The landscape design for this private residence brings together a diverse array of elements to create an ethereal, multi-sensory experience where sound, movement, colour and scent are simultaneously evoked. Shielded by a forty foot hedge, the site challenged us to create an exterior, yet interior, world where Asian and Western influences intersect. In honouring the traditions of Feng Shui, the retaining wall does not sit directly on the entrance. Meditation pathways lead to areas of retreat and socialization (including an outdoor fire, a restored pool and covered seating area). An ergonomic garden and potting station lined with fruit trees allows the client to grow her own plants and vegetables. A multi-leveled water feature is framed with lush camellias and peonies; the landscape is lined with evergreens and decorated with Chinese basalt and local granite. The multi-sensory design comes to life in the grove of Shirofugen cherry trees as it sheds its petals to the music of a custom Corten steel wind chime sculpture made by English artist David Harber. A weather station was placed on site for a month to determine the weight of the chimes—each one set to the pentatonic scale. This is a space where our clients can grow and evolve their lives with the seasons.

A wonderful pair of antique Spanish Revival cast iron sconces, signed by Champion Lighting Company, c.1920. These double-arm sconces retain their original brilliant polychrome finish in orange, green and copper. Each backplate features an intricately detailed and pierced backplate featuring lions, a crest and a crown; a mica panel sits behind the backplate and shows through its pierced design. Two sconce arms flank the backplate and support wax pans ornamented with shields; decorative loops finials suspend below each wax pan. These wall lamps are in excellent condition; they have been professionally rewired and come with all the necessary attachments for modern installation. We kept the original nonfunctioning turn switches for nostalgia’s sake; however, we will gladly replace them with new ones if desired. The sconces measure 11-3/8” tall, 10-1/2” wide, and project 4-1/2” from the wall. NSP929

Inspiration for a mid-sized modern front porch remodel in Miami

The utility room was in between the LR and the kitchen, so we moved it in order to connect the two spaces. We put the utility room where the laundry room used to be and created a new laundry room off a new hallway that leads to the master bedroom. The space for this was created by borrowing space from the XL dining area. We carved out space for the formal living room to accommodate a larger kitchen. The rest of the space became modest-sized offices with French doors to allow light from the house's front into the kitchen. The living room now transitioned into the kitchen with a new bar and sitting area. We also transformed the full bath and hallway, which became a half-bath and mudroom for this single couple. The master bathroom was redesigned to receive a private toilet room and tiled shower. The stairs were reoriented to highlight an open railing and small foyer with a pretty armchair. The client’s existing stylish furnishings were incorporated into the colorful, bold design. Each space had personality and unique charm. The aqua kitchen’s focal point is the Kohler cast-iron vintage-inspired sink. The enlarged windows in the living room and sink allow the homeowners to enjoy the natural surroundings. In this condo, the kitchen is open to the main living area. Lacquered cabinets are custom painted in Benjamin Moore Revere pewter to match the walls. The living area looks terrific from the kitchen, but we wanted to shield unsightly cooking messes from the living area. To that end, we designed an extra-high raised counter, useful for serving meals and for display. The whole space is quietly neutral, while trendy orange accents add warmth and interest.
