This room encompasses one of the most technical examples of woodwork we’ve seen in a long time. Normally, to create a raised panel wainscot wall, pieces of 1x wood are cut and used to create the boxes, and panel moldings are installed inside the frames to finish off the look. This can be done by typical finish carpenters. The problem is that over time, the numerous joints separate and look bad. In the case of this project, we wanted to avoid that pitfall and do something exquisite AND long-lasting. Over several days, each section of the wall was laid out to determine the appropriate size of each panel. Electrical outlets or switch plates that weren’t centered were moved. Each panel was then specially made at the shop out of 3/4” MDF because its smooth surface is ideal for painting. The raised panels (the pieces that go into each square opening) as well as the panel mouldings (the pieces that frame out each interior panel) were fabricated off site at the shop. Between the set-up, fabrication and the installation, two skilled craftsmen required three solid weeks to make each aspect absolutely perfect. Other finishing details including using a “Back Band” moulding to cap the top of the wainscot and using matching moldings (base, window casings and crown moldings) in areas that needed it for continuity of design. This room’s woodwork is an exquisite example of true craftsmanship. Words and pictures cannot describe the level of skill required for this project. Once everything was completed, it was sprayed with white enamel paint and wallpaper was installed above the wood wainscot to finish off the room. In a nutshell, each wall panel was constructed like a custom made high end cabinet. Literally.

Our Modern Aspen ave. project was a home that grew out of our clients desire to have a modern home in the heart of the art filled, mountain-biking-community of Fruita, Colorado. Our original concept was to renovate an older existing home to be able to better function as a 2-3 bedroom home for her friends and family to come stay, ride bikes, play and enjoy downtown Fruita. Due to a combination of the poor quality of the existing structure, an almost non existent foundation and discovered geotechnical site conditions, the project became a new construction dream getaway. Design Concept: In developing this project our client desired, a modern, open floor plan home filled with natural light and a durable maintenance free exterior. From this program we massed the home into 3 distinctly separate zones contained within 3 simple modern forms; a transitional entry space, the public living spaces and the private bedroom spaces. These zones of the home were each to become visible from the exterior through the use of 3 separate durable exterior material claddings of wood, stucco and steel respectively. Spaces: The entry of the home, clad in wood, was created as a transitional space between the exterior and the living spaces by creating a feeling of compression before entering into the voluminous, light filled, living area. The large volume, tall windows and natural light of the living area allows for light and views to the exterior in all directions. The custom kitchen cabinets and cabinetry storage are “tucked in” under the stairs and loft allowing for a sense of refuge while in the “command center” of the home. In this design every inch of usable space was thoughtfully incorporated into its function. The private bedroom zone of the home has bedrooms stacked on 2 levels with the master suite on the main level and guest bedrooms and guest bath above. These Bedrooms adjoin a loft area that flows onto a covered and well shaded 2nd level deck. The loft and 2nd level deck allows for a separate living space to relax and gather with family and friends. Garage and Exterior landscaping: This project also considered our clients' need for storage and love for travel by creating storage space for an Airstream camper in the oversized 2 car garage at the back of the property. The design of the garage was flat roofed in order to preserve views and light on the north side of the home, while also allowing room for a photovoltaic (PV) solar system to offset electrical needs. The “lawn” and landscaping of the home were designed as a part of a no maintenance exterior requirement. Although wanting to be maintenance as maintenance free as possible on the exterior, her love for dogs required the home to have some form of grass, so we opted for a K-9 Grass turf system that is designed for pets and allows the turf to be rinsed into the soil through the use of a typical sprinkler system. Energy Efficiency: As in all of our homes, we design and built this project with increased energy efficiency standards in mind. Our standards begin below grade by designing our foundations with insulated concrete forms (ICF) for all of our exterior foundation walls, providing the below grade walls with an R value of 23. As a standard, we also install a passive radon system and a heat recovery ventilator to efficiently mitigate the indoor air quality within all of the homes we build. Above grade, the exterior walls on this home are built with 2x6 construction and sheathed with the Zip R-3 system allowing for an air and weather tight, R-27 exterior wall assembly. The flat roofs of the home are insulated with a hybrid closed cell foam and batt insulation system creating an affordable R-45 insulation. These roofs are covered with a reflective white, TPO membrane roof to reflect the excess heat during the hot summer months. The pitched roofs of the home are vented insulated with a breathable R-50 blown fiberglass insulation.

Foundation Wall Cracks Foundation wall cracks are the most common source of seepage in residential basements across CT and RI. Some of the common causes of these cracks are structure settling, concrete shrinkage or poor site conditions related to soil type and compaction, drainage or concrete strength. Most wall cracks are small in nature and typically pose no structural risk. Some horizontal cracks may reveal a more serious issue and may require crack repair from a structural engineer. Locating the cause of the problem and understanding the cracking pattern is the key to a successful repair. Our crack repair specialists are trained in many repair procedures.

