Inspiration for a large timeless brick floor wine cellar remodel in New York

Photography by Caryn B. Davis Located in the Cornfield Point area of Old Saybrook along Long Island Sound, this project brought a classic, yet forgotten beach house back to life. Through a little detective work and some creative ingenuity, we restored and enhanced the exterior to it’s former glory and transformed the interior to a highly efficient and functional home all the while uplifting its quaint cottage charm. On the exterior, we recreated a wonderful, airy front porch with cozy bench seats that look out to the water. The white cedar shingle siding is pre-bleached with a subtle flair at the bottom and a delicate break at mid-elevation. The asphalt shingles are not only beautifully matched with the siding, but offer superior reflective qualities to dissipate the heat of the summer sun. On the interior, we joined the front seasonal porch with the family room to form a larger, open living and dining space with paneled walls and ceilings anchored by the original round stone fireplace. In the rear, we carefully crafted a galley kitchen and laundry space with an adjacent first floor master suite. The diminutive house and property posed multiple practical and regulatory challenges which were overcome by a strong team effort, due diligence, and a commitment to the process. John R. This is southern yellow pine at its finest! 1 inch copper pipe! 4 x 6 beams! Interlocking 2 x 6 boards! End result customer was astonished! This pergola was constructed using methods never used today except by me. All of the intersecting joints use mortise and tenon joinery. All of the copper pipes are recessed into holes. Some of the mortise and tenon joints are double bypass. That of course probably doesn't mean much to the average reader. But if you are a woodworker you know exactly what I'm talking about and you understand the difficulty of assembly. I also challenged myself on this one by constructing it from some very simple drawings and no real plans. It was all done in my head! If you think that I'm bragging it's only because I am!

The major objective of this home was to craft something entirely unique; based on our client’s international travels, and tailored to their ideal lifestyle. Every detail, selection and method was individual to this project. The design included personal touches like a dog shower for their Great Dane, a bar downstairs to entertain, and a TV tucked away in the den instead of on display in the living room. Great design doesn’t just happen. It’s a product of work, thought and exploration. For our clients, they looked to hotels they love in New York and Croatia, Danish design, and buildings that are architecturally artistic and ideal for displaying art. Our part was to take these ideas and actually build them. Every door knob, hinge, material, color, etc. was meticulously researched and crafted. Most of the selections are custom built either by us, or by hired craftsman.

The central, public wing of this residence is elevated 4 feet above grade with a ceiling that rises to opposite corners – to the northwest for visual access to the mountain faces and to the south east for morning light. This is achieved by means of a diagonal valley extending from the southwest entry to the northeast family room. Offset in plan and section, two story, private wings extend north and south forming a ‘pinwheel’ plan which forms distinctly programmed garden spaces in each quadrant. The exterior vocabulary creatively abides the traditional design guidelines of the subdivision, which required gable roofs and wood siding. Inside, the house is open and sleek, using concrete for shear walls and spatial divisions that allow the ceiling to freely sculpt the main space of the residence. Contrasting heavy timber against concrete and steel, this barn combines modern and traditional methods of construction. An honest and simple interior tells the story of how the building was made. The structure has a stair tower capped with a light-shaft that reaches past the roof with views to the sky. Varied spatial volumes are integral to this experience of the building, and the landscape playfully joins in this expression, undulating up and down.
