Recently, a captivating kitchen cabinets project was completed in Lynnwood, showcasing a transitional style that beautifully combines traditional and contemporary elements. The project aimed to create a fresh, timeless aesthetic while incorporating elements of functionality and elegance.
The foundation of the design lies in the choice of a classic white color for both the base and upper cabinets. The shaker-style doors, with their clean lines and recessed paneling, contribute to the overall transitional look. This style choice offers versatility and a sense of sophistication that complements various design preferences.
Adding a touch of contrast and richness to the space, a gray stained solid wood island was incorporated into the kitchen. This island serves as a focal point, anchoring the room while providing additional workspace and storage options. The gray stain adds depth and visual interest to the design, balancing the bright white cabinets with its subtle yet distinct color.
To enhance the overall aesthetic and create a cohesive design, brass handles were selected for the cabinets. These sleek, modern hardware elements contribute to the transitional style by bridging the gap between the traditional and contemporary design elements. The contrasting black color adds an element of sophistication and creates a visual impact against the white cabinetry.#seattlecabinets #transitionaldesign #shakercabinets #whitecabinets #kitchenisland #kitchendesignideas

Bespoke Blue Library for a lovely cottage near Bristol.
The problem:
The room was going to be their office, it didn’t have much storage and it wasn’t very big. It had a difficult wall nib sticking out behind the door running the length of the wall and the room and had very high ceilings 3.2 metres high. This is precisely why they decided to go bespoke.
The brief:
The clients wanted lots of cabinets and shelves to make a library / bookcase for an awkward wall in a small room. The clients initially wanted ‘L’ shaped cabinets.
Lots of bookshelves, and I mean lots, like a bookcase wall and somewhere to hide office equipment like the printer and phone chargers.
Book shelves needed to be strong so they wouldn’t sag under the weight of the books – this was of utmost importance to the brief, these clients love books and reading.
Adjustable book shelves so they could fit their books exactly and change it up when needed.
The bespoke library was to go right up to the very high ceiling and finish in a cornice.
The cornice needed a particular profile to match their existing furniture.
“It’s better than we imagined it could be” was the first thing they said when they saw it complete!
When we first visited and discussed the design for this bespoke library in Bristol with them, it became obvious that an ‘L’ shape wouldn’t work in the room, so the first draft was to have the shelves and cabinets along one wall.
There were around 5 revisions in the end, until the design was approved. The design was intricate and had to be spot on taking the wall nib and the opening door and latch into account.
The whole bookcase cabinetry was made from solid tulip wood, this is a strong and stable material to take the weight of the books. The cornice was specially commissioned to match the profile of their existing furniture. For the adjustable shelves we used brass bookcase strips.
The bookshelves are all solid English oak from our favourite local supplier a family run business called Interesting Timbers these were all finished in our rollered Osmo oil finish.
Jo hand painted the whole piece, inside and out, it in their choice of colour (Woad’ by Little Greene). Jim installed it to our meticulous standards and the clients were very happy with the results.
We are also delighted with the finished result! Do let us know what you think or get in touch if you would like to discuss your own project.

When it comes to defining a space, few elements are as transformative as a rug. Particularly in larger rooms, 9x12 rugs play a pivotal role in anchoring furniture, unifying aesthetics, and providing comfort underfoot. As home design continues to evolve, so do the styles, materials, and motifs that define contemporary rug choices. Whether you're redesigning a single room or curating an entire home, choosing the right 9x12 rug can dramatically influence the tone and function of your space. This blog explores the transition from classic to contemporary rug styles, highlighting current trends in design, texture, and sustainability. Read on to discover how 9x12 rugs are being used to redefine modern living environments in 2025.
Classic Rug Designs: Timeless Elegance and Historical Influence
Classic rugs have always been synonymous with tradition, craftsmanship, and sophistication. These pieces often draw inspiration from centuries-old techniques and cultural aesthetics, primarily seen in Persian, Oriental, and Turkish designs. A 9x12 classic rug is not merely a floor covering but a narrative woven through intricate patterns and deep, rich colors.
Traditional rug styles typically feature ornate borders, central medallions, and floral or geometric motifs. Colors like burgundy, deep navy, ivory, forest green, and gold dominate these designs, making them ideal for creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. The materials used often high-quality wool or silk add a luxurious texture and long-lasting durability. Hand-knotted techniques passed down through generations lend these rugs their intricate detail and resilience.
Today, classic rugs are being reimagined to fit modern sensibilities. Interior designers are pairing antique Persian rugs with contemporary furniture to create a unique, eclectic mix. For instance, a vintage 9x12 Rugs might lie beneath a minimalist glass coffee table and a sleek leather sectional, marrying old-world charm with modern clarity. In open-plan layouts, these rugs help delineate spaces and introduce visual interest. Their timeless beauty ensures that they remain relevant, even as design trends shift.
Moreover, the reintroduction of classic designs in modern colorways has allowed traditional rugs to appeal to a new generation. Muted tones, distressed finishes, and faded patterns give these rugs a more relaxed, lived-in feel that blends well with both rustic and urban interiors. For those seeking to infuse character and heritage into their living spaces, a classic 9x12 rug offers a versatile and enduring option.
Modern Minimalism: Embracing Simplicity and Subtlety in Large Rugs
As modern design trends continue to favor simplicity, functionality, and understated elegance, the demand for minimalist rugs has surged. The 9x12 rug format, given its expansive coverage, is particularly suited to minimalistic interiors where clean lines, neutral tones, and open spaces dominate the aesthetic.
Minimalist 9x12 rugs often utilize a restrained palette think beige, gray, ivory, taupe, and soft earth tones. These colors help maintain a calm, cohesive environment, especially in spaces where natural light plays a crucial role. Designs may be solid or include subtle patterns such as linear textures, tone-on-tone geometrics, or abstract gradients. The absence of elaborate ornamentation allows these rugs to blend seamlessly with contemporary furniture, making them a staple in Scandinavian, Japandi, and transitional interior styles.
Materials also play a crucial role in defining the minimalist look. Natural wool, bamboo silk, and viscose provide a soft, luxurious feel while maintaining a clean aesthetic. Flatweaves and low-pile constructions are popular choices, offering practicality alongside elegance.

