Wellborn + WrightWellborn + Wright has teamed up with Richmond native Cobblestone Development Group again for this incredible renovation. What was originally a constricting, one story brick ranch house from the mid 20th century is now a bright, soaring, three story home with a much more open and inviting floor plan. Wellborn + Wright was happy to provide the smooth surface box beams that ran along the ceiling and “sectioned off” the individual living spaces on the first floor – kitchen, living room, dining room – without actually dividing the space itself. A mantle (not shown) and kitchen island counter top made from reclaimed white oak can be found in the kitchen and living room respectively. It should be noted that, while W+ didn’t provide the flooring for this project, what you see here is an exact match to our South Hampton oak flooring – so if you like what you see on the floors just as much as the ceiling, we can definitely help you there!

Media Room:
In the downstairs media room Stephanie started with the fireplace as a focal point, creating a global feel within a club-like atmosphere. Dark, rich browns and blues combine with fabrics from velvet to leather to create an inviting space unlike the typical media room or man cave. Stephanie featured pieces from Century Furniture, Lazar and Natuzzi, selecting recliners and swivel chairs to encourage engagement among guests. Outside the media room, Stephanie created a seating area with selections from Vanguard and Century Furniture. Complementary colors connect the two spaces and offer an overflow room for entertaining.
This home was designed from start to finish by Stephanie James with Allen and James Interiors at Furnitureland South. While Stephanie’s long-time clients were in the process of determining finishes and textures, from cabinetry to flooring to counter tops, they visited Furnitureland South. He had contemporary tastes that gravitated toward leather and angles; she was drawn toward softer fabrics and curves that occasionally bordered on traditional. They both agreed that Stephanie should help them select furnishings, fabrics and textures that would result in a contemporary home with warm elements that were beautiful, comfortable and welcoming, while reflecting both their aesthetics. Christianson Construction, Inc.The client initially contacted us because the Master Bathroom needed to be repaired, and from there the project transformed into a whole house remodel, fulfilling a dream the homeowners had since moving into the house 17 years ago. The entire house was filled with wallpaper, and the cabinets were built at a larger 42" height for taller homeowners (you'll want to check out the Before & Afters at the end of the slideshow). When approaching the remodel, the client asked our Designer to create a couple of material options to present to her for each area of the house; Kitchen, Master Bathroom, and Utility Room. Through design meetings, the Designer and the Homeowner collaborated to create these beautiful selections that have completely transformed the look of the house.

Living Room:
The living room is all about symmetry in layout and furnishings, something Stephanie loves to create in her living spaces. Elegant sofas and chairs by Natuzzi provided plentiful seating and give this room an element of design, anchored by a large cocktail table with gorgeous marble inserts.

Woven Asian motifs layered with grays and espresso finishes give this room a timeless elegance that connects with the flooring and adjacent rooms. Stephanie selected dining chairs by Selva to complement the clients’ refinished dining table, while a luxury mirror and floating table from Christopher Guy add a sense of art to the small wall across from the entry.

Trade Design BuildThis new 3,600 SF 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom, two-story residence is located halfway between the heart of downtown Ithaca and Taughannock Falls State Park. The site has beautiful views of Cayuga Lake and is situated on the heavily traveled Route 89. Trade Design Build was hired for full design-build services, starting with site feasibility, concept design, permit and construction drawings, through construction. The slideshow above shows theses stages of the project, including photos of the completed exterior.
Our clients purchased the tight one-acre lot with an existing condemned home onsite that needed to be demolished, and the site reimagined. They were looking for a simple, contemporary home with clean lines and quality materials, that maximized views of the lake.
To meet these goals, the design team stretched the home out across the site and pushed all the habitable spaces to the lakeside of the home so that each space, including bathrooms, have an incredible view of Cayuga Lake. An access corridor on the roadside has the added benefit of buffering living spaces from the noise of the highway. To ensure clean lines and a contemporary feel, the team used simple forms on the interior and exterior. The simplicity of the rectangle and pitched roof allowed for higher quality windows, siding and metal roofing.

Katie Hutchison StudioThe previous front porch — captured in the “before” photos of the slideshow — was puzzling. The owner of this two-family home in New Bedford wasn’t sure how it had evolved, but both the first- and second-floor porch levels appeared to have been added on top of previous porches, which made for very curious enclosing guardrails. When the owner approached KHS, she was ready to completely remove the haphazard porches and start fresh with something more in keeping with her American Foursquare-style home.
The new porches allow more daylight to reach the interior at both levels, while maintaining privacy from the street with guardrails containing paneled piers and tightly spaced balusters. New wide steps that have lower riser heights set the stage for a gracious entry. Since low maintenance materials were a priority for this homeowner, much of the porch is comprised of Azek trim elements. The porch decking is mahogany. New tapered posts and a gently sloped upper-porch roof meet the inset upper-level guardrail in a manner reminiscent of some of the more traditional porch treatments in the neighborhood. Transforming the porches has transformed this home’s curb appeal.
