This staircase makes a bold design statement through restraint and precision. Thick squared-off white oak treads appear to float between dramatic, black-painted stringers, while horizontal 1/2" round bars create an open, minimal balustrade. The uniform open risers allow natural light to cascade down to the basement level, transforming the stairwell into a light-transmitting vertical shaft. The design thoughtfully responds to the surrounding spaces, connecting levels without interrupting sightlines or blocking light flow. The concept for this project was to reveal the sensation of an active, living landscape in flux and echo the vitality and energy of the wetland that comprises much of this rural site. A mosaic of shifting concrete slabs, set in a field of limestone bands and chip seal, flows through screens of bamboo, set in motion by the slightest breeze. The implied motion of the ground plane blurs the boundary where the terrace and parking court meet, serving the dual purpose of expanded entertaining area or overflow parking during large gatherings. The clipped formal hedge that folds around the house and delineates the lawn stands in stark opposition to the unrestrained hemlock forest that envelops the property, heightening the contrast between the two. The shifting planes of the boardwalk entrance connects these volumes, defining the primary visual and functional axes of the site. Scott Carman

Studio Terrain recreated this outdoor entertaining after a major home extension. Taking advantage of sweeping 180 degree views of the Puget sound, Orca Pods, Humpback whales and the Olympic mountains, the design allows for maximum view corridors from the inside while still providing space for 40+ guests. Utilizing a louvered roof system and overhead heat for four seasons entertaining, the wood fired pizza oven provides a central gathering point year round. The lawn was engineered to the same specs as world class soccer fields providing fast draining lawn use in the wettest seasons. A clean concrete lawn edge is actually a hidden structural retaining wall with pin piles to stabilize the slope edge.
