The Potrero Residence is the archetype for Architecture Office’s iterative process. Nestled in the Santa Monica mountains and surrounded by avocado farms, our client asked us to design a monumental hilltop home with views facing every direction and an underground ten car garage. We developed three concepts, choosing one developed by modelling a floorplate and populating it with cube forms. Using modelling software, we “sliced” the cubes at different points and rotated them across the plate. Via the interplay of these segmented cubes, this process created unique trapezoidal forms on each floorplate.
Each floor in the Potrero residence functions as a unique relationship of forms and voids. In this building, each exterior-facing void—the spaces between the rotated cubes—is either walled with glass to create a floor to ceiling window, or subtracted to create a balcony. These punctures provide each exterior facing room in the house with a panoramic view over a different area of the property. The balconies give this home a variety of lighting conditions throughout the day, sometimes dark and sometimes light, reminiscent of cave dwellings.
This design process creates a unique exterior wall across every face of the building. The driveway-facing facade is sculpted to resemble a traditional gable roofed house. Working around the house reveals a much more complex and digitally derived form. In the center of the house, a gem-shaped courtyard offers light within the relatively deep floor plates.
Following the form building process, we developed a material solution using cast-in-place, board formed concrete—giving the house a weighty appearance and reinforcing its cave-like volumes. The rotated cube forms create diverse atmospheres within the interior, and singular aesthetic relationships to the exterior environment. Though grand in scale, our design process creates a fundamentally simple form, while the interior’s spatial conditions evoke the comforts of home.

The Lounge Chair by Poul Henningsen. A masterpiece forged by a singular piece of steel tube bent into the most comfortable luxury relaxation chair. One of the nicer things about the Lounge Chair is the way it seems to fit every different room that it gets placed in.

This project features an intelligently shaped trapezoidal pool, perfect for fitting seamlessly into a narrow backyard while retaining a sophisticated feel. The pool's inviting blue tile interior is beautifully contrasted by expansive, light-toned natural stone paving, which defines the generous lounging area.
The visual focal point is the raised water feature wall, which is elegantly clad in shimmering teal mosaic tile and topped with coordinating light coping. A singular, bold sheer descent waterfall cascades into the pool, introducing a soothing auditory element and continuous shimmer.
The entire sanctuary is framed by lush, mature landscaping that overflows with vibrant greenery and colorful flowers, creating a tropical, secluded atmosphere. The space is completed by contemporary, curved white loungers, offering a stylish spot for sunbathing, transforming this compact area into a truly private and luxurious escape.

Inspired by the words of Adyashanti, the equanimity of Buddha, and flow of the Roaring Fork River. The Client wished for aliveness and tranquility. At the base of red rock cliffs and the frontier of riparian lushness and arid hardscrabble practicalities, this design had to accomplish more than a marriage counselor does. Drought tolerant plant species, botanical form, hue, fragrance and motion coexist in a remarkable, singular harmony.

This large estate house was carefully crafted to compliment the rolling hillsides of the Midwest. Horizontal board & batten facades are sheltered by long runs of hipped roofs and are divided down the middle by the homes singular gabled wall. At the foyer, this gable takes the form of a classic three-part archway. Subtle earth-toned wall colors, white trim, and natural wood floors serve as a perfect canvas to showcase patterned upholstery, black hardware, and colorful paintings.

The kitchen doubles as the laundry- which we hid behind the sliding door on the right. Microwave and toaster over hide behind an aluminum appliance garage. We turned a small space in front of the original wall of the laundry closet into a 6" deep pantry with spice racks on both doors. We wrapped the wall with painted panels by the cabinet company to make the entire corner of the kitchen to be a singular piece.

When United Marble Fabricators was hired by builders Adams & Beasley Associates to furnish, fabricate, and install all of the stone and tile in this unique two-story penthouse within the Four Seasons in Boston’s Back
Bay, the immediate focus of nearly all parties involved was more on the stunning views of Boston Common than of the stone and tile surfaces that would eventually adorn the kitchen and bathrooms. That entire focus,
however, would quickly shift to the meticulously designed first floor wet bar nestled into the corner of the two-story living room.
Lewis Interiors and Adams & Beasley Associates designed a wet bar that would attract attention, specifying ¾ inch Honey Onyx for the bar countertop and full-height backsplash. LED panels would be installed
behind the backsplash to illuminate the entire surface without creating
any “hot spots” traditionally associated with backlighting of natural stone.
As the design process evolved, it was decided that the originally specified
glass shelves with wood nosing would be replaced with PPG Starphire
ultra-clear glass that was to be rabbeted into the ¾ inch onyx backsplash
so that the floating shelves would appear to be glowing as they floated,
uninterrupted by moldings of any other materials.
The team first crafted and installed the backsplash, which was fabricated
from shop drawings, delivered to the 15th floor by elevator, and installed
prior to any base cabinetry. The countertops were fabricated with a 2 inch
mitered edge with an eased edge profile, and a 4 inch backsplash was
installed to meet the illuminated full-height backsplash.
The spirit of collaboration was alive and well on this project as the skilled
fabricators and installers of both stone and millwork worked interdependently
with the singular goal of a striking wet bar that would captivate any and
all guests of this stunning penthouse unit and rival the sweeping views of
Boston Common

