This beautiful one-story brick rancher located in Henrico County is impressive. Painting brick can be a hard decision to make but it’s a tried and true way of updating your home’s exterior without replacing the masonry. While some brick styles have stood the test of time, others have become dated more quickly. Moreover, many homeowners prefer a solid color for their home as compared to the natural variety of brick. This home was painted with Benjamin Moore’s Mayonnaise, a versatile bright white with a touch of creamy yellow.

The prior owner lived there from 1940s until she died at age of 98! The old home had loads of character and charm but was in pretty bad condition and desperately needed updates. The clients purchased the home a few years ago and did some work before they moved in (roof, HVAC, electrical) but decided to live in the house for a 6 months or so before embarking on the next renovation phase. I had worked with the clients previously on the wife's office space and a few projects in a previous home including the nursery design for their first child so they reached out when they were ready to start thinking about the interior renovations. The goal was to respect and enhance the historic architecture of the home but make the spaces more functional for this couple with two small kids. Clients were open to color and some more bold/unexpected design choices. The design style is updated traditional with some eclectic elements. An early design decision was to incorporate a dark colored french range which would be the focal point of the kitchen and to do dark high gloss lacquered cabinets in the adjacent coffee bar, and we ultimately went with dark green.

A grey-blue painted open floor plan home that incorporates a feminine touch is what makes this space transitional. The kitchen and family room remodel transformed the home into a new, fresh space with a great backbone for clean lined furnishings and modern accessories. The young homeowner can utilize the many seating areas for entertaining and parties. The clean, white kitchen is an open space with sharp lined shaker style cabinetry and a unique small sitting area for dining.

An abstract arrangement of rich yet soft colours taken from the Spectrum design. Each and every colour is different making the production of this design very challenging for the weavers as each shade of wool or silk must be dyed individually by hand. The larger rectangles are hand knotted in Tibetan wool, with the smaller ones in hand spun silk.

This white kitchen island features a sleek built-in Sharp microwave drawer, perfectly positioned for easy access and clean lines. The surrounding raised-panel cabinetry and decorative lower drawer add a traditional touch, while the integrated outlet makes this a practical hub for quick cooking, reheating, or prepping snacks. Most failed paver patios in the Charlotte area don't fail because of the pavers. They fail because of what was skipped underneath. When you see a finished patio, you're looking at the final 2 inches of a 10-inch build. Here's the work that decides how long it lasts: Excavation. 8 to 12 inches below the final surface, down to stable soil. A patio built on topsoil sinks. A patio built on compacted ground doesn't. Base layer. 4 to 6 inches of crushed stone, compacted in lifts. This is the structural backbone — the deeper and denser it is, the straighter the surface stays. Bedding sand. A 1-inch precisely screeded layer of sharp sand. Not decorative — it locks the pavers in place and allows micro-adjustments without disturbing the base. Edge restraint + polymeric sand. The perimeter restraint keeps pavers from spreading sideways. Polymeric sand swept into the joints seals against weeds, insects, and water migration. What you pay for is the 2 inches on top. What makes it last is the 10 inches underneath. That's the difference between a patio that holds up for two decades and one that sinks near the downspout in year three.

Another design need for her IKEA kitchen was an easier-to-clean countertop, Shoko says. “Our original counter was brown, making it very difficult to spot messes, spills, and crumbs. That’s why we opted for a white counter with matching backsplash (which is all one piece),” she says. In fact, the Caesarstone in Blizzard runs from the sink to the stove area, giving ample space for food prep and is complemented by the matching backsplash and the custom butcher block seating area on the other side of the stove. “Clean up is so much quicker and easier with the new countertops,” she says. The counter area is further brightened by under cabinet lighting strips from IKEA. For new IKEA renovators, Shoko wants to share some useful tips from her IKEA experience. “The first thing I would say to others is do not be intimidated by the renovation process! There are so many resources available that can help simplify an IKEA renovation project. I’d also suggest asking a lot of questions, including asking how you plan on using the space,” she says. She also says that working with design professionals was the best decision for her IKEA kitchen. “The kitchen specialists at IKEA were very knowledgeable, and, of course the staff at IKD explained all the options, materials, and demystified the IKEA ordering process,” she adds. She concludes: “Ultimately, we chose IKEA cabinetry for the ease and the price. Since our apartment isn’t a forever home, we didn’t think it made sense to go for custom cabinets. We were looking for something simple, clean, and affordable, and for a project (and a space) of this size, IKEA’s options were a great fit for us!”

