The architectural star is the custom oversized dome ceiling with hidden warm white cove lighting that creates a soft, floating halo effect. To balance the dark walls, we layered in a light, textural cut-pile carpet for acoustic softening and visual contrast. Seating is a custom oversized low-profile modular pit sectional in a dark taupe performance velvet, designed for lounging and large family movie nights. A single modern linear wall sconce and dimmable recessed downlights provide layered, theater-appropriate lighting without competing with the screen. This outdoor living room offers the homeowners a quiet and secluded place to rest and unwind. A neighbouring Black Walnut Tree reduced the overall functional usability of this backyard, and the idea for an outdoor living room was developed. The pocket doors can be screens or can be switched to glass windows when the weather turns colder, offering extended use of the outdoor room during the shoulder seasons.

The traditional brick facade of this 1890’s South End row house screens a dramatic and daring renovation of the interior. The design intent for the elevated primary bedroom was to complement the home’s original Japanese architectural details—shoji screens, exposed beams, and warm layered wood. A low-profile bed, vintage nightstands, and textiles were chosen to echo the space’s quiet elegance and wabi-sabi sensibility, creating a restful and grounded retreat.

The one-of-a-kind design helped solve the problem for extra storage, incorporating a fireplace and flat screen tv without adding extra furniture and preserving the contemporary warmth.
