In Andover, Massachusetts overlooking the Fish Brook Wetlands sits a custom-built contemporary home that connects the interior, landscaping and natural environment in the most intriguing ways. At the home’s front entrance and in the backyard, classic New England materials in a contemporary pattern complement materials used on the facade. Straightforward cedar shakes create a naturally beautiful, durable exterior that requires no painting or maintenance. This Sonoma County tasting room facelift uses inexpensive, “off-the-shelf” materials and straightforward design to reflect the Taft Street brand of “quality, everyday wine at a good value”. Having started in a garage, the owners wanted humble and approachable materials – so the space relies on plywood and rough framing lumber as finish materials. Concrete floors continue the industrial feel of the nearby production areas, while chalk-board black walls, gray and orange wool furnishings and cork stools make the space inviting and fun. Often, taking out a wall improves a space. In this case, it was adding one that made for an improvement in both style and function. On the one hand, it allowed for the possibility of a more elegant powder room by separating the stacked laundry pair. On the other, the wall provided a better access point for the laundry's drain and shut-off. A utility closet opposite the laundry pair (not shown) is hidden behind straightforward bi-fold doors for this hard working, multi-tasking space that still looks ready for company.

Belhaven is a new "walkable" village of charming beach houses located on the Oregon Coast. Its architecture is a simple, straightforward vernacular...using traditional elements and proportions to inspire beauty and compliment the natural habitat...photography by Duncan McRoberts.

The cabinet is the primary built feature in the master bedroom of the House on Lake Okoboji. Made from horizontally-laminated Baltic Birch plywood with veneer edges exposed, the front of the cabinet becomes a large headboard for the bed, facing the lake view. Studying the morphology of rippling water, we developed a computer animation of the water’s surface, optimized it for fabrication, and output code for a 3-axis cnc-router. Here, the uniqueness of the supple surface is contrasted by the repetitive horizontality of the veneer layers – a straightforward and manual application of material (stacking) contrasts the advanced computational technology of its formation. Fabricated in Omaha, Nebraska by Colley Furniture Studio.
