This great room was designed so everyone can be together for both day-to-day living and when entertaining. This custom home was designed and built by Meadowlark Design+Build in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Photography by Joshua Caldwell.

New open dining and kitchen with stairs from the downstairs entry and cool pantry hallway to powder room beyond. To reduce costs the kitchen was designed to fit the owner's existing appliances that they had just purchased. We always provide lots of operable windows for good cross ventilation on rare hot days in San Francisco. A new hallway becomes a pantry leading to a new powder room behind the refrigerator.

Truth: we like camping more than living our “real lives,” so we decided to take a stab at achieving a campsite feel in the bedroom. Full moon, bonfire, sticks, camp blankets, triangular mirrors that subtly suggest mountain peaks… you get the idea. This kitchen design in Newtown, PA offsets the more traditional white kitchen cabinets with grey and stainless steel accents throughout, to create an elegant transitional design. The kitchen is designed with zones to suit the different needs of a busy household. The island includes a round table top, perfect for dining and entertaining, and the pendant lights over the island are completed with an Edison bulb. This client wanted something clean and contemporary without being cold or too modern. We used porcelain wood for the flooring to add warmth but keep it low maintenance. The shower floor is in a beautiful silver slate.
