Beautiful wine collections need an equally beautiful display. Our customers located in the Streeterville area had an enormous collection, and we provided them with the added illusion of an enormous wine cellar! One of our favorite elements of this modern wine cellar is the mirrored ceiling. This is a creative trick to provide an infinite appearance that will elude to the idea of having hundreds of shelves! Each corner of this modern wine cellar is complemented by our different racking techniques. Our display shelves allow each bottle to have its own moment of appreciation, to create an artful look that is sure to impress. When our client approached us with an idea of housing their extensive wine collection in their modern high rise residence, we were thrilled! After viewing their incredibly modern home, we realized that we could not provide them with a traditional wine cellar. We were presented with an exciting task of reimagining our traditional displays, to a clean and sleek modern design. As designers, maintaining the flow of a home is very important to us and our mission is to enhance the home’s existing features. From the wine cellar door to the ceiling, we were able to bring our A-game and create a complementary extension to our customer’s home. Our custom wine cellar door is equipped with a matching threshold, that holds all of the cold air in place. When you take a step inside, you are greeted from floor to ceiling with exquisite design. From our customer’s collectible storage boxes to 4 upward facing display shelves, you are immediately aware that this is a work of art. Each display shelf is adorned with its own light strip that further draws attention to the collectible wine bottles. As you glance up further, you see our storage shelves in full force. Playing off of the vast collection, we decided to install a mirrored ceiling. This design element allowed us to have some fun, and to further accentuate the large collection. This modern wine cellar is complete with a clear glass insulated Modern door that creates a temperature-controlled environment, conducive for preserving wine for decades. As designers, we were presented with a wonderful opportunity to showcase several of our strong suits. This project started as a simple driveway remodel. The homeowners had multiple tree roots breaking through the concrete, so we came in and installed pavers for superior durability and support. During the project the homeowner mentioned needing to upgrade the pergola, so we kindly offered to help. Once they decided on the pergola, the homeowners realized they would need to redo the patio if the pergola was going to get fixed. The house was in an ideal location but needed to be expanded. Design Builders & Remodeling almost doubled the square footage of the home. Creating a new sunny and spacious master bedroom, new guestroom, laundry room, garage, kids bathroom, expanded and renovated the kitchen, family room, and playroom. The upgrades and addition is seamlessly and thoughtfully integrated to the original footprint.

Upon meeting the homeowners of this Nazareth remodel, we quickly realized this was not their first rodeo when it came to kitchen renovations. The project started with a very orange oak kitchen with an awkward layout that did not work for their family. The new u-shaped layout keeps everything needed for preparing daily meals within arms reach, while a central island serves as a landing space and buffet for family gatherings. Undercabinet lighting highlights the gorgeous Fireclay Tile backsplash and Bianco Rafaele marble, while Kichler pendants illuminate the island. The wall was extended at the end of the sink run to allow us to create a small office nook, perfect for typing a quick email or looking up a recipe, and an adjacent bar area allows guests to concoct their own drinks, away from the food prep. Recently Heidi and I worked on a Victorian tiled hallway floor at a house in Turton, Lancashire, an area which lies on the southern slopes of the West Pennine Moors. Victorian tile floors are commonly found in the reception area and hallways of older houses and public buildings, many of which date back to the reign of Queen Victoria (hence ‘Victorian’ tiles). It was during this time that the tile industry really started to boom. Upon inspection it was evident that the floor in question had suffered from some settlement in the past resulting in a crack in the base under the tiles which had lifted one side and dropped the other; this is quite common in old houses resulting in some of the tiles becoming loose and would need to be fixed back in place before the floor could be given a good clean and re-seal. Removing Lippage from Victorian Tiles The concrete floor under the tile was patched as best as could be without pulling up more of the floor and the tiles were fixed in place, unfortunately however many of the triangular tiles in the adjacent border would not lay flat resulting in a lippage issue between them which naturally the customer was not very happy about. Not wishing to cause the customer the extra expense of pulling up more tiles and relaying the concrete subfloor I left the tiles to fully set and then came back a few days later with a handheld Flex Machine fitted with a small 220 Grit Diamond pad to grind the tiles flat. As the pictures show, this made the difference and the diamond did not scratch the tiles despite the surface being dry. Diamond pads are usually used on stone floors but after some investigation back at the Tile Doctor training centre we also realised they can be used on other types of tile including Victorian. Once this was resolved the entire floor was given a thorough clean using a strong dilution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean worked in with a scrubbing pad. As well as cleaning the tile and grout it also removed any remaining sealer which is important if you don’t know the history of the floor as the previous coating maybe incompatible with the new sealer. Once done the floor was given a thorough rinse with water which was then extracted from the floor with a wet vacuum. Sealing Victorian Tiles The floor was left to dry and I returned later to seal the tiles with a couple of coats of Tile Doctor Colour Grow which is an impregnating sealer that soaks into the pores of the tile and intensifies colour whilst also providing durable protection from within. Normally I use Seal and Go on Victorian Tiles however in this case the customer had specified a matt finish. The results were fantastic and the client was very pleased with the now flat Victorian tiled floor which, thanks to the cleaning and sealing, was back to looking its best. Another happy customer for the Lancashire Tile Doctor!

