This kitchen was updated by removing a peninsula and adding a center island. The contemporary flat panel door is warmed by the soft color of the textured laminate and then sharpened by the use of 2mm 3d brushed aluminum edge. This simple laminate door with the granite countertops and glass tile in neutral shades of green add an organic touch. The Microwave was built into a wall of tall storage for easy access. This wall provides multiple areas for storage. Floating cabinets were added on the wall near the table to provide an additional serving area. By updating the cabinetry along the half wall which looks into the dining room, this socially active couple can entertain a large group of people by utilizing both areas.

These clients have a large family with teen kids and wanted a modern updated basement to accommodate their social activities and draw the kids to their house to hang out. With plenty of room in the basement, we designed a full-service bar, equipped with a sink, dishwasher drawers, icemaker, beverage refrigerator and liquor storage. Framing was added over the bar to accentuate the shape of the bar and give the feeling of a floating bulkhead. A wall of glass mosaic was added to give texture and depth to the space, along with a leather upholstered overlay on the front of the bar. The counter tops are a combination of Quartz and Eucalyptus wood with poured resin over the top for protection. There is a lounge area with a projection TV and 84” wide screen with plenty of seating and storage for games. The other end of the basement hosts a ping pong table set aside for the serious players. The existing lighting was removed and a new lighting layout with fixtures were installed to address any activities that might be occurring in the various spaces. The end result is an incredible living space in the basement for both the teens and their friends, as well as the adults to enjoy games on the big screen as well as a rambunctious game of ping pong.

