The owners of a charming home in the hills west of Paso Robles recently decided to remodel their not-so-charming kitchen. Referred to San Luis Kitchen by several of their friends, the homeowners visited our showroom and soon decided we were the best people to design a kitchen fitting the style of their home. We were delighted to get to work on the project right away.
When we arrived at the house, we found a small, cramped and out-dated kitchen. The ceiling was low, the cabinets old fashioned and painted a stark dead white, and the best view in the house was neglected in a seldom-used breakfast nook (sequestered behind the kitchen peninsula). This kitchen was also handicapped by white tile counters with dark grout, odd-sized and cluttered cabinets, and small ‘desk’ tacked on to the side of the oven cabinet. Due to a marked lack of counter space & inadequate storage the homeowner had resorted to keeping her small appliances on a little cart parked in the corner and the garbage was just sitting by the wall in full view of everything! On the plus side, the kitchen opened into a nice dining room and had beautiful saltillo tile floors.
Mrs. Homeowner loves to entertain and often hosts dinner parties for her friends. She enjoys visiting with her guests in the kitchen while putting the finishing touches on the evening’s meal. Sadly, her small kitchen really limited her interactions with her guests – she often felt left out of the mix at her own parties! This savvy homeowner dreamed big – a new kitchen that would accommodate multiple workstations, have space for guests to gather but not be in the way, and maybe a prettier transition from the kitchen to the dining (wine service area or hutch?) – while managing the remodel budget by reusing some of her major appliances and keeping (patching as needed) her existing floors.
Responding to the homeowner’s stated wish list and the opportunities presented by the home's setting and existing architecture, the designers at San Luis Kitchen decided to expand the kitchen into the breakfast nook. This change allowed the work area to be reoriented to take advantage of the great view – we replaced the existing window and added another while moving the door to gain space. A second sink and set of refrigerator drawers (housing fresh fruits & veggies) were included for the convenience of this mainly vegetarian cook – her prep station. The clean-up area now boasts a farmhouse style single bowl sink – adding to the ‘cottage’ charm. We located a new gas cook-top between the two workstations for easy access from each. Also tucked in here is a pullout trash/recycle cabinet for convenience and additional drawers for storage.
Running parallel to the work counter we added a long butcher-block island with easy-to-access open shelves for the avid cook and seating for friendly guests placed just right to take in the view. A counter-top garage is used to hide excess small appliances. Glass door cabinets and open shelves are now available to display the owners beautiful dishware. The microwave was placed inconspicuously on the end of the island facing the refrigerator – easy access for guests (and extraneous family members) to help themselves to drinks and snacks while staying out of the cook’s way.
We also moved the pantry storage away from the dining room (putting it on the far wall and closer to the work triangle) and added a furniture-like hutch in its place allowing the more formal dining area to flow seamlessly into the up-beat work area of the kitchen. This space is now also home (opposite wall) to an under counter wine refrigerator, a liquor cabinet and pretty glass door wall cabinet for stemware storage – meeting Mr. Homeowner’s desire for a bar service area.
And then the aesthetic: an old-world style country cottage theme. The homeowners wanted the kitchen to have a warm feel while still loving the look of white cabinetry. San Luis Kitchen melded country-casual knotty pine base cabinets with vintage hand-brushed creamy white wall cabinets to create the desired cottage look. We also added bead board and mullioned glass doors for charm, used an inset doorstyle on the cabinets for authenticity, and mixed stone and wood counters to create an eclectic nuance in the space. All in all, the happy homeowners now boast a charming county cottage kitchen with plenty of space for entertaining their guests while creating gourmet meals to feed them.

