The breathtaking ocean views influenced the dramatic redesign of this water-front Poipu condo. The outdated condo was completely remodeled to allow full appreciation of the surrounding views, bring in a fresh new color palette, and modernize and update everything from the electrical wiring to the new luxury bath towels. The clients wanted the condo to feel “fun, happy, and cheerful,” and to stand apart from the typical vacation rental on Kauai. They wanted to turn this condo into the ultimate “beach house” that felt just as luxurious as the gorgeous natural surroundings. Fresh white ship-lap walls set the backdrop for this modern beach style, which is further enhanced with bold stripes, natural textures, and ocean-themed decor. The palette of cobalt, aqua and lichen green is fresh and vibrant against the neutral backdrop. Trina Turk’s “Peacock Print” was the inspiration fabric for the living and dining room. The print is so lively, colorful, and modern, and was the perfect place to start. Every custom detail was thoughtfully chosen to bring a sense of luxury and originality to the space. While some elements are whimsical, such as the playful octopus art & fish-themed fabric, other elements are sophisticated and classic, to help keep the design grounded. Special features include a custom-made “Moroccan Fish Scale” tile backsplash in the kitchen, crushed marble counter tops with oyster shells and float glass, and blue glass pendant lights, reminiscent of water bubbles.

This drop dead gorgeous kitchen encompasses custom white cabinetry with quartz and marble countertops. The curved banquette is a special touch to the sitting breakfast nook and the yellow chandelier brings it all together. It is the perfect place for a family dinner.

Living room - mid-sized traditional living room idea in Boston with white walls

CLIENT GOALS This spectacular Victorian was built in 1890 for Joseph Budde, an inventor, patent holder, and major manufacturer of the flush toilet. Through its more than 130-year life, this home evolved with the many incarnations of the Haight District. The most significant was the street modification that made way for the Haight Street railway line in the early 1920s. At that time, streets and sidewalks widened, causing the straight-line, two-story staircase to take a turn. In the 1920s, stucco and terrazzo were considered modern and low-maintenance materials and were often used to replace the handmade residential carpentry that would have graced this spectacular staircase. Sometime during the 1990s, the entire entry door assembly was removed and replaced with another “modern” solution. Our clients challenged Centoni to recreate the original staircase and entry. OUR DESIGN SOLUTION Through a partnership with local artisans and support from San Francisco Historical Planners, team Centoni sourced information from the public library that included original photographs, writings on Cranston and Keenan, and the history of the Haight. Though no specific photo has yet to be sourced, we are confident the design choices are in the spirit of the original and are based on remnants of the original porch discovered under the 1920s stucco. Through this journey, the staircase foundation was reengineered, the staircase designed and built, the original entry doors recreated, the stained glass transom created (including replication of the original hand-painted bird-theme rondels, many rotted decorated elements hand-carved, new and historic lighting installed, and a new iron handrail designed and fabricated.

When the client spoke with the Delaney Window Fashions LLC workroom designer about the creation of a unique, Hawaiian-themed child’s bedroom, the bright pink and orange paint was already in place, along with the hibiscus floral fabric border. The impetus for the additional work was the transition from a baby’s room with a crib to a little girl’s room with a full-size bed. Although the room was started, it was far from complete. With a limited amount of the client’s floral fabric, which had subsequently been discontinued, the designer created bedding and pillows and constructed a Hawaiian-themed bed canopy with lights. The homeowner wanted the bedding to be washable but not quilted and the bed crown to be light weight. A tailored, center-pleat bed skirt was created first. The remaining fabric, along with an accent fabric was used to create a comforter, envelope and bolster pillows. The comforter was created with two mitered corners; and micro-cording was purposely added around the middle section to hide the seam.The middle section was hand tacked to secure comforter layers for laundering. To finish the bedding, a tiki hut-inspired bed crown was created, which was challenging because the material had to be light weight. Including LED garland added a fun and whimsical element. With child safety in mind, shirred tulle panels were attached to the back and sides of the crown. In this way, the lights were visible, but not accessible to the child. The project was a success, and the client loves the room. The child’s lighted tiki hut bed crown provided a cozy environment for nightly bedtime stories. It made for one happy little girl! This ocean-front shingled Gambrel style house is home to a young family with little kids who lead an active, outdoor lifestyle. My goal was to create a bespoke, colorful and eclectic interior that looked sophisticated and fresh, but that was tough enough to withstand salt, sand and wet kids galore. The palette of coral and blue is an obvious choice, but we tried to translate it into a less expected, slightly updated way, hence the front door! This bedroom was designed to reduce stress and support healing for families and their children with critical illnesses. We used soothing blues, bright greens, and red accents to create a sense of home, of safety, and of hope. We referenced water, animals, and nature - universal themes. The star of the room is the Makelike "Burst" wallpaper. The furniture and fabrics are all durable and comfortable, and include: Robert Allen bench, stool, and fabrics, Lee Jofa textiles, The New Traditionalists desk via Chairish, lighting from Circa Lighting and Sonneman, custom draperies in Romo fabric, a low-profile rug from J.D. Staron, fox throw by Katy Skelton, walnut table by Dylan Design Co.; and bedding from Serena & Lily. We are honored that Melinda Mandell Interior Design was selected to participate in “Where Hope Has a Home” at the Stanford Ronald McDonald House. We believe in creating safe, nurturing, and healing spaces for all families!
