Dining area, kitchen and foyer seen from the Great Room. One of the drivers in generating the floor plan was a set of seeming contradictory goals. In watching the scouting tape of the family, I was very aware that this was a family who genuinely enjoyed being with each other. One of my goals therefore was to create a central communal space that the family could share. I wanted to keep this space at an intimate scale but was over-ruled by the show staff due to 'camera angles'. In our computer generated image of this space, color was used to create a datum line that was closer to the floor and which would serve to bring down the visual scale of the room. In the scouting tape the family members spoke of "Living on top of each other", "not having privacy" and "not being able to get away". Each of the bedrooms were place in their own 'pavilion' creating a sense of thier own place. But to maintain the sense of the strong family connection, each of the bedrooms connected through alcoves directly into the communal areas of the house. Another oddity of houses built for TV is the sheer amount of lighting fixtures which are installed. Again the studio takes over when it comes to lighting. I had hoped that I could convince the show to reduce the number of fixtures, divide the lights into multiple circuits and put them all on dimmers. I am not sure where the dimmer/multi-circuit recommendation ended up, but the number of light fixtures did not get reduced.

Our client wanted to highlight their newly remodeled kitchen. When they entertain most of their friends end up in this area and they really wanted to have control over how much light came through but also wanted a simple, energy efficient look. We went with a Top Down Bottom Up Duette Architella cellular shade throughout the kitchen in a warm grey tone. In many of the areas we used the child safe, no hassle lifting system called LiteRise which is a cordless option. We stopped by our client's home to grab some pictures and they were so thrilled with the end look! ***Authorized Hunter Douglas Dealer***

Here is an example of one of my refacing projects. We used Showplace Wood Products- Renew program! We went with Showplace's Galena Door Style, in Paint Grade with Mocha Paint and an Ivory Glaze. This is another option instead of going with new cabinets that can often help save you money, saves time and it gives you the option of keeping your existing counters. We can still add any new cabinet if need be, like we did on this project. You sure cannot tell that these were my client's existing cabinets! The existing cabinets were originally plain old red oak cabinets. I've got say, it sure looks like we went with new ones. They didn't want the expense of removing and replacing their existing granite counter tops, they also wanted to do away with the desk area, add some wine storage and a new wood counter. We added a bookcase on the end of the island for cookbooks and replace their old sink with a new stainless farm sink and of course, a new tiled back splash! The backsplash tile is handcrafted by Status Tile, a 3x6 subway ceramic tile called Cristal Square Edge in color Champagne was used as the field tile and tope row is color Dune. The mosaic liner detail is Dal Tile's Illimini Sand F009 (size 5/8 x 5/8 Mosaic on 12x12 sheet) that we cut down into three row strips.

We loved updating this 1977 house giving our clients a more transitional kitchen, living room and powder bath. Our clients are very busy and didn’t want too many options. Our designers narrowed down their selections and gave them just enough options to choose from without being overwhelming. In the kitchen, we replaced the cabinetry without changing the locations of the walls, doors openings or windows. All finished were replaced with beautiful cabinets, counter tops, sink, back splash and faucet hardware. In the Master bathroom, we added all new finishes. There are two closets in the bathroom that did not change but everything else did. We.added pocket doors to the bedroom, where there were no doors before. Our clients wanted taller 36” height cabinets and a seated makeup vanity, so we were able to accommodate those requests without any problems. We added new lighting, mirrors, counter top and all new plumbing fixtures in addition to removing the soffits over the vanities and the shower, really opening up the space and giving it a new modern look. They had also been living with the cold and hot water reversed in the shower, so we also fixed that for them! In their living room, they wanted to update the dark paneling, remove the large stone from the curved fireplace wall and they wanted a new mantel. We flattened the wall, added a TV niche above fireplace and moved the cable connections, so they have exactly what they wanted. We left the wood paneling on the walls but painted them a light color to brighten up the room. There was a small wet bar between the living room and their family room. They liked the bar area but didn’t feel that they needed the sink, so we removed and capped the water lines and gave the bar an updated look by adding new counter tops and shelving. They had some previous water damage to their floors, so the wood flooring was replaced throughout the den and all connecting areas, making the transition from one room to the other completely seamless. In the end, the clients love their new space and are able to really enjoy their updated home and now plan stay there for a little longer! Description of Waterfront Home Design Challenge: The task was to fill a vast space with 14-foot walls soaring to a peak of 30 feet, using cabinetry that would not appear undervalued or insubstantial. The main question was determining the appropriate height for the cabinetry, considering the scale and proportion of the space, the walk-through to adjoining rooms, window heights, and the height of the refrigerator. Solution: By carefully analyzing these factors, we were able to create cabinetry that perfectly scaled to the grand dimensions of the room. The floor plan featured two islands that effectively filled the space. Key elements included #TheGalley workstations, drop-down televisions, #MouserCabinetry, and secret doors leading to a hidden scullery, all contributing to an extraordinary project.

