Upon entering the great room, the view of the beautiful Minnehaha Creek can be seen in the banks of picture windows. The former great room was traditional and set with dark wood that our homeowners hoped to lighten. We softened everything by taking the existing fireplace out and creating a transitional great stone wall for both the modern simplistic fireplace and the TV. Two seamless bookcases were designed to blend in with all the woodwork on either end of the fireplace and give flexibly to display special and meaningful pieces from our homeowners’ travels. The open design displays a custom brick fire place that fits perfectly into the log-style hand hewed logs with chinking and exposed log trusses.

This modern renovation creates a focal point for a cool and modern living room with a linear fireplace surrounded by a wall of wood grain granite. The TV nook is recessed for safety and to create a flush plane for the stone and television. The firebox is enhanced with black enamel panels as well as driftwood and crystal media. The stainless steel surround matches the mixed metal accents of the furnishings.

This fireplace used to be a floor to ceiling large round stone fireplace that was too heavy for the room. The Client was looking for a more clean line and reduced in size fireplace, so we designed a fireplace that incorporated the use of dry stacked quartzite stone with a custom made beaded mantel. In place of the slate hearth we installed a leathered piece of black granite.
