This beautiful, three-story, updated shingle-style cottage is perched atop a bluff on the shores of Lake Michigan, and was designed to make the most of its towering vistas. The proportions of the home are made even more pleasing by the combination of stone, shingles and metal roofing. Deep balconies and wrap-around porches emphasize outdoor living, white tapered columns, an arched dormer, and stone porticos give the cottage nautical quaintness, tastefully balancing the grandeur of the design.
The interior space is dominated by vast panoramas of the water below. High ceilings are found throughout, giving the home an airy ambiance, while enabling large windows to display the natural beauty of the lakeshore. The open floor plan allows living areas to act as one sizeable space, convenient for entertaining. The diagonally situated kitchen is adjacent to a sunroom, dining area and sitting room. Dining and lounging areas can be found on the spacious deck, along with an outdoor fireplace. The main floor master suite includes a sitting area, vaulted ceiling, a private bath, balcony access, and a walk-through closet with a back entrance to the home’s laundry. A private study area at the front of the house is lined with built-in bookshelves and entertainment cabinets, creating a small haven for homeowners.
The upper level boasts four guest or children’s bedrooms, two with their own private bathrooms. Also upstairs is a built-in office space, loft sitting area, ample storage space, and access to a third floor deck. The walkout lower level was designed for entertainment. Billiards, a bar, sitting areas, screened-in and covered porches make large groups easy to handle. Also downstairs is an exercise room, a large full bath, and access to an outdoor shower for beach-goers.

Inspired by the Campground cottages of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, this new garage with living space above is an accessory building to the KHS-designed Touisset Small House Renovation/Addition. It replaces a previous one-story garage and sits on its 16-foot by 22-foot foundation.
In the upper-level sitting room, custom Gothic-revival style doors open to a cantilevered intimate balcony overlooking the backyard. A bracketed roof overhang above the balcony invites sheltered outdoor living. Inside, a beamed cathedral ceiling echoes the ceiling treatment in the Touisset Small House kitchen addition. Beadboard and a simple paint palette further tie the accessory building’s aesthetic to the main cottage.

Tucked beneath a deep roof overhang, this covered patio provides a quiet, private zone ideal for morning coffee or relaxed evening conversation. Dual rocking chairs, complete with plush accent pillows, sit against a warm-toned stacked stone feature wall, blending natural texture with the crisp architectural lines of the surrounding white columns and siding.
The floor is finished in multi-tone rectangular pavers, arranged in an offset pattern that adds subtle movement to the otherwise minimalist space. Recessed lighting in the ceiling ensures soft illumination after sunset, while the open sides invite cross-breezes and framed views of the adjacent landscape. Small-scale accessories, such as a sculptural rope orb and a compact side table, emphasize the cozy character of this patio design — making it a refined yet laid-back extension of the home’s exterior.

Corners are eroded on all of the structures to allow the interior space to marry with the exterior views and site. Decks wrap these corners as well and provide an intermediate transition zone between structure and landscape.
Inspired by local fishing shacks and wharf buildings dotting the coast of Maine, this retreat interweaves large glazed openings with simple taut-skinned New England shingled cottages. This skin is incised to open views to the sea beyond and relies on light steel framing and thin braces to preserve the simple forms eroded toward sweeping views.Eric Reinholdt - Project Architect/Lead Designer with Elliott + Elliott Architecture

Shingle details and handsome stone accents give this traditional carriage house the look of days gone by while maintaining all of the convenience of today. The goal for this home was to maximize the views of the lake and this three-story home does just that. With multi-level porches and an abundance of windows facing the water. The exterior reflects character, timelessness, and architectural details to create a traditional waterfront home.
The exterior details include curved gable rooflines, crown molding, limestone accents, cedar shingles, arched limestone head garage doors, corbels, and an arched covered porch. Objectives of this home were open living and abundant natural light. This waterfront home provides space to accommodate entertaining, while still living comfortably for two. The interior of the home is distinguished as well as comfortable.
Graceful pillars at the covered entry lead into the lower foyer. The ground level features a bonus room, full bath, walk-in closet, and garage. Upon entering the main level, the south-facing wall is filled with numerous windows to provide the entire space with lake views and natural light. The hearth room with a coffered ceiling and covered terrace opens to the kitchen and dining area.
The best views were saved on the upper level for the master suite. Third-floor of this traditional carriage house is a sanctuary featuring an arched opening covered porch, two walk-in closets, and an en suite bathroom with a tub and shower.
Round Lake carriage house is located in Charlevoix, Michigan. Round lake is the best natural harbor on Lake Michigan.
