer lifespan compared to conventional lights, which means less frequent replacement and reduced maintenance costs. This durability also minimises disruptions caused by light failure, providing a consistent, well-lit learning environment.
Improved Visibility and Reduced Eye Strain
With their superior colour rendering index (CRI), LED lights render colours more accurately, leading to improved visibility. This is particularly beneficial in educational settings, where activities often require distinguishing fine details and colours. LED lights also emit less glare than traditional lighting solutions, reducing eye strain and fatigue. This can lead to better concentration and increased comfort for both students and teachers.
Incorporating LED Lighting in Classrooms: Practical Considerations
When transitioning to LED lighting in classrooms, a few key factors need to be taken into account. Firstly, the lighting design should ensure an even distribution of light, preventing shadowy or overly bright spots that could distract or discomfort students. Secondly, the integration of dimming capabilities can provide flexibility, allowing educators to adjust the lighting level based on the task at hand. Finally, lighting controls can be used to take advantage of natural light, automatically dimming or turning off the LEDs when sufficient daylight is present.
Conclusion: The Bright Promise of LED Lighting in Education
As education systems continue to evolve, it’s imperative to keep sight of the physical factors that significantly impact learning, one of which is lighting. LED technology, with its myriad benefits, offers an innovative and effective way to enhance the quality of lighting in classrooms. By prioritising investments in such improvements, we can take a significant step towards creating an optimised learning environment that nurtures the educational success of future generations.

Nestled in the hills of Orinda, California, this 1951 residence is one of only seven extant homes, now known as “The Magnificent Seven”, designed by architect Olof Dahlstrand, a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright. With its low-slung rooflines, natural materials, and deep integration with the sloping landscape, the home is a pristine example of mid-century modern design inspired by Wright’s organic principles. Over the years, prior homeowners have emphasized preservation, ensuring that the house remained relatively untouched. Each owner has respected the original architecture and stayed true to Dahlstrand’s intent. When a family of five—two college-aged sons and a middle school-aged daughter—acquired the property, they were captivated by its history, legacy of care, and architectural significance. While they appreciated Dahlstrand’s original vision, they also recognized the need to adapt the home for contemporary living while preserving its design integrity.
The remodel was conceived as a thoughtful response to the past—an effort to bring the house into the 21st century without compromising its soul. The primary mandate was to maintain architectural continuity while improving the functionality, comfort, and livability for a modern family. The design team—architects and contractor alike—worked with a shared reverence for the original architecture, allowing that mindset to guide even the most technical or pragmatic decisions.
A key objective was to increase natural light in the kitchen—a departure from Wrightian principles of enclosed, intimate cooking spaces—while maintaining the home’s architectural language. The kitchen was reconfigured to foster a stronger connection to adjacent living spaces while retaining the underlying concept of spatial separation. One of the most transformative architectural changes was the removal of a ridge beam that was originally planned to remain visible through the kitchen. During construction, the team collaborated on a better solution: a wide-flanged steel beam concealed within the roof envelope. This subtle move preserved the clean lines and ceiling continuity, a modern update carried out with utmost respect for the existing framework.
The home’s original powder room, previously accessible only through the kitchen, was relocated for better flow and privacy. A new powder room was carved out of former kitchen cabinetry—a narrow, interior space that could have felt dark and enclosed. To avoid this, the design extended the line of original transom windows into the new powder room and added a skylight above the vanity. The result is a bright and airy space that feels consistent with the rest of the home. Other updates included the installation of new solid-core interior doors with veneers carefully matched to the original mahogany, enhancing the continuity of the interiors. Even smaller decisions, such as placing the door knobs at 42 inches high, mirrored the original proportions. Every choice reflected a shared belief between the architect, contractor, and client: that new work should serve the integrity of the old.
The home’s extensive interior redwood millwork and paneling was meticulously restored. Where new materials were introduced—such as the replacement redwood soffit paneling—the contractor took pains to find finish nails that matched the original, rather than using modern equivalents. This level of craftsmanship and collaboration defined the project. It extended even to the detailing of a blind door to the new powder room, which had to disappear into the existing redwood board-and-batten wall. It was a team effort: the owner found a suitable handle, the architects devised the custom in-swing mechanism, and the contractor executed it so the door aligned precisely with the battens. Throughout, the homeowners were deeply engaged in the design process. One, a meticulous design enthusiast, focused on aesthetic integrity and historic detail. The other brought a practical and function-driven perspective, ensuring that new fixtures and materials would be durable and require minimal maintenance.
While the home’s location posed no major site challenges, sustainability was a key concern. The team upgraded the roof insulation, installed solar panels with battery storage, and added ductless mini-split cooling systems. Lighting was another area where modern technology was woven into a historic framework: new square LED fixtures echo the original custom perimeter soffit lights, maintaining the design language while offering advanced performance.
A planned expansion of a bedroom into suite with a bathroom had to be shelved due to budget constraints and the high cost of below-grade foundation work. Still, the team focused their efforts on making the most of the existing footprint, resolving constraints through design ingenuity rather than adding square footage. This renovation represents a collaborative achievement in preserving and evolving a historically significant home. Every decision was shaped by a shared ethos among clients, architects, and contractor: to maintain the home’s architectural soul while updating it for contemporary life. The result is a timeless modernist residence that continues Olof Dahlstrand’s legacy, remaining grounded in nature, craftsmanship, and human-scale design.

