This project was such an incredible design opportunity, and instilled inspiration and excitement at every turn! Our amazing clients came to us with the challenge of converting their beloved family home into a welcoming haven for all members of the family. At the time that we met our clients, they were struggling with the difficult personal decision of the fate of the home. Their father/father-in-law had passed away and their mother/mother-in-law had recently been admitted into a nursing facility and was fighting Alzheimer’s. Resistant to loss of the home now that both parents were out of it, our clients purchased the home to keep in in the family. Despite their permanent home currently being in New Jersey, these clients dedicated themselves to keeping and revitalizing the house. We were moved by the story and became immediately passionate about bringing this dream to life. The home was built by the parents of our clients and was only ever owned by them, making this a truly special space to the family. Our goal was to revitalize the home and to bring new energy into every room without losing the special characteristics that were original to the home when it was built. In this way, we were able to develop a house that maintains its own unique personality while offering a space of welcoming neutrality for all members of the family to enjoy over time. The renovation touched every part of the home: the exterior, foyer, kitchen, living room, sun room, garage, six bedrooms, three bathrooms, the laundry room, and everything in between. The focus was to develop a style that carried consistently from space to space, but allowed for unique expression in the small details in every room. Starting at the entry, we renovated the front door and entry point to offer more presence and to bring more of the mid-century vibe to the home’s exterior. We integrated a new modern front door, cedar shingle accents, new exterior paint, and gorgeous contemporary house numbers that really allow the home to stand out. Just inside the entry, we renovated the foyer to create a playful entry point worthy of attention. Cement look tile adorns the foyer floor, and we’ve added new lighting and upgraded the entry coat storage. Upon entering the home, one will immediately be captivated by the stunning kitchen just off the entry. We transformed this space in just about every way. While the footprint of the home ultimately remained almost identical, the aesthetics were completely turned on their head. We re-worked the kitchen to maximize storage and to create an informal dining area that is great for casual hosting or morning coffee. We removed the entry to the garage that was once in the informal dining, and created a peninsula in its place that offers a unique division between the kitchen/informal dining and the formal dining and living areas. The simple light warm light gray cabinetry offers a bit of traditional elegance, along with the marble backsplash and quartz countertops. We extended the original wood flooring into the kitchen and stained all floors to match for a warmth that truly resonates through all spaces. We upgraded appliances, added lighting everywhere, and finished the space with some gorgeous mid century furniture pieces. In the formal dining and living room, we really focused on maintaining the original marble fireplace as a focal point. We cleaned the marble, repaired the mortar, and refinished the original fireplace screen to give a new sleek look in black. We then integrated a new gas insert for modern heating and painted the upper portion in a rich navy blue; an accent that is carried through the home consistently as a nod to our client’s love of the color. The former entry into the old covered porch is now an elegant glass door leading to a stunning finished sunroom. This room was completely upgraded as well. We wrapped the entire space in cozy white shiplap to keep a casual feel with brightness. We tiled the floor with large format concrete look tile, and painted the old brick fireplace a bright white. We installed a new gas burning unit, and integrated transitional style lighting to bring warmth and elegance into the space. The new black-frame windows are adorned with decorative shades that feature hand-sketched bird prints, and we’ve created a dedicated garden-ware “nook” for our client who loves to work in the yard. The far end of this space is completed with two oversized chaise loungers and overhead lights…the most perfect little reading nook! Just off the dining room, we created an entirely new space to the home: a mudroom. The clients lacked this space and desperately needed a landing spot upon entering the home from the garage. We uniquely planned existing space in the garage to utilize for this purpose, and were able to create a small but functional entry point without losing the ability to park cars in the garage. This new space features cement-look tile, gorgeous deep brown cabinetry, and plenty of storage for all the small items one might need to store while moving in and out of the home. The remainder of the upstairs level includes massive renovations to the guest hall bathroom and guest bedroom, upstairs master bed/bath suite, and a third bedroom that we converted into a home office for the client. Some of the largest transformations were made in the basement, where unfinished space and lack of light were converted into gloriously lit, cozy, finished spaces. Our first task was to convert the massive basement living room into