The Clients contacted Cecil Baker + Partners to reconfigure and remodel the top floor of a prominent Philadelphia high-rise into an urban pied-a-terre. The forty-five story apartment building, overlooking Washington Square Park and its surrounding neighborhoods, provided a modern shell for this truly contemporary renovation. Originally configured as three penthouse units, the 8,700 sf interior, as well as 2,500 square feet of terrace space, was to become a single residence with sweeping views of the city in all directions. The Client’s mission was to create a city home for collecting and displaying contemporary glass crafts. Their stated desire was to cast an urban home that was, in itself, a gallery. While they enjoy a very vital family life, this home was targeted to their urban activities - entertainment being a central element. The living areas are designed to be open and to flow into each other, with pockets of secondary functions. At large social events, guests feel free to access all areas of the penthouse, including the master bedroom suite. A main gallery was created in order to house unique, travelling art shows. Stemming from their desire to entertain, the penthouse was built around the need for elaborate food preparation. Cooking would be visible from several entertainment areas with a “show” kitchen, provided for their renowned chef. Secondary preparation and cleaning facilities were tucked away. The architects crafted a distinctive residence that is framed around the gallery experience, while also incorporating softer residential moments. Cecil Baker + Partners embraced every element of the new penthouse design beyond those normally associated with an architect’s sphere, from all material selections, furniture selections, furniture design, and art placement. Our socially engaged, active client transplanted from the East Coast found a charming older home in Minneapolis that provided a home base in a new city. While the home had its charm, the dark interior didn’t provide the uplifting respite she desired. With a busy travel schedule and calendar full of after-hours social events, she was looking for a space to unwind at the end of a long day. She wanted to maximize her time at home, and a place to host friends pre-gala. We transformed an extra bedroom into a happy-hour type lounge with upholstered chairs and bar cart along with her Grandmother’s vanity and privacy screen for the ultimate pre-gala experience. In the kitchen, we replaced the dark cabinetry with open painted shelves to lighten the space and provide convenient access to her glassware, adding sparkle to the room. And perhaps most importantly, her bedroom is now a quiet, peaceful refuge with luxurious details that wrap her in warmth and relaxation. ------- Project designed by Minneapolis interior design studio LiLu Interiors. Sight & Sound This clean modern south Oakville Ontario remodel proves you don’t need to move to a condo to completely update your surroundings. These Oakville empty nesters with an active social life aren't interested in “fuddy-duddy” decor. On the contrary, they are interested in the latest design trends, as well as the most current audio/visual components. The original stone fireplace was updated with a custom designed mantle and a new gas insert. The updated warm grey colour palette balances the natural stone making it an inviting focal point. The interior design included reconfiguring the room layout. Originally a smaller TV was located in-between the window and the fireplace and the sofa was where the current cabinet is now. Our new layout opens up the room taking full advantage of it’s size. The sumptuous sectional allows for relaxed tete a tete evenings as well as seating for larger groups. The additional leather occasional chair completes the conversation circle too. We naturally selected fabrics that are family friendly to ensure the grandchildren and adults can all be at ease. The flexibility of the 3 piece coffee table is both practical and adds an element of modern artistry. Grounding the room is a carpet graphic grey animal skin custom sized into an area rug. Our clients envisioned a clean, contemporary kitchen designed for both functionality and entertaining. Passionate about cooking and entertaining guests, their priorities included generous work surfaces, discreet storage for small appliances, and ample space for serving ware, cookware, and dinnerware. The cabinetry was selected for both aesthetics and ease of maintenance. A minimalist, hardware-free look keeps the space visually uncluttered. Lower cabinets operate via a continuous Euro-style channel, which seamlessly integrates with the refrigerator panels. Upper and tall cabinets feature a mix of touch-latch and servo-driven mechanisms, enhancing accessibility while maintaining a sleek profile. A raised bar conceals cooktop clutter during meal prep and creates a welcoming space to serve and engage with guests. The U-shaped layout was essential to keep the work zone distinct from social areas while allowing smooth movement around the kitchen. Lighting played a central role in the design. Multiple layers of illumination, all set to a bright 5000K color temperature per the homeowners' request, include dimmable toe-kick lights and a continuous recessed light channel along the tall cabinets. These create both ambiance and high-function lighting as needed. For entertaining large groups, the kitchen features multiple ovens and a warming drawer—perfect for entertaining. On the refrigerator wall, servo-activated countertop cabinets conceal small appliances, with the countertop surface continuing inside for easy access. A built-in, barista-quality coffee machine is nestled between these cabinets, adding a touch of luxury. For a clean look free of visible outlets, the team installed touch-activated, pop-out Legrand outlets with three-sided access. The color was custom-matched to complement the veining in the quartz countertops. The tall cabinet adjacent to the double oven stores everyday dishware, conveniently located for setting the nearby dining table. At the end of the peninsula, a servo-activated double trash pullout allows easy access without interfering with the cook. A dedicated utensil pullout beside it keeps tools within reach while maintaining clear countertops.

An outdoor kitchen setup under a pergola, a feature that blends modern amenities with the natural desert environment of Phoenix, Arizona. The kitchen is equipped with a state-of-the-art grill, stainless steel appliances, and ample cabinet space made from rich, dark wood that contrasts nicely with the lighter stone countertops and the stone veneer that partially clads the kitchen island. Above, the pergola provides shelter from the sun while still allowing light to filter through its slatted roof, creating a comfortable and bright cooking and entertainment area. KAZE Interior Design Studio designed a home for a family of 5 and their dog. The space needed to be family friendly with the kitchen at its heart. A small corner was set aside for a computer work area and a play corner created right next to the kitchen so that the kids can do their homework without being alienated in a room upstairs. The kitchen has two ovens so that pizzas and a roast can be cooked at the same time. Sofa style seating is also placed close to the kitchen to provide a relaxed area where the kids can play games and do craft activities. The dining area is situated at the very end as this is only used when guests are invited to dine. The large TV and playroom and kids’ rooms upstairs are hardly used as all social events take place downstairs. In the parent’s room, a walk in closet and bathroom is made “en-suite” and the shower is pushed out to the terrace so that talking a shower in the morning is like waking up in a resort. Wood is used as a material throughout the entire house and in that sense, it reflects the Nordic touch and idea of our heritage.
