Several years ago, one couple began an extensive renovation of this East Denver home. The residence was originally designed by Victor Hornbein, a legendary local architect best known for his work (along with Ed White) on the Boettcher Memorial Tropical Conservatory at the Denver Botanic Gardens. The homeowner, himself an architect, spearheaded the project with the goal of staying true to Hornbein's original vision. Part of the two-year restoration included the addition of state-of-the-art appliances and lighting, and eventually the planning of the audio/video. Because the homeowners wanted to have the functionality of a first-rate home theater in a multipurpose room, ListenUp designed a setup featuring a wall-mounted 84-inch Sony 4K TV. The sleek Salamander credenza houses a McIntosh LCR80 center channel speaker, the top-of-the-line MX151 preamp/processor, an MC303 pwoer amp, and the MVP 891 universal disc player. The credenza is flanked by tow McIntosh XR100 speakers whose high-gloss finish mirrors that of the cabinet's smoked-glass doors. The surround channels are handled by two CS100 in-ceiling speakers, and three REL subwoofers deliver dramatic deep bass. This is truly a whole-house audio system, with 12 zones of audio throughout the home and outdoor areas. Family members can access their favorite music services and music stored on a local hard drive. A high-quality Pro-Ject turntable is even wired into the system. In the kitchen and some of the other first-floor rooms, the mid-century modern design is enhanced by custom wood and fabric grille covers for the architectural speakers. The pool area benefits from a Sonance outdoor system that employs strategically located speakers along with an underground subwoofer. Eclectic bedroom photo in Boston

Jacob Lilley Architects Location: Lexington, MA, USA A new garage, kids play room above and a mudroom met the need for more space. A renovated kitchen, bedroom and other living spaces created a refreshed sense of home. The strategic location of the mudroom as an intermediary connector solved problems with this 19th-century home siting seven feet above the ground with limited access to the rear yard. The connector between the garage and existing house is a stair that unifies the various levels and develops a strong connection to the yard. Photographed by: Eric Roth

Several walls were removed to open up the space, including a wall over stairs that had doors. Prior to the update, to access the basement, you would have to open a door and then climb down enclosed steps. You had no view of the basement until you got to the bottom of the steps, making the initial impression of the space feel uninviting. Now there are no doors and you can see into the basement from almost the top of the stairs. The addition of strategic, recessed lighting created a bright atmosphere without the worry of hitting one's head on any hanging light fixtures. While this is a great gathering space to entertain family and friends, it is also an ideal location for the kids to play. Therefore, the unfinished-looking chalkboard wall was not removed. Instead, a custom frame was added to provide an attractive accent to this special area of the room. The children love having the ability to express their creativity on this wall and so it has become a central family focal point of the space.

The custom made vessels and the accent tiles were the inspiration for this bathroom. These pieces were custom made by the artist, Samuel L. Hoffman, a potter, based on our specifications, color and inspiration. The detail on the front of the vessels represents the perfect wave to be out in the ocean surfing! My client wanted an ocean/sea feel for his master bathroom and blue was his color of choice. The crystals in the accent tiles, makes the perfect representation of the deep sea with a beautiful perfect dark blue to match the outside of the vessels. The rest of the materials were carefully chosen to help bring the sea feel to it - the rocks, the wood planks and the "sea salt" wall tile. Each accent tile was specifically placed to balance the bathroom. The sink wall was carefully tailored - we remove some of the white liners and inserted glass blue liners strategically to bring the blue to the wall without taking over the vessels. The shower has a trench drain without a curb to allow for a clean smooth shower floor. Bathroom has all the contemporary amenities my client was looking for! The use of thick white oak vertical and horizontal members strategically placed throughout the cabinetry provided an interesting inset appearance to otherwise strictly overlay faceframeless casework. During the cabinetry installation there was much fitting to be done to precisely match the conditions of the walls, ceilings and floor. It seems hard to believe, but this is even more difficult to do in smaller kitchens. All the same elements, just in a smaller space.