This homeowner had their cabinets painted white a few years ago and they were already starting to see the wear. They were actually glad that they initially painted, because it gave them time to realize refacing was the way they wanted to update their cabinets. They wanted a different look to complement their existing quartz countertop. They selected the Shaker style door in the Swiss Elm Skye wood-grain finish. We also replaced all the drawers with new custom solid wood drawers with soft-close heavy-duty glides. Before, their corner cabinets were restricted due to the double doors only opening at 90 degrees. By replacing the hinges, they can now fully open the doors and access the cabinets. The homeowners are so happy with their refaced kitchen. They say it looks crisp and clean and more their style now.

So, what is her favorite part of the kitchen? Well, everything. “I love the whole thing. I agonized over every detail, like the legs on the table, which we sourced from a bar company. I also love the colors like the darker gray on the island and a lighter gray for the cabinets. And, I really love the pendant lights,” she says. Elisia offers some words of advice for other IKEA customers starting their own remodel project —especially those new to the process. “I suggest you spend time on Pinterest and HOUZZ to get a good idea of kitchen designs. When you find a picture you like, try to figure out what it is exactly that you like. That’s how I realized I wanted that vent hood with the tile/brick facade, for instance,” she says. “Also, I so appreciated having the help of IKD. They were experienced and knowledgeable about the IKEA software and IKEA products. Having a sounding board and someone to translate my vision into what I needed for the cabinetry was so great,” she says. She concludes: “IKD lets you be as involved as you want to be, so I was very involved. I knew to an inch what I wanted to see. I could make sure I was buying all the right pieces, and allowing for the space necessary to make sure the doors and drawers opened enough.” We’re so glad you love your kitchen Elisia!

When a Historic District home was renovated in Fort Myers, a dream kitchen was created: open plan enough for gathering, with clearly delineated areas for cooking, reading and entertaining. Challenge Bill and Alison’s existing kitchen was small and dysfunctional. Each room seemed independent, and there was no flow through the house. The house felt small, with one entry and exit point. As a planning consultant, Bill was no stranger to construction. He was a general contractor himself and had built several custom homes in years past. As a gardening enthusiast and professional educator, Alison also had an eye for design. They started with design, layout and planning on their own, but soon realized they needed help. After interviewing several contractors who seemed overwhelmed and unenthused by their project, they reached out to Progressive Design Build. Solution Mike was not only enthused about the project, but he established trust with Bill and Alison. Within a few short weeks he was hired to begin the planning phase, conducting thorough research on the project, meeting key subcontractors and establishing a realistic budget. When the project began, internal walls were removed to open up the kitchen/dining areas and an island was built, giving the space an open and modern functionality. The eating area was enlarged, and a visual connection to the outside was established using Marvin insulated glass windows with Low E coatings—which rejects solar heat gain without reducing visible light passing through the glass. In order to allow for the open concept layout that Bill and Alison desired, we built new structural beams to transfer the live load. The sliding patio doors opened onto a small terrace with a wrought iron handrail creating access to the private courtyard and garden area. Finishing details included custom cherry cabinets and wood trimming, 16” x 32” natural stone flooring, granite countertops and historically correct plaster finishes. Result The project was completed within budget and two weeks ahead of schedule. “That planning phase was the best money we spent on the project,” exclaimed Bill. “It was incredibly gratifying being able to watch the subcontractors and suppliers come and go with shared leadership and attention to details.”
