A set of brick and bluestone steps and landing that lead to the mudroom of this Warwick NY residence. The treads are constructed with a 2" thick rock faced bluestone. I used a custom color blended mortar for the brick joints, slightly rcessed. Below is a detail of the walkway. It is constructed with a weathered clay brick, bluestone borders and randomly placed bluestone inlays. The set of stps are softed with Rhododendron. The stones steps are local stone placed in such a way to make the climb and descent comfortable to traverse. Often natural stone steps have varying sized risers and treads that make their use difficult. We strive to make it not only beautiful but functional.

In the past this house had been at the heart of a busy farm. The function of the property has long since changed but it yet remains someone’s home. The challenge is to retrofit existing farm buildings, and the surrounding landscape, to better reflect both the different lifestyle and needs of the present owners. At the back of the farmhouse slopes have been modified to accommodate terraces, gardens and pathways linking through them. View sheds have been emphasized to showcase the property and the landscape filled with four seasons of interest. The geometry of the hard-scaping (walls, stairs, and walkways) is softened by the addition of lush plant material selected for both textural and colour qualities (evergreen, flowering and foliage). This view includes Smooth Viburnum (Viburnum nudum ‘Winterthur’), Purple Smokebush (Cotinus coggygria ‘Royal Purple’), Mellow Yellow Spiraea (Spiraea thunbergii ‘Ogon’), and Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia).

As shown in the Before Photo, existing steps constructed with pavers, were breaking and falling apart and the exterior steps became unsafe and unappealing. Complete demo and reconstruction of the Front Door Entry was the goal of the customer. Platinum Ponds & Landscaping met with the customer and discussed their goals and budget. We constructed the new steps provided by Unilock and built them to perfection into the existing patio area below. The next phase is to rebuild the patio below. The customers were thrilled with the outcome!
