This client came to us looking for some help decorating the living/dining room and master of his new Chicago condo. Over the past few years, we have decorated most of the space together - great room, master bedroom, guest room, hallway, office, powder room and paint/wallpaper throughout. Our design was uniquely inspired by our client's sentimental and eclectic objects and art, such as the vintage Europe map in the living room, his grandmother's antique lamp and English pub sign in the office, and family airplane ephemera in the master. We added peacocks in the powder room and mixed prints in the master for a textured look unspecific to any era that flows with the rest of the home, but is definitely its own oasis. Because the project was built from the ground up, O’Brien Harris was able to integrate downdraft ventilation systems that maintain sightlines allowing the range to face outward—achieving both form and function without compromise. Two kitchen islands define the space, though each serves a distinct purpose. The first island is centered around the cooktop and prep area, while the second acts more like a piece of freestanding furniture—with seating, storage, and a softer presence in the room. Four oversized pendant lanterns anchor the entire space, offering both visual weight and warm illumination. To support entertaining, a full back kitchen was added behind the main space, offering the same level of functionality with additional appliances and prep areas. A fully retractable pass-through window opens directly to the outdoor entertaining area, making the kitchen feel as expansive as the outdoors. O’Brien Harris also designed and fabricated the cabinetry in the primary bath.

Our Kelowna based clients were eyeing a Vancouver interior designer, although there were plenty of capable ones locally. When we enquired as to why, they said they wanted a unique style, so we set out on our journey together. The design was totally based on the client’s passion for cooking and entertaining – one of them being an introvert, the other being an extrovert. We decided to fit two islands in the available space, so we started referring to them as “the introvert island” and “the extrovert island”.

The name of this project says it all. It is a home with materials, elements and details that are assembled in a modernist style that all have purpose and meaning to the Owners. This is a goal for every project, but in this case, extra care by the interior designer who is one of the Owners is evident as you move through the interior and exterior spaces. Exterior wall materials include a combination of split face earth tone natural brick and an off-white stucco finish. The interior finishes are a combination of stone tiles, various soft toned wood patterned finishes, wall coverings and fabrics, etc. that all give each space its own personality. Light fixtures follow suit with an array of designs that can set different moods for each room. It starts with the approach to a symmetrical front elevation that features an intimate entry porch with a hand-carved arched wood front door. One enters a main entry foyer that serves as a circulation spine for this 2-story home with 5 bedrooms, 5 full baths and 2 half baths. The design task was to create a 160 m2 family house, an elegant, light, cheerful home for a young couple. We could already start work from the architectural plans, so they could even initiate some minor modifications to those. Cooking plays an important role in the lives of the customers, so the detailed kitchen utensil requirements were part of the brief. They would also like to have kids in the future, so the goal was to make the kitchen, dining room and living room function as one space, and the dining room extendable. However, a relatively small space was available for this, so the kitchen was given an unusual formal design. With every detail in mind, the most current mechanical and intelligent systems have been integrated into the house: from the unique drying system in the laundry room to the chamber. An interesting solution is the placement of the sinks in one of the bathrooms, their back wall functions as a screen for the shower. In addition, one half of the building is underground, so those solutions have been preferred, which allow more natural light into the interiors (e.g., acid-coated glass and glass bathroom doors have been used in the common wall of the illuminated staircase and bathroom). We were free to walk between styles. So geometric, playful shapes, customer-preferred blue and oak veneered wood surfaces create harmony in the spaces. The walls feature contemporary posters, custom prints and contemporary artwork.