the new master bedroom for our clients. We removed existing built-ins, created an entirely new walk-in closet, painted the old brick fireplace, installed a new gas unit, added carpet, introduced new lighting, replaced windows, and upgraded every part of the aesthetic appearance. One of the most incredible features of this space is the custom double sliding barn door made by a Denver artisan. This space is truly a retreat for our clients! We also completely transformed the laundry room, back storage room, basement master bathroom, and two bedrooms. This home’s massive scope and ever-evolving challenges were thrilling and exciting to work with, and the result is absolutely amazing. At the end of the day, this home offers a look and feel that the clients love. A young family with a toddler bought a Decorist Makeover because they wanted budget-friendly decorating help for the living room in their new, bungalow-style Northern California residence. They were starting from scratch, and needed to affordably furnish the entire space in a way that was kid friendly, but adult-centric...a comfortable place to entertain guests, and relax and enjoy the fireplace and view. We started with a step off the porch and onto a sloping backyard that was unusable and we transformed it into a larger, useable outdoor living space by adding a circular seat wall with built in LED low voltage lighting, a natural gas burning fire pit, 790 sq feet of Tremron pavers, custom build walls that were sunken to add a cozy atmosphere. We build a veranda style step down allowing access all across to the patio from the existing porch. we installed Low Voltage LED lighting to the steps to allow visibility at night. We graded the entire back yard to allow the kids a great spot to play football and soccer, while maintaining a proper drainage system for storm water runoff. We also fixed all of the disrupted sod areas with 8000 sq ft of Bermuda sod and built natural areas full of plant material for privacy and aesthetics.

Copper abounds throughout this luxurious home. The woman of the house grew up in Arizona, where copper is abundant. It makes her happy. We love to use elements or pieces that are meaningful to our clients – it’s how one-of-a-kind interiors are created. The focal point of the entertaining is the commanding wood burning fireplace. Our blue ribbon winning design brings the materials and finishes from the exterior inside, creating a pleasing continuity. The entire great room has a surprising and bold cerise, yellow and gray color scheme. Rugs and ceiling coffers define its three distinct functional areas. This custom rug, made of gray wool with a cerise contrasting band, is perfectly sized for the space. The yellow and white transitional upholstered chairs are detailed with nailhead trim and yellow cording. The tufted ottoman in a fun pink and white geometric pattern can be used to put one’s feet up, as extra seating or a surface to place a tray of food and drinks. Set on a 5-acre lot just outside Nashville, The Rometta impresses from the start with contrasting black siding and a natural stone façade. A striking waterfall-style concrete walkway leads to the entrance—truly a work of art. In the back, you'll find a fenced-in yard complete with a spacious covered porch, a sparkling pool, and a cozy firepit—perfect for outdoor living. A dramatic archway opens to a two-story foyer with an elegant open staircase. The great room features a central fireplace flanked by custom built-ins, and the black-and-white kitchen continues the bold design aesthetic. Family dining is accommodated with both a breakfast nook and formal dining room, while a walk-in pantry and butler’s pantry add everyday convenience. The luxurious master suite is located on the first floor and boasts a tray ceiling and bay window. Nestled into the side of a mountain in the foothills west of Fort Collins CO, this home gives mountain views a whole new meaning. To achieve the homeowners’ desire for floor-to-ceiling windows in just about every room, we started by constructing a steel superstructure anchored to the granite bedrock. And then we basically filled it with wood and windows. Speaking of windows, huge sliding windows open up the kitchen to the covered outdoor kitchen, blurring the lines between indoors and out. Upstairs, the observation deck accesses the same view, only from above the pines. On the practical side, the exterior and interior wood lap and tile siding, with local stone accents, are both Nichiha brand products made from fiber cement. Nichiha siding is both fire resistant and weather resistant to give the homeowners peace of mind in the Colorado Front Range’s dry, sometimes challenging, climate. Similarly, the tongue-and-groove ceiling and soffit woodwork is Pakari, a wood product made by thermally modifying (i.e., baking) wood to make it more durable and fire resistant as well. The ballasted roof, accented by custom metal facia and built to handle the load from wet spring snows, also reduces the opportunity for flying embers to snag should a wildfire erupt near the home. This grand home isn’t without comforts, either. In-floor radiant heat keeps it toasty when it’s chilly out, and an EPA-approved wood-burning fireplace provides warmth and ambiance without nasty emissions. A full home automation system senses motion and turns on the lights as one progresses from room to room. And the two home offices make use of custom built-in desks and storage to frame the view. Who needs artwork?

