A busy family moves to a new home stuck in the 90's in metro Boston and requests a full refresh and renovation. Lots of family friendly materials and finishes are used. Some areas feel more modern, others have more of a transitional flair. Elegance is not impossible in a family home, as this project illustrates. Spaces are designed and used for adults and kids. For example the family room doubles as a kids craft room, but also houses a piano and guitars, a library and a sitting area for parents to hang out with their children. The living room is family friendly with a stain resistant sectional sofa, large TV screen but also houses refined decor, a wet bar, and sophisticated seating. The entry foyer offers bins to throw shoes in, and the dining room has an indoor outdoor rug that can be hosed down as needed! The master bedroom is a romantic, transitional space. While this client is not on the road, he loves to cook for his family and closest friends. This is why this kitchen has the top of the line modern appliances, gas cooktop, and a whole back up pantry storage around the corner with full size refrigerator, freezer, and a wine fridge. Client asked us for a sleek and functional kitchen that has a dual purpose: it acts as an every day kitchen for the family, and it can be closed off from the areas of the house with hidden doors to become a catering kitchen for the parties. In lieu of traditional hood and pendants, we designed an incredible stainless steel hood that supports cantilevered structure with LED panel providing functional lighting over the island. This design was inspired by a fashion runway show catwalk and this kitchen certainly is a show stage for culinary excellence. The sleek design allows you to move around the kitchen without protruding catching handles. The doors and drawers incorporate state of the art technology allowing for simple tap or push on the surface for the cabinetry to open. This is especially useful when your hands have food on them when you’re cooking as you are able to use your knee or thigh to activate doors to open. Even refrigerator and freezer have a fully integrated hidden custom pull handle that looks like a vertical reveal – this allows for good grip to pull the heavy doors with suction, and the white acrylic panels are very easy to keep clean. Positions of two sinks on the island were specifically placed in the locations to facilitate the steps in food preparation - having them both on a single working surface makes it easier to work between them without dropping food or dripping water on the floors while preparing for cooking. Island incorporates a tall counter to sit at for a quick bite or just to stand around with you friends as you are preparing a meal. . Inspired by the vivid tones of the surrounding waterways, we created a calming sanctuary. The grand open concept required us to define areas for sitting, dining and entertaining that were cohesive in overall design. The thread of the teal color weaves from room to room as a constant reminder of the beauty surrounding the home. Lush textures make each room a tactile experience as well as a visual pleasure. This young family began working with us after struggling with their previous contractor. They were over budget and not achieving what they really needed with the addition they were proposing. Rather than extend the existing footprint of their house as had been suggested, we proposed completely changing the orientation of their separate kitchen, living room, dining room, and sunroom and opening it all up to an open floor plan. By changing the configuration of doors and windows to better suit the new layout and sight lines, we were able to improve the views of their beautiful backyard and increase the natural light allowed into the spaces. We raised the floor in the sunroom to allow for a level cohesive floor throughout the areas. Their extended kitchen now has a nice sitting area within the kitchen to allow for conversation with friends and family during meal prep and entertaining. The sitting area opens to a full dining room with built in buffet and hutch that functions as a serving station. Conscious thought was given that all “permanent” selections such as cabinetry and countertops were designed to suit the masses, with a splash of this homeowner’s individual style in the double herringbone soft gray tile of the backsplash, the mitred edge of the island countertop, and the mixture of metals in the plumbing and lighting fixtures. Careful consideration was given to the function of each cabinet and organization and storage was maximized. This family is now able to entertain their extended family with seating for 18 and not only enjoy entertaining in a space that feels open and inviting, but also enjoy sitting down as a family for the simple pleasure of supper together.