Columbia Stone designed and installed the 23,000 square feet of French limestone cladding that was utilized on the exterior of a private residence in San Francisco, CA. The project included 2" thick typical cladding with 2 3/4" thick bands to create a reveal, as well as, carved columns, carved balustrades, carved cornices, carved window surrounds, cubic parapet caps, and carved chimney enclosures. The project provided several serious challenges including water control, waterproofing, and the fact that the location was very tight. The site only allowed for 10 feet of clearance on each side of the building and a 2-4 story elevation difference from front to back. Due to the soft nature of French limestone, extreme care hat to be taken in handling the stone. The selection and inspection of the material was a full-time job for Columbia's inspector in France, who reviewed each of the approximately 6,000 pieces prior to shipping. From start to finish, this beautiful residence took 5 years to complete.

In 2019, California's hills and deserts were filled with poppy and lupine as a result of a banner rain year. Millions headed out to the hills to capture the beauty. We can make it much easier on ourselves! It is entirely possible to have a super bloom in our home gardens every year. A rustic stone path meanders through a wooded site to arrive at the entry of this 2,800-square-foot home on Martha’s Vineyard, completed in 2001. The path sets the tone for the project itself: simple, functional, and integrated with the natural environment. The couple that commissioned the residence uses it as a summer getaway for family and friends. A master bedroom wing, a guest wing, and a central living, dining, and kitchen area provide a variety of spaces for living and entertaining. Augmenting these spaces are a porch, terrace, and roof deck—providing places for quite reading, gathering for drinks, or taking in unobstructed views of the night sky. The house generates human interaction and connections with the natural world. Ground level terraces and rooftop decks promote this interactivity while large sliding windows and doors literally bring the outdoors inside and encourage individuals to venture outside. The typical inside vs. outside boundaries of traditional buildings are dissolved.

Michael K. Wilkinson This home has the typical floor plan of many semi-detached homes in Washington DC. The challenge with this floor plan is that the kitchens are small and the enclosed porches do not lend themselves to any viable use. Our solution was to transform the square footage of the kitchen and porch into an asset for the homeowners. The new larger kitchen is realigned along the back of the house and the design even carves out space for a small powder room. • The clients’ opted for glossy white Ikea cabinets. Our designer worked with the cabinetry’s stock sizes and our crew assembled them on site. The island is 6.5 feet by 4 feet with a white quartz top. Believe it or not, this award-winning home began as a speculative project. Typically speculative projects involve a rather generic design that would appeal to many in a style that might be loved by the masses. But the project’s developer loved modern architecture and his personal residence was the first project designed by architect C.P. Drewett when Drewett Works launched in 2001. Together, the architect and developer envisioned a fictitious art collector who would one day purchase this stunning piece of desert modern architecture to showcase their magnificent collection. The primary views from the site were southwest. Therefore, protecting the interior spaces from the southwest sun while making the primary views available was the greatest challenge. The views were very calculated and carefully managed. Every room needed to not only capture the vistas of the surrounding desert, but also provide viewing spaces for the potential collection to be housed within its walls. The core of the material palette is utilitarian including exposed masonry and locally quarried cantera stone. An organic nature was added to the project through millwork selections including walnut and red gum veneers. The eventual owners saw immediately that this could indeed become a home for them as well as their magnificent collection, of which pieces are loaned out to museums around the world. Their decision to purchase the home was based on the dimensions of one particular wall in the dining room which was EXACTLY large enough for one particular painting not yet displayed due to its size. Sunday, June 28, 3:30 to 5:00pm | Potomac, MD Family Retreat by Lila Fendrick and Doug Stookey of Lila Fendrick Landscape Architecture and Garden Design The landscape architects incorporated an adjoining lot to create this delightful family retreat where the clients spend time with their two sons growing vegetables, swimming, playing in splash pools, soaking in the hot tub, hiding in a below-grade fort, and running through a maze of paths formed by towering shrubs. The height differential between the owner’s house and the crest of the new lot presented opportunities for linking the two lots. The landscape architect designed dramatic lawn steps up to the new pool and pool house complex, designing tiers of waterfalls around a sunken spa, terracing the site with playfully hidden paths, and concealing a lower level parking area and garage. The project uses locally sourced Western Maryland stone on the pool house/guest house and Delaware River Jacks for the pebble paving. Utah-sourced quartzite-sandstone boulders reflect the clients’ appreciation for rugged western American landscapes. The variety of materials, linked by color and texture, and the unusual programming create a place of retreat and fun that feels far from the typical Washington, DC, area backyard.
