There’s nothing as wonderful as walking into a mid-century gem with clients who love the character of their new home. Our goal for this project was to incorporate the mid-century bones of this home into a new design that would better meet the contemporary needs of our clients. We started by taking down the walls that had separated this kitchen from the rest of the home and creating a welcoming space that blended seamlessly with the new open concept. The new kitchen design was a win for our clients with increased storage, more work surfaces, and a peninsula with plenty of seating. We utilized wood finishes through out this space with light wood flooring, medium-tones on the cabinetry, and darker wood accents throughout giving us a beautiful balance and a calm backdrop. This home had beautiful horizontal lines that we wanted to accentuate, so we selected a dark wood finish for the central beam and tied it in with the dark finish on the wood fireplace mantel and the stair handrail to emphasize the horizontal features. But we never miss an opportunity for a fun mid-century pop, and this home provided plenty of inspiration! The boomerang hardware on the cabinets and escher backsplash tiles give us great geometric elements to break up the clean lines of the rest of the space. One of our favorite features of this home was the original plaster ceilings with the custom hand troweled texture. We knew from the beginning that this was an element we wanted to maintain and accentuate, so when we opened up the kitchen and added recessed lighting we reached out to a local plaster artisan to carry the texture throughout the space, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. This design brings together the mid-century aesthetics of clean lines and fun patterns with the modern-day functionality our clients were looking for in their new kitchen.

Resistant to loss of the home now that both parents were out of it, our clients purchased the home to keep in in the family. Despite their permanent home currently being in New Jersey, these clients dedicated themselves to keeping and revitalizing the house. We were moved by the story and became immediately passionate about bringing this dream to life. The home was built by the parents of our clients and was only ever owned by them, making this a truly special space to the family. Our goal was to revitalize the home and to bring new energy into every room without losing the special characteristics that were original to the home when it was built. In this way, we were able to develop a house that maintains its own unique personality while offering a space of welcoming neutrality for all members of the family to enjoy over time. The renovation touched every part of the home: the exterior, foyer, kitchen, living room, sun room, garage, six bedrooms, three bathrooms, the laundry room, and everything in between. The focus was to develop a style that carried consistently from space to space, but allowed for unique expression in the small details in every room. Starting at the entry, we renovated the front door and entry point to offer more presence and to bring more of the mid-century vibe to the home’s exterior. We integrated a new modern front door, cedar shingle accents, new exterior paint, and gorgeous contemporary house numbers that really allow the home to stand out. Just inside the entry, we renovated the foyer to create a playful entry point worthy of attention. Cement look tile adorns the foyer floor, and we’ve added new lighting and upgraded the entry coat storage. Upon entering the home, one will immediately be captivated by the stunning kitchen just off the entry. We transformed this space in just about every way. While the footprint of the home ultimately remained almost identical, the aesthetics were completely turned on their head. We re-worked the kitchen to maximize storage and to create an informal dining area that is great for casual hosting or morning coffee. We removed the entry to the garage that was once in the informal dining, and created a peninsula in its place that offers a unique division between the kitchen/informal dining and the formal dining and living areas. The simple light warm light gray cabinetry offers a bit of traditional elegance, along with the marble backsplash and quartz countertops. We extended the original wood flooring into the kitchen and stained all floors to match for a warmth that truly resonates through all spaces. We upgraded appliances, added lighting everywhere, and finished the space with some gorgeous mid century furniture pieces. In the formal dining and living room, we really focused on maintaining the original marble fireplace as a focal point. We cleaned the marble, repaired the mortar, and refinished the original fireplace screen to give a new sleek look in black. We then integrated a new gas insert for modern heating and painted the upper portion in a rich navy blue; an accent that is carried through the home consistently as a nod to our client’s love of the color. The former entry into the old covered porch is now an elegant glass door leading to a stunning finished sunroom. This room was completely upgraded as well. We wrapped the entire space in cozy white shiplap to keep a casual feel with brightness. We tiled the floor with large format concrete look tile, and painted the old brick fireplace a bright white. We installed a new gas burning unit, and integrated transitional style lighting to bring warmth and elegance into the space. The new black-frame windows are adorned with decorative shades that feature hand-sketched bird prints, and we’ve created a dedicated garden-ware “nook” for our client who loves to work in the yard. The far end of this space is completed with two oversized chaise loungers and overhead lights…the most perfect little reading nook! Just off the dining room, we created an entirely new space to the home: a mudroom. The clients lacked this space and desperately needed a landing spot upon entering the home from the garage. We uniquely planned existing space in the garage to utilize for this purpose, and were able to create a small but functional entry point without losing the ability to park cars in the garage. This new space features cement-look tile, gorgeous deep brown cabinetry, and plenty of storage for all the small items one might need to store while moving in and out of the home. The remainder