The natural limestone boulders that border the pancake boulder stairs carry over, adding organic texture to the split-level retaining wall and architectural grasses planted along it.

In this extensive landscape transformation, Campion Walker took a secluded house nestled above a running stream and turned it into a multi layered masterpiece with five distinct ecological zones.
Using an established oak grove as a starting point, the team at Campion Walker sculpted the hillsides into a magnificent wonderland of color, scent and texture. Natural stone, copper, steel, river rock and sustainable Ipe hardwood work in concert with a dynamic mix of California natives, drought tolerant grasses and Mediterranean plants to create a truly breathtaking masterpiece where every detail has been considered, crafted, and reimagined.

The installation of mixed limestone block retaining walls with brick caps seamlessly integrated with the architectural elements of the property. They are accented with the river rock blend used throughout the dry creek beds and native plantings. Accent beds are mulched with dark Whittlesey mulch to provide visual contrast and give ease to maintenance and irrigation.

Beautiful trailing lantana will spill over the side of the existing sawn chop retaining wall, once well-established. Landscape lighting highlights this planting, creating a gorgeous focal point at the edge of the putting green.

The unique details of these honeycomb limestone boulders are truly something to behold. In contrast with the architectural lines of the existing sawn chop retaining wall and softened by plantings of sage and lantana, the interplay of texture and lines creates layers of visual interest.

This beautiful custom boulder staircase leads you down to the sports court and chipping green, and carries through the design of the custom railing from the front yard into the back. The beautiful curve of the metal retaining wall contrasts the organic lines of the limestone boulders, creating visual interest and a lovely view from any angle of the sports court.

We had a several challenges to face with this project. Not only did we need to update a dated landscape to accommodate two seemingly different design tastes (modern & minimalistic vs natural english garden), we were tasked with improving the property’s drainage, improving the driveway access, reducing water usage and plant maintenance, and fixing a crumbling wall.
To marry the two design tastes, we started with the more modern elements of metal planters and softened the landscape with mass plantings of ornamental grasses and native sedge. These grasses act as a turf replacement that do not need to be mowed and require less regular watering. On each side of the yard we constructed new cedar fences to provide updated and additional privacy. In addition, we poured a new concrete wall to replace the existing retaining wall and play off the new modern vibe.

Frasier Meadows is home to a very active retirement community in Boulder, Colorado. The front yard area comes alive in late spring and early summer with a carpet of aromatic wooly thyme in full bloom.

This project won in the 2013 Builders Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh Housing Excellence Award for Best Urban Renewal Renovation Project. The glass bowl was made in the glass studio owned by the owner which is adjacent to the residence. The mirror is a repurposed window. The door is repurposed from a boarding house.