This intimate wine cellar features Custom Reclaimed Wood Wine Racks lining the stone walls, framed overhead by a Hand Hewn Timber beam and matching window casing. The rich, textured wood racks bring warmth and craftsmanship to the space, holding an impressive collection against a backdrop of natural stone and a hand laid brick vaulted ceiling, all coming together for an intimate tasting experience within this Minnesota barnhouse.
Custom Reclaimed Wood Wine Racks are built from antique timbers, each rack milled to hold rows of bottles while showcasing the natural grain, saw marks, and character of genuine reclaimed wood. Hand Hewn Timbers, salvaged from our neighboring Wisconsin and shaped by hand with axes and adzes, bring that same one of a kind texture to the beam overhead and the window framing, grounding the cellar in authentic 19th century craftsmanship.
Whether you are a homebuilder, a home remodeling contractor, or a homeowner drawn to authentic custom reclaimed wine racks and hand hewn timbers, Manomin Resawn Timbers can help bring that character into your own wine cellar. Overlooking the lake, this dining room pairs Hand Hewn Timbers, used as ceiling beams and full height window and wall framing, with Antique Skip Oak Flooring underfoot, striking the balance between rustic and elegant that defines this Minnesota barnhouse. Crystal chandeliers and a long dining table set beneath the reclaimed timber ceiling create a gracious welcome for a couple who loves family and entertaining, the raw texture of the wood offering a warm, grounded counterpoint to the refined lighting and furnishings.
Hand Hewn Timbers, salvaged from our neighboring Wisconsin and shaped by hand with axes and adzes, bring true one of a kind character to this space, every beam and post marked by the inexact hand tools that built the original farms and barns of the American Midwest. Antique Skip Oak Flooring is milled from a mix of red and white reclaimed oak salvaged from century old structures, skip planed to leave a distressed surface that bears the marks of the original milling saws more than a century ago.
Whether you are a homebuilder, a home remodeling contractor, or a homeowner drawn to authentic Hand Hewn Timbers and reclaimed oak flooring, Manomin Resawn Timbers can help bring that character into your own home. Visit our showroom in Hugo, MN or reach out to us with a call or a message.

This home gym pairs Hand Hewn Timbers overhead as exposed ceiling beams with a Weathered Antique Reclaimed Wood Barn Door sliding along the far wall, set against a backdrop of natural granite stone. The reclaimed wood brings warmth and texture into an otherwise modern, equipment filled space, keeping the rustic character of this Minnesota barnhouse present even in its most functional rooms.
Hand Hewn Timbers, salvaged from our neighboring Wisconsin and shaped by hand with axes and adzes, bring one of a kind texture to the ceiling beams, each piece marked by the inexact hand tools once used to build farms and barns across the American Midwest. The Weathered Antique Barn Door carries a mix of softwoods, hemlock to pine, sourced from joists, roof boards, decking, and walls of late 19th and early 20th century structures, its moody, weathered patina a striking contrast against the stone wall.
Whether you are a homebuilder, a home remodeling contractor, or a homeowner drawn to authentic hand hewn timbers and reclaimed wood barn doors, Manomin Resawn Timbers can help bring that character into your own home. Visit our showroom in Hugo, MN or reach out to us with a call or a message.

At first glance this rustic kitchen looks so authentic, one would think it was constructed 100 years ago. Situated in the Rocky Mountains, this second home is the gathering place for family ski vacations and is the definition of luxury among the beautiful yet rough terrain. A hand-forged hood boldly stands in the middle of the room, commanding attention even through the sturdy log beams both above and to the sides of the work/gathering space. The view just might get jealous of this kitchen!

Photos are of one of our customers' finished project. We did over 90 beams for use throughout their home :)
When choosing beams for your project, there are many things to think about. One important consideration is the weight of the beam, especially if you want to affix it to your ceiling. Choosing a solid beam may not be the best choice since some of them can weigh upwards of 1000 lbs. Our craftsmen have several solutions for this common problem.
One such solution is to fabricate a ceiling beam using veneer that is "sliced" from the outside of an existing beam. Our craftsmen then carefully miter the edges and create a lighter weight, 3 sided solution.
Another common method is "hogging out" the beam. We hollow out the beam leaving the original outer character of three sides intact. (Hogging out is a good method to use when one side of the beam is less than attractive.)
Our 3-sided and Hogged out beams are available in Reclaimed or Old Growth woods.

This traditional white bathroom beautifully incorporates white subway tile and marble accents. The black and white marble floor compliments the black tiles used to frame the decorative marble shower accent tiles and mirror. Completed with chrome fixtures, this black and white bathroom is undoubtedly elegant.

This kitchen addition project is an expansion of an old story and a half South Bozeman home.
See the video about the finished project here: https://youtu.be/ClH5A3qs6Ik
This old house has been remodeled and added onto many times over. A complete demolition and rebuild of this structure would be the best course of action, but we are in a historic neighborhood and we will be working with it as is. Budget is an issue as well, so in addition to the second story addition, we are limiting our renovation efforts to the kitchen and bathroom areas at the back the house. We are making a concerted effort to not get into too much of the existing front half of this house.
This is precisely the type of remodeling work that requires a very skilled and experienced builder. And I emphasize experienced. We are lucky to be working with Luke Stahlberg of Ibex Builders. Luke is a talented local Bozeman contractor with years of experience in the remodeling industry. Luke is very methodical and well organized. This is a classic remodeling project with enough detail to really test a contractor’s skill and experience.