of the upstairs level includes massive renovations to the guest hall bathroom and guest bedroom, upstairs master bed/bath suite, and a third bedroom that we converted into a home office for the client. Some of the largest transformations were made in the basement, where unfinished space and lack of light were converted into gloriously lit, cozy, finished spaces. Our first task was to convert the massive basement living room into the new master bedroom for our clients. We removed existing built-ins, created an entirely new walk-in closet, painted the old brick fireplace, installed a new gas unit, added carpet, introduced new lighting, replaced windows, and upgraded every part of the aesthetic appearance. One of the most incredible features of this space is the custom double sliding barn door made by a Denver artisan. This space is truly a retreat for our clients! We also completely transformed the laundry room, back storage room, basement master bathroom, and two bedrooms. A classic marble bathroom with modern conveniences. This bathroom utilizes all marble tile materials in a variety of different patterns. Starting with the floor and a basket weave pattern with a fleck of black to accent the granite counter top is also repeated on the accent border around the space. The wall is tiled three quarters of the way up with a brick joint subway pattern, topped with a carrara marble pencil liner accented with the basket weave mosaic and finished with a coordinating crown moulding. All of the remaining fixtures are in white and chrome to maintain a fresh and classic look.

Sometimes we start with a few foundational items and a blank slate. We’ve worked with these Clients on their previous home, and they were ready to make their bedroom suite all their own. Keeping the built-ins was a requirement as was wallpaper, some new window treatments, a closet overhaul, and all the decor and details. We kept the bed and drapes and swapped the rest to create a luxe sleeping retreat. Phase 2 of this project was to tackle the dining room and adjacent powder room. The dining room had a small sun room attached to it that was not being utilized. We turned it into a luxe home bar with custom cabinetry and a stunning quartz countertop / backsplash. Gold wallpaper on the ceiling completed the room and highlighted all of the fun metal details throughout the space. We ran the color from the bar through the dining room and accented it with bold wallpaper. We added some contrasting colors with the rug selection and brought in wood tones with the furniture to ground the space. (Kitchen SIde) This project started out as a Sunroom addition, but this Montigo H38ST turned it into a beautiful focal point of this rustic home. To try and match the existing brick utilized throughout the home, we used Slim Brick (Craftsman Series) and the homeowner was thrilled with the outcome. She has commented that guests cannot believe it was a recent addition, as it looks like it has always been a part of the house.

Featured this time are two projects in one home. A beautifully done kitchen and a very distinguished and sporty “Man Cave”. Used for cooking, eating, and conversations, the kitchen is one of the most visited rooms in your home. This open spaced kitchen with White painted Shaker doors and drawer fronts, house ample amounts of storage space. Utilizing our custom made accessories for the drawers like cutlery divider and the knife block, you can easily have within reach your choice of utensil. For the sporty person inside, the “man cave” is a perfect way to show off those darker, more distinguished colors like our Peppercorn finish on Ramsey door and drawer fronts. This is a contrast to the light colors played in the kitchen. This room is for those that love the richer, darker colors. The island in the center hosts cooling units to keep those drinks cold, and custom built shelves hold the collectables that anyone would cherish. The existing kitchen was large, but not laid out well for the everyday use it was getting. A bulky double fireplace in the center of the living space took up a lot of room and made the dining room feel disconnected from the kitchen, despite the substantial opening between the two. We removed the oversized wood burning fireplace and replaced it with a smaller gas one with shiplap above, creating a stylish featured piece. Meanwhile the kitchen was reimagined and reorganized into a functional space for a home chef that will work better for years to come. These homeowners’ main concern was to update the style and function, as well as having quality materials that would stand the test of time. They wanted updated, gray cabinets; but didn’t want to lose any of the warm feeling of their home. Together with our design team they chose a light, warm gray for the perimeter cabinets and a darker gray to make the island a focal piece. The warm, light colored quartz countertops blend with the lighter gray and contrast nicely with the island. The textured dark blue backsplash tile adds a fun and exciting pop of color without stealing attention from any of the other pieces. To further maintain the warmth, they chose a rich walnut flooring with bold grain patterns. When the homeowners fell in love with some contemporary brass colored light fixtures, they were nervous that they would compete with their stainless steel appliances and other silver toned pieces. By keeping all the lights in the same color family, we were able to achieve a look that feels intentional and modern. The corner 3-light pendant adds light and interest to the space. Not wanting to take up wall cabinet space with a bulky microwave, they opted for one built into a base cabinet. The other small appliances are neatly hidden away behind custom appliance garages. For the fireplace, we focused on a clean, bright look that would stand out and look beautiful without competing with the neighboring kitchen. A small powder bathroom was also reorganized to better utilize the potential storage space and add counter space for guests. The style of the kitchen cabinetry was incorporated into the bathroom as well as into the dining room, which featured glass front cabinets to display dishes and mementos. The redesigned space resulted in a warm and beautiful kitchen and dining area that will be enjoyed for years to come. The main floor living space now feels as cohesive as it was always meant to.

