To create this Mt Lebanon client’s “smart” dream kitchen, we removed two walls to create a large, open space perfect for their family and entertainment needs. The L- shaped island features a built-in microwave oven and wine cooler, breakfast bar and custom built bench seating with hidden storage. The side door was moved to the rear of the house for easy access to the yard and a pantry was added to the space next to the door. Smart technology was added with a Samsung refrigerator with Family Hub and lighting and audio controlled by Alexa voice controlled intelligence. All the Samsung appliances are finished in modern black stainless steel. The beautiful blue glass tile backsplash is Jeffrey Court Caribbean Gloss and the sleek countertops are Stella New Age Quartz.

This 1970s ranch style home was in need of a whole revival in the kitchen including a complete new orientation in the space. In order to solve the problem of inadequate passage at the garage door, laundry machines were relocated to another area of the home, and a new "drop zone" for mail and phones was created. A dated soffit was removed and the cooking area was relocated to a longer - focal point wall that allows the cook to be more included while entertaining. An updated rustic and simplified craftsman style was chosen to compliment the other elements of stone and beams in the rest of the home. Another great kitchen for a wonderful family. Looking west past the pantry into the hallway and master bath. The hard maple breadboard from CuttingBoards.com, the countertop made from clear fir salvaged from our old kitchen floor. The drawer pulls are 100-year-old painted bin pulls we found on Ebay. The new oak floor matches the living room and dining room, bright white 3"x6" Daltile subway tile backsplash with Mapei "iron" grout, the brass "bow" style pulls from Van Dyke Restorers and the original brass ornamental butt hinges from the kitchen's east wall of cabinets. The cabinets above the fir counter were salvaged from above the fridge on the north wall of the original kitchen and their depth reduced from 20" to 15". The shelf beneath them is an ad lib to break up the space between the countertop and the bottom of the cabinets. Barely visible in this photo is a 20 amp combination LED light/power strip that runs the full length of the counter underneath the shelf. The tall cabinets on the far end of the pantry are for storing brooms, etc. The hinges on those cabinets are replica Half Surface hinges from House of Antique Hardware similar to the original cabinet hinges. The adjustable overhead light is a hold-over from when the pantry was used as a breakfast nook, a common feature of bungalows. The "Autumn Leaves" pattern of Pilkington obscure glass for the transom was something we had seen in our hotel in Edinburgh, Scotland and was obtained from GlassGurus.com. The pocket door was salvaged from the pantry and reinstalled to provide privacy for the living areas of the home. The pulls are Eastlake sash pulls we found on Ebay. The 20" deep cabinet above the fridge is new, modeled after existing cabinets. The fridge is a Samsung 18 cubic foot counter depth model with French doors and 6 cubic foot bottom freezer that tripled the capacity of our former apartment-sized fridge. The key to the entire remodel was finding a place to put the fridge. We ended up stealing this spot by sacrificing a hall closet. With the popularity of of stainless steel appliances, it was a challenge to find a white, French door, counter-depth, bottom-freezer refrigerator. We had our eyes on the Big Chill Classic fridge, but budget overruns put it on hold. The brick exterior wall of the pantry and chimney has been revealed for texture and color interest.

A kitchen remodel for a retired Navy Captain who was ready for an upgrade to his beloved home. We wanted to keep the space light and aery but have that contrast with the black appliances. Cleanliness and easy of care were top priorities, so we used wood-looking porcelain tile and quartz for the hard surfaces. Arctic white cabinets got a chocolate glaze to amplify the detail in the door style and added a warmer feel to this large kitchen. The slab we picked was a statement piece and we made sure to use it for the backslash and waterfall it down the bar peninsula. We preserved the same footprint in this kitchen, changed out the pony wall for a bar-high peninsula, upgraded the appliances and painted the whole space Dover White. Backsplash- Natural stone subway tile. -Inspiration and Design Challenges The Original kitchen in this 1970’s raised ranch was bright an open yet left the dining room closed off from the home and wasn’t large enough for the island that Joe and his wife would have liked. Joe and Tim from THI Co. had developed a plan relocate the kitchen to one exterior wall and allow for an island that would function for both seating and entertaining. The challenge we faced was the original windows of the kitchen had to completely go. Relying solely on the open floor plan for natural light, Tim opened up the Dining room wall, removed the dividing half wall to the family room and widened doorways to the great room leading from the kitchen and dining room. The removal of the soffits and consistent wood flooring help tie together the adjacent rooms. The plan was for simple clean lines with subtle detail brought out in the trim on the cabinetry and custom 10ft island back panel. Finding a set of appliances was the next task. The kitchen was designed with the intention of being used. The Whirlpool convection wall ovens give the kitchen 3 possible functioning ovens with along with the Samsung 5 burner range. The end result is a simple elegant design that has all the functionality of galley kitchen yet the feel of an open kitchen with twice the square footage.