Water was an issue flowing down the mountain, so many rocked swales divert the flow. The area which we are presenting is the rear of the house that will be used to entertain family and friends, a place to unwind in the evenings and weekends. We designed the outdoor areas to meet the needs and desires of the owners. When one walks through the breezeway not only to see an expansive valley view, but a relaxing fireplace and living area below where relaxing begins. Walk down the stairway of natural cut stone, you wonder through a landscaped garden onto the living area patio. Looking to your left is the pool with ample hardscape pool deck; large enough for a party or just the intimacy of two. Separating, yet joining the two areas is the grilling island, bar and outdoor wood burning oven. On the other side of the living area we go down a few steps to the raised planters and conservatory/greenhouse where plant are enjoyed from seedling to flower, or one can read a good book. Each area has it’s own personality for conversation or contemplation. The area is surrounded with plantings to provide color or to silhouette on the gray winter sky.

Embracing an authentic Craftsman-styled kitchen was one of the primary objectives for these New Jersey clients. They envisioned bending traditional hand-craftsmanship and modern amenities into a chef inspired kitchen. The woodwork in adjacent rooms help to facilitate a vision for this space to create a free-flowing open concept for family and friends to enjoy. This kitchen takes inspiration from nature and its color palette is dominated by neutral and earth tones. Traditionally characterized with strong deep colors, the simplistic cherry cabinetry allows for straight, clean lines throughout the space. A green subway tile backsplash and granite countertops help to tie in additional earth tones and allow for the natural wood to be prominently displayed. The rugged character of the perimeter is seamlessly tied into the center island. Featuring chef inspired appliances, the island incorporates a cherry butchers block to provide additional prep space and seating for family and friends. The free-standing stainless-steel hood helps to transform this Craftsman-style kitchen into a 21st century treasure.

The goal of the project was to create a more functional kitchen, but to remodel with an eco-friendly approach. To minimize the waste going into the landfill, all the old cabinetry and appliances were donated, and the kitchen floor was kept intact because it was in great condition. The challenge was to design the kitchen around the existing floor and the natural soapstone the client fell in love with. The clients continued with the sustainable theme throughout the room with the new materials chosen: The back splash tiles are eco-friendly and hand-made in the USA.. The custom range hood was a beautiful addition to the kitchen. We maximized the counter space around the custom sink by extending the integral drain board above the dishwasher to create more prep space. In the adjacent laundry room, we continued the same color scheme to create a custom wall of cabinets to incorporate a hidden laundry shoot, and dog area. We also added storage around the washer and dryer including two different types of hanging for drying purposes.

This Upper East Side prewar interior was specifically designed as a guest apartment for friends and family to stay for long periods of time. They wanted their guests to feel like home while staying in the city. Our criteria was that it had to be functional while remaining tailored, sophisticated and inviting. The space was rather dark so we opted for wallcoverings and paint colors that were soft, textural and exuded contrast. Our design was to completely renovate the living room, bathroom and master bedroom/sitting area. The kitchen was cosmetic with floor stain, paint, hardware and lighting. Grey, taupe, white and black were accents in the living room and created a friendly environment. This room also had to function as a guest room therefore a pullout sofa covered in a Lee Jofa linen was the perfect choice. The Bedroom has a soft palate which is extremely welcoming with touches of silver and pale grey. The hints of peacock blue and brown transform the space completely and work well with the pheasant mirror above the bed. Having a small child, loving to entertain and looking to declutter and kid-proof the gathering spaces of their home in the quaint village of Rockville Centre, Long Island, a stone’s throw from Manhattan, our client’s main objective was to have their living room and den transformed with a family friendly home makeover with mid-century modern tones boasting a formal, yet relaxed spirit Stepping into the home we found their living room and den both architecturally well appointed yet in need of modern transitional furniture pieces and the pops of color our clients admired, as there was a substantial amount of cool, cold grays in the rooms. Decor Aid designer Vivian C. approached the design and placement of the pieces sourced to be kid-friendly while remaining sophisticated and practical for entertaining. “We played off of the clients love for blush pinks, mid-century modern and turquoise. We played with the use of gold and silver metals to mix it up.” In the living room, we used the prominent bay window and its illuminating natural light as the main