Together they selected IKEA SEKTION cabinetry framework with Super Matte White Slab upper cabinet fronts and Super Matte Clay Slab lower cabinet fronts, drawer fronts and toe kicks from Semihandmade. These were enhanced with Schoolhouse Mid Century Knobs in Natural Brass cabinet pulls; floating shelves in Oak from Semihandmade and Mackinaw in Brass drawer pulls by SSS x Park, also from Semihandmade. To complement the look, Shoko selected a variety of high-end appliances, including a Miseno sink; a Grohe Concetto faucet in Super Steel; a dishwasher, hood and refrigerator from Whirlpool; a Beko stove; a custom butcher block seating area by Sam Newman, and Caesarstone in Blizzard countertops from D2 Design & Works. The backsplash also features the Caesarstone in Blizzard material and it is all enhanced by under cabinet lighting strips from IKEA as well as Muuto Grain Pendant lights in White. And, she notes, this was all accomplished within her budget of $30,000. Once Shoko made the decision to go with IKEA cabinets, she needed help figuring out exactly what was needed for the small kitchen. She explains: “We had researched kitchen design Web sites such as Clever, Remodelista and Pinterest for inspiration, but the main obstacle was getting started and figuring out how to plan a renovation while adhering to our budget and timeline.” While relying on IKD’s design services, Shoko also hired a general contractor, Marek Pavlovski of Vann Jordan, Inc. to demo the old kitchen and install the new one. This included all kitchen cabinets, appliances and painting, among others. “We found him using Sweeten,” she says. “He and his team were incredible and helped make the renovation process smooth and swift.” She concludes: “Working with IKD, Sweeten, Vann Jordan, and IKEA made this as stress-free a process as any home renovation can be.”

Stunning master bathroom remodel in Encinitas. Project was completely customized to homeowner's specifications. His and Hers floating beech vanities with quartz counters, include a drop down make up vanity on Her side. Custom recessed solid maple medicine cabinets behind the mirror. Both vanities feature large rimmed vessel sinks and polished chrome faucets. The spacious 2 person shower showcases a custom pebble mosaic puddle at the entrance, 3D wave tile walls and hand painted Moroccan fish scale tile accenting the bench and oversized shampoo niches. Each end of the shower is outfitted with it's own set of shower head and valve, as well as a hand shower with slide bar.

The living room was long and narrow but with an amazing bay window. Instead of a galley style living room used by the previous owner, we decided to change the furniture arrangement by putting one big comfy L-shaped sectional all the way to one side to create a pass-through area enabling a better foot traffic. We then added two side chairs for extra seats. We also mounted our TV on top of the fireplace to gain more space. Although it's not my favorite design choice to have TV on top of the fireplace because I think it takes away from the fireplace but we had to work within the limitation of the space. For the fireplace, we bought wood stove insert and inserted it into the existing masonry fireplace. The look was updated by granite tiles around the insert and custom built wood mantel. Buying wood fireplace insert was the best decision we made. First of all, it created a memorable space in our home. I LOVE the sound of wood cracking and the smell of wood burning. In winter nights we would sit around the fireplace and make s'mores like it's a campfire. Second, it's a clean burning and efficient heater. You don't lose the majority the fire’s heat up the chimney thereby saving money on your heating bill. The coffee table is purchased from Wicker Emporium and it's made from reclaimed pine timbers giving the house a rustic feel. The side chair by the fireplace is the perfect spot for me to relax, put my feet up on the large ball shaped knitted foot rest and enjoy a cup of cappuccino or cozy up with a good book.

With an out dated kitchen this beautiful California styled home required a gut and redo in the main kitchen area. The decision making process was extensive, but the client felt like she achieved a beautiful new kitchen with the guidance and hard work of Arlene Ladegaard and the Design Connection, Inc. team. From the beautiful white inset cabinet doors to the seamless look of the built in refrigerator to the antique brass faucets and pulls this kitchen is complete. With a unique architectural element featuring two structural beams running crosswise through the kitchen, the cabinetry needed to work to enhance the detail. On the wish list was an impressive island with seating that could replace the large kitchen table. The kitchen was designed with 33” high custom wall cabinets of varying heights, to float unobtrusively below the beams. A window was removed in order to accommodate the new beautiful focal point; a custom designed stucco hood and cooking area with a decorative ledge niche. Skylights in the vaulted area produce ample light, allowing the sink to be relocated to the large center island. The cherry glazed island conceals two dishwashers, with a soft outer arc so that diners can see one another. An elegant dinette area was created to showcase glassware and store linens. With a matching wood top and a hidden TV, this beautiful furniture piece is in direct view from the living room area, making the kitchen, at a glance, as well appointed as the rest of the home. Softly distressed ivory cabinetry with a brown glaze lightened the originally dark kitchen, creating a roomy and cheerful space. Golden tumbled travertine and crackled glass details on the backsplash accentuate the dramatic “Grand Canyon” colors of the natural stone counter tops.

2013 NARI CAPITAL COTY, FINALIST AWARD WINNER, RESIDENTIAL BATH UNDER $30,000 A colonial home recently built in the suburb of Leesburg had a run of the mill 10’x11’ bathroom connected to the seating room of the master suite. The clients disliked both the builder grade soaking tub and small shower, in fact, preferring to sacrifice the tub for a much bigger spa-like shower stall. In general, they wanted more space and more storage. To increase the footprint for the remodel, a decision was made to “steal” some space from the seating room. The new layout features a large, walk-in shower with a frameless glass enclosure. A rain shower, body sprays and bench seating meet all of the homeowners’ desires. Large linen cabinets surround a large new vanity, touting a granite top, vessel sinks and wall-mounted faucets. Mirrored, embedded medicine cabinets are wrapped in glass tile and illuminated by hanging lights. The opposite wall features floating dressing cabinets which serve as a new make-up area. Smart use of lighting, such as pendants, sconces, and recess lights has made the space brighter than ever. Designers at Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes used large, light color porcelain tiles and enhanced the look with complementary glass tiles on accents walls, niches and other areas.