Our design vision for the pieces we designed and built for Prairie Architecture’s new space started with the reception desk. As the main focal point for their customers and clients when they are greeted we had to design a stately visual piece! The main feature of the reception desk utilized reclaimed Elm which was specified early on in the project paying homage to Winnipeg’s boulevards. Part of our overall concept was incorporating angular lines within the designs of the steel work. The folded steel helped create large flat planes presenting a beautiful contrast to the figured warm character of the Elm. The use of steel within our designs were to connect to PAI’s existing steel work tables as well as the steel in the heritage building. Details: 11′-10″ long x 3′ wide with 1-1/2″ solid Elm tops. We were excited to take on this full home remodel with our Arvada clients! They have been living in their home for years, and were ready to delve into some major construction to make their home a perfect fit. This home had a lot of its original 1970s features, and we were able to work together to make updates throughout their home to make it fit their more modern tastes. We started by lowering their raised living room to make it level with the rest of their first floor; this not only removed a major tripping hazard, but also gave them a lot more flexibility when it came to placing furniture. To make their newly leveled first floor feel more cohesive we also replaced their mixed flooring with a gorgeous engineered wood flooring throughout the whole first floor. But the second floor wasn’t left out, we also updated their carpet with a subtle patterned grey beauty that tied in with the colors we utilized on the first floor. New taller baseboards throughout their entire home also helped to unify the spaces and brought the update full circle. One of the most dramatic changes we made was to take down all of the original wood railings and replace them custom steel railings. Our goal was to design a staircase that felt lighter and created less of a visual barrier between spaces. We painted the existing stringer a crisp white, and to balance out the cool steel finish, we opted for a wooden handrail. We also replaced the original carpet wrapped steps with dark wooden steps that coordinate with the finish of the handrail. Lighting has a major impact on how we feel about the space we’re in, and we took on this home’s lighting problems head on. By adding recessed lighting to the family room, and replacing all of the light fixtures on the first floor we were able to create more even lighting throughout their home as well as add in a few fun accents in the dining room and stairwell. To update the fireplace in the family room we replaced the original mantel with a dark solid wood beam to clean up the lines of the fireplace. We also replaced the original mirrored gold doors with a more contemporary dark steel finished to help them blend in better. The clients also wanted to tackle their powder room, and already had a beautiful new vanity selected, so we were able to design the rest of the space around it. Our favorite touch was the new accent tile installed from floor to ceiling behind the vanity adding a touch of texture and a clear focal point to the space. Little changes like replacing all of their door hardware, removing the popcorn ceiling, painting the walls, and updating the wet bar by painting the cabinets and installing a new quartz counter went a long way towards making this home a perfect fit for our clients

There are so many design elements to this kitchen, I almost don’t know where to start. Bright and airy with crisp clean white cabinets, the kitchen is open and welcoming. Still crisp but gently contrasting, the stainless steel appliance add depth amid the white. To keep this kitchen warm, natural oak covers the floors and a toasted wheat color washes the walls. And then there is the architectural elements. You know. That post and beam in the middle of the room. It’s the center of attention. When you walk into a room your eyes roam around, establishing the size and shape of the room as your feet take you forward. From the front door of this home straight ahead you encountered this wall. The dining area to the right gives you a glimpse of things to come. Where there is a dining room you will usually find a kitchen. The architecture of years gone by consistently hides the kitchen, the heart of the home, behind walls. I sympathize with my Mom, and all the other Moms, who have had to spend so much time tucked into a tight kitchen, away from the family. This wall had to go, but it was structural. We needed its support but not its bulk. So we got rid of the bulk and only the bulk. Instead of a wall we have a post and beam, offering all of the structure we need. We could have installed a huge steel beam and reconfigure the joists to upset the beam, but why? The