This client was looking to dramatically increase their kitchens storage capacity. We were able to install cabinets the full length of one wall and get utilization from the kitchen island as well. Couple this with new countertops and flooring throughout the house and it all led to the client wanting us to start on their bathrooms!

“Wine & Hockey” is in this family’s blood. Long time Washington Capitals fans and wine collector. They have lived in this prominent golf-course neighborhood for several years and now it comes time to finish their basement. He has been collecting more than thousands of wine bottles from all over the world, possibly worth over a couple hundred thousand -- this is the time that he wanted to display and show it all off. Tailgater and diehard Capitals fan that they are, they own several memorable autographed player jerseys and lots of collectables worth being in hall-of-fame stands. With all these ideas in mind, we have started the construction of this basement. The main event room with big pub style bar fully equipped with a wine cooler, beer fridge, and a built-in wall for all top shelf liquor. Built with dark cherry wood and exquisite stone top under stylish pendent lights is a heart of this space. A hidden storage door built with display shelving just to the right of the bar, giving access to storage behind this bar. To the left of this a stone wall, an embedded fireplace giving a cozy feel for seating and gaming area while facing the giant screen TV. This carefully designed wine cellar features the best of the best wine collection in wrapped around mahogany wine racks, beaded stain grade paneling, exotic stone counter, Muriel center stone, equipped with high efficiency chiller system, all just behind custom made door arch panel glass door. “This view is spectacular.” Wide plank flooring throughout leading into the end of hallway. There is a Gym with mirror walls and rubber floors, room to burn off all the wine calories! The full bathroom with stoned shower, and immaculate fixtures just outside of the gym. The lighting effect is a highlight of this project. We designed a feature wall for framed memorable jerseys and hidden storage for all of their valued VCR tapes of capital games. This basement is not a regular space, but it is a hall of fame for Hockey and Wine.

Situated along a narrow lot in Germantown, New York, the cottage completes a cluster of existing buildings, forming an intimate courtyard on one side. Steel effect folding patio doors fully open the living areas to the expansive fields and the Catskill Mountains beyond. The homeowners, a young family with parents living abroad, envisioned a cozy yet modern ADU for extended stays. Designed by Lauren Cawse, AIA, architect and partner at The Art of Building, the year-round retreat draws inspiration from traditional local barns while embracing a seamless indoor-outdoor connection. Captivating Guest Cottage Design Enhances the Senses with Steel Effect Folding Patio Doors The modern ADU design started with the site itself. Positioned between residential and commercial neighbors, the elongated property required a careful balance of privacy and openness. Architect Lauren Cawse approached the layout by redefining the existing house and garage as the east and west sides of an outdoor room, with the new cottage forming its southern boundary. This arrangement created a clear courtyard near the main residence while directing the 800-square-foot guest house toward the open meadow and the distant Catskill Mountains. “The unique character of the site and its history inspired the architectural direction,” says Cawse. “The intent was to create a secondary structure in the compound in clear contrast to the modern farmhouse style of the house and garage.” A Barn-Inspired Exterior Adds Visual Flair The exterior envelope evokes a traditional barn with a simple gable shape, weathered wood siding, cedar shingles, and a foundation veneer made of local fieldstone. A large sliding barn door adds a complementary feature to the courtyard-facing side, creating a dynamic opening that maintains uninterrupted views through the cottage to the meadow beyond. Steel effect folding patio doors surrounding the structure add a modern touch of transparency, and simulated divided lites allow the contemporary glass wall systems to harmonize with the traditional elements of the modern ADU design. “The goal was to fully open the living areas to the outdoors, framing views to the meadows and mountains,” says Cawse. “The positioning of the NanaWall systems frames the views and, when open, dissolves the boundary between inside and out.” Interior Design That Mirrors Nature’s Tranquility Inside, the design program features a simple layout with one bedroom, a full bath, a kitchenette, and a living area with a wood-burning stove. The interior, a collaboration between The Art of Building and the homeowners, is defined by an understated palette and tactile materials that reflect the natural setting. Color is introduced through the framed glass views on all sides of the structure. Reclaimed timber collar ties span the ceiling overhead, while stone surfaces and naturally patinated metal accents add quiet texture throughout. Custom hand-painted Delft tiles along the kitchen backsplash add personal detail, and terra cotta flooring in the bathroom brings warmth and old-world charm.