This project aimed to cater to a multigenerational family that occupies the main floor of their home, with the kitchen being the central hub. With four adults passionate about cooking and entertaining, it was staged to be a unique project!
The primary aim was to enhance kitchen traffic flow and functionality, which was accomplished by introducing a nine-foot island with various features: trash/recycle, microwave, and storage for mixing bowls, utensils, and knives.
The range top was elegantly positioned at the kitchen's end, framed by a stylish cherry hood with sweeping curves and a classic herringbone tile pattern. This naturally formed a captivating focal point in the room. During the construction, we faced a hurdle due to a cross beam obstructing ceiling venting.
The formal dining room had two closely spaced doors, one from the kitchen and one from the hallway. To create a more functional pantry space and provide space for wall ovens, the kitchen entry was closed off. A highly efficient scullery-style pantry was designed with a 96” opening with 48" wide bi-passing doors; it features dedicated countertop zones for various large appliances that would be challenging to lift out of a cabinet.
The bookshelves were carefully designed to emphasize balance between the refrigerator and ovens, enhancing the flow and overall continuity of the expanded kitchen. The homeowner's vast cookbook collection, along with a few tchotchkes, adds personal character and color to the space. While this design element removed the option for a countertop next to the refrigerator and ovens, the homeowners were very comfortable with the sizeable adjacent island, which provides an ample landing zone.
Finally, the most daring choice is a bold blue hue. This topped with crisp white quartz countertops and warm cherry features, beautifully reflects the vibrant and joyful life of the family.
The spacious nook area transformed into an ideal indoor entertainment space that seamlessly complements gatherings inside and out. The choice of cherry cabinets, paired with striking black quartz countertops, was deliberate, as it added warmth to the area and established a solid connection to the stunning outdoor views.
Articulating arm sconces not only provided illumination but also highlighted the eclectic tiki-style glassware displayed on the floating shelves. Pendant lights strategically placed in front of each window improved countertop functionality, while the ceiling fan's light served as ambient illumination. The arm sconces, together with the brass-finished pendants, contributed to a cohesive design, extending the lighting theme from the adjacent nook area.

Elliot Street is one of our favourite floating stairs to date! This modern art deco staircase was part of a home renovation where the owners were adding a new addition to their Auckland home. It was designed with a steel zig zag balustrade and a wooden walnut handrail over the top of it which was cut and hand shaped on site. This style of metal balustrade is a solidly fabricated steel that is quite a heavy aesthetic, which we at Stairworks have noticed has been the preferred choice over glass this year.
The steel single stringer underneath is the structural signature feature of this style of floating stairs. That in addition to the open risers and L shape is not only space saving but also gives a beautifully airy illusion that fits into that modern design.
The wooden treads are made of walnut which we really loved working with as it is a very high end timber choice. The owners were able to reduce the cost by choosing to laminate the walnut treads to have the same look and colour. This was done by using pieces of small timber rather than one big chunk. The treads also have anti slip strips of aluminium running along and protruding 1mm off the end of the tread as an added safety feature to stop anyone from slipping down the stairs with socks on. We then hid the fixings of the balustrade with the help of a walnut end cap to cover all the fixings.
This floating staircase was quite labour intensive in the installation because we at Stairworks take pride in our finishings meaning everything needs to be done correctly down to the last detail. In the end, both we and the homeowners were very happy with the end result!

Built in 1979, this home in Pittsburgh’s Bradford Woods borough snuck in at the very tail end of Mid-Century Modern architecture. As lovers of that era, you can imagine our excitement when our clients explained their vision to lean in to that style with their planned kitchen renovation. We collaborated to design a beautiful and functional space that not only better suits this young family’s lifestyle, but truly feels like it has always been a part of the home.
Starting with the layout, we opened the kitchen up to neighboring dining room and eat-in spaces, allowing for a more cohesive main level floorplan. Along with some slight reconfiguring of the refrigerator and pantry locations, a new island created an opportunity for the main kitchen workspace to stay connected for both entertaining and day-to-day activities. Custom open shelving anchors the end of the island without blocking sightlines from the front of the home into the kitchen.
New light oak flooring throughout adds a contemporary nod, integrating two adjoining family rooms. It also creates a nice contrast for the kitchen and dining room’s custom cabinetry in a rich walnut finish. Slab style doors with minimal brass hardware help deliver the streamlined Mid-Century aesthetic. Custom radial edges at the island and coffee bar add a whimsical flair, highlighting the matte green solid surface countertops. To coordinate with the original tile found in the entryway, a neutral choice with rustic handmade detail adds warmth and texture to the backsplash and island base.
Rounding out the rest of this sunny space, Mid-Mod inspired light fixtures, bold patterned wallpaper, a mix of the client’s new and vintage furniture, plus curated textiles and accessories lend the “just right” amount of personality.
