The goal of this kitchen remodel was to create a more functional and enlarged kitchen because the owner is an avid cook. Expanding the available space for the kitchen involved moving the patio doors to the family room to access the backyard under a newly constructed porch roof. The owners stand at different heights and the goal of the overall kitchen design was to be a comfortable workspace for all the residents. They opted to eliminate upper cabinets, since they are hard to reach and instead incorporate tall pantry-style cabinets at the north wall, complete with a very important breakfast coffee, smoothie, and juice station that is "hidden" behind tuck-away doors. Every inch of the kitchen was considered to store all their essentials, including a designated spot for a step-stool. This kitchen design also incorporates double dishwashers. This self-described style is New Traditional with a West coast cool-casual with some east coast English antiques and that are reflected in the home elsewhere, The home also reflected a slightly French design style, so Factor Design Build aimed for a clean, classic, and timeless look with a custom Venetian plaster hood, Quartzite countertops, and inset cabinets. The view to the backyard was enhanced by flanking the hood with large windows. The clients felt that it was important that most-touched items be high-quality and unlacquered metal, so the cabinet hardware is by Ashley Norton, and the plumbing fixtures from Waterworks. The clients had a special affinity for the Chamonix quartzite for the countertops and splash.

One of the drawers near the center island opens up and holds a composter underneath. There is also an urban cultivator that allows the owner to grow and cut fresh herbs and delight in the convenience of the location. The kitchen is perfected and the owner utilizes the kitchen with ease leading to an increase in overall functionality. In addition to the pantry, the client wanted to clear some counter space next to her Vitamix for smoothie making. We moved her toaster (not used often), KitchenAid stand mixer (not used often), and a few extra coffee makers and grinder off the counter. We put all of her different coffee pods and grounds together next to the mugs and to go cups. Everything needed to make coffee is here in one area and right next to the refrigerator (for the oat milk!)

For sanity's sake I wanted as many things behind closed doors as possible. Coffee maker and blender behind doors. A pull out cutting board next to blender for smoothies. The door to the left includes the microwave and the toaster.

Our client wanted to take their 1970s kitchen to the 2020s. The original kitchen had many issues - inefficient cabinet space, choppy countertop layout, dated appliances, an obtrusive pantry that blocked access into the kitchen and provided poor storage, and a 1970's style step-down into the space. They requested a space that was clean, bright and open with a modern/mid-century feel where they could easily cook at home and entertain family and friends. Improvements included: - Raising the floor to make it level with the rest of the house - Removing the obtrusive pantry and converting the water heater closet into the new pantry space - Combining the two water heaters into one tank-less water heater - Appliances were moved to create more counter space. The cooktop and oven were combined into a range. The microwave was moved to under the counter. The original trash compactor was replaced by a pull-out waste bin. - The double basin sink was replaced by a single, large basin better suited for washing large pots, pans and tray. Accessories such as a cutting board and strainer fit over the sink making food prep and clean up easier. - The pantry was custom built to fit the clients' needs with pull-out shelves to make accessing everything in the back easier. A socket was installed to create a coffee and smoothie station that can be hidden when not in use behind the pantry doors keeping the countertops cleared. - Custom panels were manufactured for the refrigerator and dishwasher to hide the appliances. - A unique 3-D tile backsplash was installed from counter to ceiling to create eye-catching movement. - Electrical sockets were hidden under the upper cabinets and light switches on either side of the sink were turned horizontal to preserve the look and motion of the backsplash. The dated kitchen with a challenging layout and inefficient storage was replaced with a bright, welcoming kitchen with clean lines and creative touches. The clients are beyond thrilled with the transformation and say that it is the ideal place to gather.
