Example of an urban gender-neutral playroom design in San Diego with green walls

Reverse Shed Eichler
This project is part tear-down, part remodel. The original L-shaped plan allowed the living/ dining/ kitchen wing to be completely re-built while retaining the shell of the bedroom wing virtually intact. The rebuilt entertainment wing was enlarged 50% and covered with a low-slope reverse-shed roof sloping from eleven to thirteen feet. The shed roof floats on a continuous glass clerestory with eight foot transom. Cantilevered steel frames support wood roof beams with eaves of up to ten feet. An interior glass clerestory separates the kitchen and livingroom for sound control. A wall-to-wall skylight illuminates the north wall of the kitchen/family room. New additions at the back of the house add several “sliding” wall planes, where interior walls continue past full-height windows to the exterior, complimenting the typical Eichler indoor-outdoor ceiling and floor planes. The existing bedroom wing has been re-configured on the interior, changing three small bedrooms into two larger ones, and adding a guest suite in part of the original garage. A previous den addition provided the perfect spot for a large master ensuite bath and walk-in closet. Natural materials predominate, with fir ceilings, limestone veneer fireplace walls, anigre veneer cabinets, fir sliding windows and interior doors, bamboo floors, and concrete patios and walks. This Year Round Betterliving Sunroom addition in Rochester, MA is a big hit with friends and neighbors alike! After seeing neighbors add a sunroom to their home – this family had to get one (and more of the neighbors followed in their footsteps, too)! Our design expert and skilled craftsmen turned an open space into a comfortable porch to keep the bugs and elements out! This style of sunroom is called a fill-in sunroom because it was built into the existing porch. Fill-in sunrooms are simple to install and take less time to build as we can typically use the existing porch to build on. All windows and doors are custom manufactured at Betterliving’s facility to fit under the existing porch roof.

Weatherwell Elite aluminum shutters were retro fitted to this outdoor room to allow the owners to use this space again after southerly winds and lack of privacy had prevented them from using the the area. They love: being able to operate the louvers to be at varying degrees of openness, having no maintenance, being able to hose to clean, and the life-like look and feel of the textured wood look powder coat.

We took a predictable suburban spec house and transformed it into a unique home of enduring value and family-centered design. The existing footprint was expanded where it needed it most: in the family and kitchen area, creating a large square room with open views to a protected nature preserve abutting the property. An unexpected glass canopy and teak entry door are clues that what lies beyond is hardly commonplace.
The design challenge was to infuse modern-day functionality and architectural quality into a spec house. Working in partnership with Gary Cruz Studio, we designed the pared down, art-filled interiors with the goal of creating comfortable, purposeful living environments. We also sought to integrate the existing pool and rear deck into the overall building design, extending the usable space outside as a screened-in porch, a dining terrace, and a seating area around a stone fire pit.

Large cottage porcelain tile and brown floor wine cellar photo in New York with storage racks

Restrained architectural details create a subtle elegance in the Living Room, where transom-topped French doors project outwards to frame views of the Sound beyond. Gracefully keyed archtop cabinets and painted wood paneling flank the intricately detailed fireplace surround.

Hugh Lofting Timber Framing (HLTF) manufactured and installed the Southern Yellow Pine glued-laminated (glulams) beams and the Douglas Fir lock deck T&G in this modern house in Centreville, MD. HLTF worked closely with Torchio Architects to develop the steel connection designs and the overall glulam strategy for the project.

Absolutely stunning in detail, this home features a rustic interior with vaulted great room using reclaimed timber beams that provide immediate depth and character. The centerpiece of the retreat is an inviting fireplace with a custom designed locking screen that compliments the warm stone used throughout the interior and exterior. The showstopper is the dual Lowen bi-folding doors that bring the outside-in, while the phantom screens provide a barrier from the elements when needed. Our private estate has an expansive entertaining spaces with a one-of-a- kind built-in grill that connects to the main home while below, on the lower level, a beautiful pool and gazebo.