This extensive remodel by Bridges Construction was about more than just creating a beautiful new kitchen—it was about completely transforming the feel and flow of the home. We started by opening up the kitchen, removing walls and an existing peninsula that had closed in the space. This dramatically opened up the kitchen and allowed us to create a large, functional island that now serves as the centerpiece of the room. We also eliminated an existing pantry to create a more consistent flow of cabinetry throughout the kitchen. Behind the scenes, this project required careful planning and precision. To relocate the plumbing and electrical for the new island, we had to cut into the slab foundation while carefully working around post-tension cables.
The homeowners made some fantastic design choices, selecting Whitewash White Oak cabinetry by Crown Cabinets, paired with beautiful, light-colored Taj Mahal polished stone countertops. A complementary backsplash ties the warm tones of the cabinetry and countertops together beautifully. But the transformation didn’t stop in the kitchen. We also remodeled the fireplace with split-face stone ledger panels, adding texture and a natural focal point to the living space. To complete the look throughout the home, we installed new LVP flooring and tall baseboards, creating a cohesive, updated feel from room to room. The result is a home that feels more open, cohesive, functional, and inviting.

To create a soothing oasis for our busy bicoastal client, like we did for her Bay Area residence, we took cues from her petite NYC apartment’s architectural features and floor to ceiling windows as a foundational starting point for a luxurious interior design upgrade boasting brilliant décor and personality.
And to make the space have a similar feel to her San Francisco home, Décor Aid’s interior designer Victoria C. set about to create the same sense of comfort and consistency that we did for her first project with us.
Centered around her modern art collection, our client wanted a modern, fun, comfortable, and casual interior design upgrade for her apartment that boasted a light and airy feel along with a pulled-together sense of everyday urban glamor.
From room to room, Victoria’s main objective was to create a quick budget-friendly turnaround with furnishings that were neither too precious or required custom construction – everything needed to be ready on the go as you can imagine for a client with such a heavy, frequent commute.
For the living room, a transitional sectional in a rich purple hue was brought in for an easy sense of relaxed drama, was finished with pillows in complimentary jewel tones, and punctuated with a graphic cubist wall hanging featuring tonal shades of matte and muted gold.
In order to break away from the rooms angular lined furnishings, a rounded glass-topped coffee table was sourced to also make the living room appear larger than it is. And a white sculptural Eames chaise was introduced as a conversation starter and juxtaposition to the indulgent color scheme of the other furnishings.
For the den, Victoria placed a playful boldly hued collaged wall hanging above a somewhat traditional gray couch to emphasize a non-fussy approach to the room’s décor. While a modern rustic shelving unit was introduced to do triple duty as an entertainment center, a mini-library, and a spot to highlight decorative objects and collectibles.

Our doors have several superior features:
- Metal-plastic doors – lighter than iron and steel doors, but no less strong and reliable! Scratch and impact resistance, easy of care and environmentally friendly
- In principle, we use only all-welded reinforcement, 1/10" thick (!) for the entrance doors. Such reinforcement is a necessary condition for real burglary resistance.
- We use an aluminum threshold with a special thermal insert that cuts off the cold from the room. We also complete with an amplifier to securely fix the bottom of the door and cut off the cold.
- HPL sandwich panel, consists of foamed extruded Styrofoam, with rigid PVC overlays high pressure on both sides.
- Energy savings double-glazed safety windows.
- Quality insulation serves to reduce unwanted external noise, as well as protect against extreme heat, and severe cold.
Introducing the Manux collection of modern metal-plastic doors in a stunning white silk color. These doors are expertly crafted from durable metal-plastic material and feature European roller hinges and an aluminum threshold, ensuring both longevity and security for your home.