When our client bought this house, it was stuck in limbo between the traditional interior and a 90's modern structure.
The direction we took was a combination of calm beige color scheme with clean lines and smooth surfaces.
The continuation of the same materials throughout the house finally bonded all the different spaces into a singular home.
The two guest bathrooms were made with Cloe zellige style tiles and custom floating vanities made from white oak.
The same oak was used also for the built-in TV wall as floating shelves and base cabinets with a large, tiled center piece for the recessed TV and the electric fireplace.
The kitchen also received some of the white oak love in the form of the Island and the recessed cooking area.
The biggest issue with the kitchen space was the lack of proportions between the width and its length vs. the extreme height of the vaulted ceiling.
The solution I came up with was a secondary line of wall cabinets to be the same depth as the full height units to create a wrap around and make the space more proportionate.
Continuing to the master bathroom, here we have a true walk-in master bath suite, no door needed with this size of space.
All the walls received porcelain semi slab treatment. (72x36 porcelain tile) a lot of work went into selecting the correct tile pieces to give it the effect of a single slab installation but without the added cost.
All fixtures are by Kohler with their fantastic modern gold finish.
The result was a perfect flow of calm beige colors and warmth of natural wood throughout.

Our clients in Swarthmore were looking to upgrade their rear yard. They wanted to increase the space for hosting but were limited with the amount of area they could expand due to township limits. We decided to lower the deck so that the deck and patio felt like a singular area. With a Victorian facade we incorporated old world materials with the new. Add a deer-tolerant but bright planting and you have a very inviting space!

Located on an extraordinary hillside site above the San Fernando Valley, the Sherman Residence was designed to unite indoors and outdoors. The house is made up of as a series of board-formed concrete, wood and glass pavilions connected via intersticial gallery spaces that together define a central courtyard. From each room one can see the rich and varied landscape, which includes indigenous large oaks, sycamores, “working” plants such as orange and avocado trees, palms and succulents. A singular low-slung wood roof with deep overhangs shades and unifies the overall composition.

This Northwood’s retreat was designed and built in a sustainable process to minimize site disturbance. The primary structural beams of the main cabin are hemlock that were logged on site and cut in Henry Ford’s original mill. Most of the house is paneled in indigenous northern white cedar with hemlock ceilings and cabinets of red and white pine. The sub-floors are also made of hemlock. The home is timber framed, doweled, and jointed.
There is a high-efficiency propane generator and battery storage system that provides ample electric power. The home has been designed to take advantage of passive solar radiation and can be heated by the radiant bio fuel heating system. Walls and roof are super insulated and well vented to protect against moisture buildup. Natural ventilation is aided by the thermal chimney design that keeps the home cool and fresh throughout the summer.
The property has been recorded a conservation easement written to forever preserve the singular beauty of the steep slopes, ponds, and ridge lines. It provides that the land may not be divided or the timber harvested in a commercial cut.

On the Upper West Side of Manhattan, a transformative renovation project was unfolding as two spacious apartments seamlessly merged into a luxurious, expansive residence. Walls came down, creating an open and flowing layout that embraced the essence of open plan living.
The fusion of the two spaces allowed for the creation of a grand living area, adorned with oversized windows that bathed the rooms in natural light. The kitchen which is now a culinary haven, features state of the art appliances and a central island conductive both to cooking and entertaining. Bathrooms were reimagined into private recreates, each with its own charm. This harmonious blending of two large apartments crafted a singular, sophisticated urban dwelling that epitomized the grandeur of New York City living.

Succulents can be used in mass plantings or as singular, stand-alone 'pops' of texture or color. When used as a transitional anchor, specimens like these are ideal in helping connect one space to another.

The clients’ love of color inspired the focus of energy on a singular accent wall in the living room, which features an incredible 26’ elliptical ceiling. The selection of the artwork, an artist’s study of a Picasso work in a custom frame, was the focal point around which the entirety of the design evolved. A low seating area comprised of all custom pieces in neutral tones is functional and understated so as not to obstruct the views out the windows. With the neutral palette, contrasting textures in the cream leather ottoman, dark grey herringbone wool seating, petrified wood end table, and steel and polished concrete table add interest.