Our design vision was to create a home that was one of a kind, and fit each and every need of the client. We created an open floor plan on the first floor with 10 ft ceilings and expansive views out to the main floor balcony. The first floor also features a primary suite, also referred to as “the apartment” where our homeowners have a primary bath, walk-in closet, coffee bar and laundry room. The primary bedroom includes a vaulted ceiling with direct access to the outside deck and an accent trim wall. The primary bath features a large open shower with multiple showering options and separate water closet. The second floor has unique elements for each of their children. As you walk up the stairs, there is a bonus room and study area for them. The second floor features a unique split level design, giving the bonus room a 10 ft ceiling. As you continue down the hallway there are individual bedrooms, second floor laundry, and a bathroom that won’t slow anyone down while getting ready in the morning.

Welcome to the coziest corner of a log cabin on Lake Anna. This project was so fun and darling. First came the layout: We installed a wall of glass blocks between the front door and the living room. Before our redesign, you had 3 choices to make right when you walked in the front door: walk down a short hallway to the kitchen, walk upstairs, or walk into the living room. By walling off the living room option, we funneled the entry energy down the short hallway to the kitchen, and we made the living room a cozy destination and not just another passage way through the house to the kitchen! Why did we use glass blocks? Because this log cabin has an eclectic mid-century modern twist and glass blocks are cool and interesting. It also gives a teaser of the living room when you enter the house. Everything else we accomplished in this project includes: new flooring, paint, new light fixtures, new window treatments, and all newly selected vintage furniture, new furniture and pillows, rugs, art, and decor!

In the previous layout, the basement stairs were located approximately where the new kitchen island sits. The stairs were relocated, and walls were removed in order to open this space up.

This house was designed for a couple and their son. One of the design program requirements was to have two master suites on the main level. They enjoy cooking and entertaining so the public and food prep. areas are functional, attractive and conducive to people gathering around. Consequently, the square footage of the main level is large. The house is also on a very steep slope which didn't help with the required footprint. In order to minimize the related costs of building with this site condition, the footprint of the house is long and not deep as it reaches down the slope. The scale of the existing homes in the neighborhood are unimposing. In order to play down the size as viewed from the street, the facade is broken up into several different masses with low sloping roofs. Once you're inside, the house opens up with 14 foot ceilings in the entry and living areas. The ceiling height of other spaces on the main level are 10 feet. Universal design was implemented on the main level to provide inherent accessibility for everyone. The lower level accommodates several guest rooms and baths, an exercise room, a guest den with wet bar and a man cave. Another design program requirement was to make the house as maintenance-free as possible. Exterior materials include stucco, Pennsylvania Blue Stone and a new aluminum siding product called Longboard. The siding comes in many wood grain finishes and to everyone that has seen it, they think it's real wood. It's also made from heavy gauge aluminum so it doesn't ding like traditional aluminum siding. The roofs are metal standing seam. The house is energy efficient. It's fully insulated with spray foam insulation-lots of it. The exterior walls were designed with 2x6 studs and roof rafters are 2x12 to provide plenty of space for the insulation, exceeding the required R-values. Windows and doors of course are energy efficient as well. All lighting is LED. The decking around the exterior is locust, a very hard native wood which is naturally insect and rot resistant. The best part of the whole project are the owners who love their new home. They initially had plans to live in this house during the summer months and Florida during the winter. They are now seriously considering living here full-time.

These clients are your typical, plant-loving millennials who, slowly and on a budget, are bringing a unique vision for their home to life. Color, while important to every homeowner, was clearly important to these homeowners. With one homeowner being an artist with an affinity for pink, the couple went through a gamut of cabinet color options including olive, teal, navy, and mustard. Assisted by interior designer Erinn Farrell, they landed on a custom paint color – Benjamin Moore’s Evening Blue – for the cabinetry, complemented by clear Alder in a natural stain. The retro, Mid-Mod Squares tile backsplash in custom colors from Mercury Mosaics gives a nod to the original style of the home built in the 1950's. The overall layout of the kitchen didn't change much, but the pantry and baking center on the refrigerator wall are new features that provide much needed storage. The main living area, however, did go through some major changes. The wall separating the kitchen and dining room came down, and the small doorway connecting the dining and living rooms was transformed into a larger arch. The original wood floors (found beneath not one, but two layers of linoleum) received a fresh stain. The homeowners also knocked down the wall that sectioned off the stairs and built a slatted wood partition themselves. It was originally going to be a reeded wall, but they added the boxes for extra support, giving it more character in the end. At Revival House we love a unique, bold project. However, the fact that these clients love the new kitchen and can’t believe they get to use it every day is the best compliment!

We helped design each room specifically for the functional and aesthetic needs. We did Woven wood shades in the family and kitchen area without a lining since privacy was not a concern. For the master bedroom, we did shutters with a split tilt feature for added privacy and light control. For the bathroom we did a fun patterned roman shade option with the larger window with the top down feature to give added light and maintaining privacy. We also did custom fabric valances in the guest room.