From Attic to Awesome
Many of the classic Tudor homes in Minneapolis are defined as 1 ½ stories. The ½ story is actually an attic; a space just below the roof and with a rough floor often used for storage and little more. The owners were looking to turn their attic into about 900 sq. ft. of functional living/bedroom space with a big bath, perfect for hosting overnight guests.
This was a challenging project, considering the plan called for raising the roof and adding two large shed dormers. A structural engineer was consulted, and the appropriate construction measures were taken to address the support necessary from below, passing the required stringent building codes.
The remodeling project took about four months and began with reframing many of the roof support elements and adding closed cell spray foam insulation throughout to make the space warm and watertight during cold Minnesota winters, as well as cool in the summer.
You enter the room using a stairway enclosed with a white railing that offers a feeling of openness while providing a high degree of safety. A short hallway leading to the living area features white cabinets with shaker style flat panel doors – a design element repeated in the bath. Four pairs of South facing windows above the cabinets let in lots of South sunlight all year long.
The 130 sq. ft. bath features soaking tub and open shower room with floor-to-ceiling 2-inch porcelain tiling. The custom heated floor and one wall is constructed using beautiful natural stone. The shower room floor is also the shower’s drain, giving this room an open feeling while providing the ultimate functionality. The other half of the bath consists of a toilet and pedestal sink flanked by two white shaker style cabinets with Granite countertops. A big skylight over the tub and another north facing window brightens this room and highlights the tiling with a shade of green that’s pleasing to the eye.
The rest of the remodeling project is simply a large open living/bedroom space. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the room is the way the roof ties into the ceiling at many angles – a necessity because of the way the home was originally constructed. The before and after photos show how the construction method included the maximum amount of interior space, leaving the room without the “cramped” feeling too often associated with this kind of remodeling project.
Another big feature of this space can be found in the use of skylights. A total of six skylights – in addition to eight South-facing windows – make this area warm and bright during the many months of winter when sunlight in Minnesota comes at a premium.
The main living area offers several flexible design options, with space that can be used with bedroom and/or living room furniture with cozy areas for reading and entertainment. Recessed lighting on dimmers throughout the space balances daylight with room light for just the right atmosphere.
The space is now ready for decorating with original artwork and furnishings. How would you furnish this space?

This small suburban yard was filled by a large swimming pool. The homeowner is extremely sensitive to the sun so she decided to trade out the pool for this intimate garden space. When this client is not traveling, she is hosting visitors, watching friends’ dogs, or hanging out with her grandchildren. Our job was to create an inviting space that is low maintenance, drought tolerant, and kid- and dog-friendly. Using gravel, concrete pavers, and a simple planting plan consisting of Mediterranean-adaptive plants, we created this design to fit the mid-century home. The gravel allows for the absorption of rainwater while providing a space for kids and dog to romp and play. Olive trees help shade and cool the space, providing a cozy area to gather with friends. The minimalist plantings survive on very little irrigation and require little more than an hour or two of puttering in the garden per season to maintain.

The clients for this project wanted a clean lined form, an open floor plan and nothing non-essential to daily life. They also required their home be under 2,500 square feet for their family of four. Exterior materials consist of untreated cedar siding and galvanized corrugated metal. The heavy gauge “horse fence” guard rails allow an unobstructed view to the adjacent pond. This project was our first installed green roof, and after much research we decided upon a modular system. Other sustainable components include day-lighting, super-insulation, on demand water heaters, plans for a water collection cistern, radiant floor heat, gabion retaining walls filled with local rock, FSC certified flooring, reclaimed structural members, and infrastructure for an active solar collection system. The owners have since installed a remotely located photovoltaic array.

Drywall Finishing
Finishing drywall is an art. It requires significant hand-eye coordination. You need to mix the finishing compound so it’s the correct consistency. Put too much compound under the tape, and you’ll have humps in your walls. Put too little under the tape and you’ll end up with blisters when you apply the second coat.
I recommend that you call Pro-Painting & Drywall to help. You'll be stunned at the finished results when using a professional to do the job.