architectural focal point, while the fireplace and mantels soft white tone helped inform the minimalist color palette for which we styled the room around. To add warmth to the living room we played off of the clients love for blush pinks and turquoise while elevating the room with flashes of gold and silver metallic pieces. For a sense of play and to tie the space together we punctuated the kid-friendly living room with an eclectic juxtaposition of colors and materials, from a beautifully patchworked geometric cowhide rug from All Modern, to a whimsical mirror placed over an unexpected, bold geometric credenza, to the blush velvet barrel chair and abstract blue watercolor pillows. “When sourcing furniture and objects, we chose items that had rounded edges and were shatter proof as it was vital to keep each room’s decor childproof.” Vivian ads. Their vision for the den remained chic, with comfort and practical functionality key to create an area for the young family to come together. For the den, our main challenge was working around the pre-existing dark gray sectional sofa. To combat its chunkiness, we played off of the hues in the cubist framed prints placed above and focused on blue and orange accents which complement and play off of each other well. We selected orange storage ottomans in easy to clean, kid-friendly leather to maximize space and functionality. To personalize the appeal of the den we included black and white framed family photos. In the end, the result created a fun, relaxed space where our clients can enjoy family moments or watch a game while taking in the scenic view of their backyard. For harmony between the rooms, the overall tone for each room is mid-century modern meets bold, yet classic contemporary through the use of mixed materials and fabrications including marble, stone, metals and plush velvet, creating a cozy yet sophisticated enough atmosphere for entertaining family and friends and raising a young children. “The result od this family friendly room was really fantastic! Going house hunting to find the dream home is difficult in every aspect, especially in NYC. The first apartment may have a feature that the other has but very rarely will one place have all. Most important is making sure the location and size works and everything else can be incorporated later. As the apartment our clients selected was "move in" condition its surely was not for what they work looking for in creating their dream home. We first started by creating a "wish list" of all of the essentials, which included; open kitchen, walk in closet, office space , larger master bathroom with stand up shower and soaking tub. With creating many different floor plan options, the only way we would achieve this was by sacrificing the 3rd bedroom. At this stage the 3rd bedroom was very easy for them to sacrifice as it gave them all of the wish list for now. In the future ,they could easily take the square footage from the new oversized living room and add that 3rd bedroom if it were necessary. Our first goal in the demolition stage was to remove all existing interior partition walls and start with a fresh new slate. By removing the existing kitchen walls the New Kitchen layout now combines it with the living room. The cabinetry is 2 tone color, flat slab doors for the modern look. State of the art appliances were installed; Integrated panels were installed on the fridge, wall oven, microwave, cook top. The sink is the ultimate chefs prep station sliding butcher block with bowls that slide over the sink. A garage cabinet was installed to conceal smaller appliances. The cantilever counter top adds the additional seating space for guests while keeping the bottom portion open for the view. The existing walk in closet was relocated to achieve the New Master Bathroom, Combining the spaces now gave us the option to add all the features. Floating vanity with double sinks, soaking tub, stand up shower. The glossy rectified tiles used are 12x36 and when installed make the grout line disappear and make it look like a solid wall. The chocolate floor tiles are randomly staggered then wrap up the tub platform and continue up one wall to create an accent. No tile edge was used but all tiles that meet on a 90 degree outside corner are mitered; tub platform, walls and shower niches. Heated floors were installed to keep the feet warm on the cold winter days. In the Master Bedroom we built a bed frame accent wall. Serves for multiple functions; eliminates night stands by using the niches for alarm clock / phone charger station, lights were added inside the niches for accent lights and raised wall paper was used to finish this beautiful feature. Each his and hers niche has an outlet, 4 way switch for the accent lights and 4 way switch for the recessed lights above when they are done reading in bed. Custom steps were built for easy up and down off the bed for the little puppies that could not possibly make the jump up. Other features throughout the apartment include; New bamboo floors throughout. Since the concrete ceiling slab cannot be chopped , soffits and drop ceilings were built throughout the apartment to accommodate recessed lights. Low voltage recessed lights were used with multiple zone dimmers for energy efficiency. Remote operated shades were installed The overall design was for the apartment was modern, simple lines and true elegance.