small beam and post add an incredible architectural element. It’s turning lemons into lemon, we simply made the most of what we had. It may be functional but it’s so fantastic. It looks like we created the effect just for the drama. The original kitchen may have had a working triangle and some counter space, but it was fairly small, with each area only a step or two away. The dark cabinets made the space feel even smaller and the butcher block patterned laminate counter tops were very dated. The appliances were feeling their age as well, from a coil burner electric stove to a top freezer refrigerator. To keep this kitchen within its space, a half wall separated it from the dining area. With the wall gone we borrowed some space from the living room and extended what was a U shaped kitchen into an L. At the living room window we start our new kitchen. We kept a small part of the wall to support the other end of our decorative beam. Sandwiched between a large pantry and our new French door refrigerator, the wall disappears. With our new open floor plan a sizable island was in order. We split our cooking areas and installed a continuous grill gas cooktop into the island. A sleek island hood takes care of exhaust and adds an extra element to our architectural feature. Under the cooktop we added over-sized drawers for pots and pan storage. The frameless cabinets from New River Cabinetry are maple, painted white, with the Herndon door style. With the cooktop safely nestled into our island, we still had to add an oven. We used the space where the old range sat for a large single oven of stainless steel and glass. If it worked for one, why not two? We created a home for a microwave in the wall cabinets. It’s perfect for heating leftovers so close to the refrigerator. An important consideration for hot spots in your kitchen is landing zones. Each of our cooking areas have generous landing zones, one on each side of the cooktop and an entire counter area above or below the ovens, depending on which one you’re using. We wanted to give the sink area more room so the half wall had to come out. We moved the trash and recycle cans into a cabinet, removed the heavy soffits and kept the sink under the window. With that little bit of extra space we were able to add a larger cabinet above the dishwasher and slide it all down. This used to be where the carpeting met the vinyl floor, but all of it is gone. Long oak planks eliminate that final divide between the kitchen and the dining area, while adding visual length to the area. White wall cabinets on each side of the window reflect the sunlight for a brighter view. With all of the darker cabinetry the backsplash walls had been painted white. Even still, there was a darkness in the corners and it wasn’t very exciting. We wanted to add visual interest and reflect the new under-cabinet lighting, eliminating the shadows in this corner. With 1″x 2″ Arabescato Honed marble mosaics and those under-cabinet lights, we achieved the perfect balance. The marble has subtle swirls in gray and beige on a clean white background, but with the honed finish the light is softly reflected instead of glaring. For granite, we chose the soft gray tones of Luna Pearl. The speckles of gray and beige are a gentle contrast to the white cabinets and emulate the color of the stainless steel. Between the carpet, red half wall, dark railing and dated light fixture, the dining area felt tired. Since the kitchen lacked sufficient storage, a large utility cabinet crowded the table space without adding any decorate elements. Although it didn’t get any bigger, our dining area feels fresher and more open too. With the oak flooring joining the area to the rest of our space and the toasted wheat on the walls, the white table and chairs compliment the cabinetry while contrasting the warmer colors. We replaced the chandelier with recessed lighting and changed that railing too. With our new open floor plan, we ended up with a fairly open area in between our foyer closet and the living room window. Not one to miss an opportunity, we filled the space with a multi-functional work space. With the sunlight streaming in this bright corner works for anything this family needs. There’s plenty of space for a chair under this large desk drawer. A closed cabinet below, glass doors above and lots of open shelving let you store and or showcase your belongings. We added a lite area at the top to keep away the darker corners. The transformation is complete. Elburn, IL three season sunroom, completed 2021. These homeowners had a simple set of steps off the back of the home. They wanted to better utilize the open back door by adding on a sunroom addition. We started with digging the trench for the foundation. The trench has to be quite deep in order to support the framing for this custom build sunroom. Next to the sunroom, we built out a concrete patio for entertaining.