Is your closet busting at the seams? Or do you perhaps have no closet at all? Time to consider adding a mudroom to your house. Mudrooms are a popular interior design trend these days, and for good reason - they can house far more than a simple coat closet can. They can serve as a family command center for kids' school flyers and menus, for backpacks and shoes, for art supplies and sports equipment. Some mudrooms contain a laundry area, and some contain a mail station. Some mudrooms serve as a home base for a dog or a cat, with easy to clean, low maintenance building materials. A mudroom may consist of custom built-ins, or may simply be a corner of an existing room with pulled some clever, freestanding furniture, hooks, or shelves to house your most essential mudroom items.
Whatever your storage needs, extensive or streamlined, carving out a mudroom area can keep the whole family more organized. And, being more organized saves you stress and countless hours that would otherwise be spent searching for misplaced items.
While we love to design mudroom niches, a full mudroom interior design allows us to do what we do best here at Down2Earth Interior Design: elevate a space that is primarily driven by pragmatic requirements into a space that is also beautiful to look at and comfortable to occupy. I find myself voluntarily taking phone calls while sitting on the bench of my mudroom, simply because it's a comfortable place to be. My kids do their homework in the mudroom sometimes. My cat loves to curl up on sweatshirts temporarily left on the bench, or cuddle up in boxes on their way out to the recycling bins, just outside the door. Designing a custom mudroom for our family has elevated our lifestyle in so many ways, and I look forward to the opportunity to help make your mudroom design dreams a reality as well.

Your kitchen is more than just a cooking space; it's the heart of your home—a place for family gatherings, shared meals, and unforgettable memories. If you're here, chances are you're dreaming of a kitchen upgrade that better serves your needs while enhancing its beauty and functionality. Whether you're aiming for a sleek modern design, a functional workspace, or a charming rustic vibe, finding the right kitchen remodel services is key to turning that dream into reality.
This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about choosing the best kitchen remodel near me. From understanding your specific needs to identifying reliable services, we've got you covered.
Understanding Your Unique Kitchen Remodeling Needs
Before hiring a kitchen remodel service, it’s essential to pinpoint why you're looking to remodel in the first place. Knowing your priorities will help you make informed decisions and ensure you choose a service that aligns with your vision.
1. Functionality Upgrades
Is your kitchen outdated or inefficient? Maybe you're dealing with limited countertop space or outdated appliances that make cooking a hassle. A remodel can help optimize the layout and incorporate modern solutions, such as smart appliances or ergonomic cabinets.
2. Aesthetic Enhancements
Perhaps you’re looking to give your kitchen a fresh, stylish look that reflects your personality. Whether it’s a chic industrial design or a cozy farmhouse style, professional remodelers can help bring your aesthetic dreams to life.
3. Improved Home Value
A beautifully renovated kitchen is one of the top features potential buyers look for. According to real estate experts, a well-designed kitchen remodel can deliver up to a 70%-80% return on investment.
4. Lifestyle Changes
Has your family grown? Do you cook at home more often now? Your kitchen should adapt to these shifts, accommodating more people or making meal prep seamless.
Clearly outlining your specific goals will make it easier to choose home remodeling contractor professionals who can meet (and exceed) your expectations.
Researching for the Best Kitchen Remodel Services Near Me
Once you’ve defined your needs, the next step is to start researching. But how do you pinpoint the best kitchen remodelers in your area? Here are actionable tips:
1. Read Reviews and Testimonials
Start by checking online reviews on platforms like Google, Yelp, and Houzz. Look for consistently positive feedback, with special attention paid to customer comments about quality, communication, and timelines.
2. Check Portfolios
A picture is worth a thousand words—and reading about a remodeling company’s success isn’t enough. Browse their portfolio to ensure the quality of their work aligns with what you’re envisioning.
3. Ask for Recommendations
Word of mouth is still one of the best ways to find trustworthy services. Ask friends, family, or coworkers if they’ve worked with a remodeling service they’d recommend.
4. Look for Professional Credentials
Make sure the companies you’re vetting hold all required licenses, certifications, and insurance. It’s a sign of their professionalism and ensures accountability.
5. Conduct Interviews
Consider meeting with a few top contenders. Ask about their experience, approach to projects similar to yours, and estimated costs. Don’t shy away from asking detailed questions—it’s important to feel confident in your choice.
By thoroughly researching, you'll narrow down your options and find a remodeler who matches your vision, budget, and style.
Key Factors to Consider Before Hiring
Deciding on the right kitchen remodel near me is about more than just skills. Here are some critical factors to weigh before signing any contracts.
1. Set a Clear Budget
It’s important to have a realistic budget in mind before you begin. A reliable remodeler will respect your financial boundaries and offer solutions that maximize your investment without overspending.
2. Outline Your Timeline
Discussing deadlines ensures the project starts and finishes on time. Make sure the remodeler can meet your schedule without compromising quality.
3. Communication is Key
Clear communication is essential. You want experts who listen carefully to your needs, explain their process, and keep you updated throughout the project.
4. Warranties and Guarantees
Always ask if the service provides warranties for craftsmanship and materials. It’s a sign they stand by the quality of their work.

A planting bed and patio around the front entrance of this home required a retaining wall due to the sloping landscape around it. This also warranted multiple steps leading up to the entrance. The steps maintain a consistent paving material with the wall and patio.
