Modern Row House For this new home in Boston’s oldest neighborhood, Flavin Architects imagined an elegant structure that capitalizes on the natural light and beautiful views abundant in Charlestown. Our firm sought to respect the historic fabric of the city while designing for the 21st century. The façade, with its projecting two-story bay, divided windows and vertical proportions respect the adjacent urban pattern. Stripped down and elegant detailing, devoid of ornament, connects the structure to today’s modern Boston. The exterior combines cedar shingles and shiplap boards with jet mist granite. This dark grey exterior contrasts with a bright white interior washed with sunlight. Each floor is accessed by a stairwell illuminated by a Wasco skylight. Sunlight pours down and refracts through glass paneling run underneath a natural wood handrail down the stairwell. The dining room and adjacent sitting room are bathed in warmth and light from a double-sided fireplace. In the dining room, floor-to-ceiling windows open to the street, and frame a view of the stained glass windows in St. Mary’s Church. Above the bedrooms and master suite on the third floor, a rooftop deck provides our client with views of Charlestown, Boston, and the Bunker Hill Monument.

This couple purchased a second home as a respite from city living. Living primarily in downtown Chicago the couple desired a place to connect with nature. The home is located on 80 acres and is situated far back on a wooded lot with a pond, pool and a detached rec room. The home includes four bedrooms and one bunkroom along with five full baths. The home was stripped down to the studs, a total gut. Linc modified the exterior and created a modern look by removing the balconies on the exterior, removing the roof overhang, adding vertical siding and painting the structure black. The garage was converted into a detached rec room and a new pool was added complete with outdoor shower, concrete pavers, ipe wood wall and a limestone surround. Inspiration for a timeless entryway remodel in DC Metro

The 10,000 sq. ft. Bellagio Residence was a 1939 Georgian Revival overlooking the manicured links of the Bel Air Country Club that was in need of a modern touch. Stripped down to the studs, Wearstler worked to create an additional 3,000 sq. ft. of living space, pushed up the ceiling heights, broadened windows and doors to allow more light and completely carved out a new master suite upstairs. Mixing the personalities of the clients, one slightly more conservative and focused on comfort, the other a little feistier that wanted something unique, Wearstler took a daredevil approach and created a high-chroma style that has become her new signature approach. Italian antiques, custom rugs inspired by silk scarves, hand-painted wallcoverings, bright hits of color like a tiger print Fuchsia velvet sofa against a plum colored pyramid studded wall and endless amounts of onyx and marble slab walls and floors make for an unapologetically lavish and seductive home. I Spy's mission, we gladly chose to accept was to create a space for sleeping, lounging, entertaining, an office & overnight guests in one small rented room. In short, a cohesive, yet compartmentalized place to live, work, play. This is part of a whole home remodel we completed and featured in the Home Builder's Association Showcase of Remodeled Homes. The tile flooring in the kitchen and dining room was removed and matching Brazillian Cherry wood flooring was tied into the existing. The flooring around the fireplace was also removed and replaced with tile that was used throughout the house, Galvano Charcoal porcelain tile, cut to 4"x12" and laid in a brick pattern. The fireplace was stripped down and rebuilt with Boral Ledge Platinum ledgestone and the hearth was rebuilt as a poured polished concrete in a light grey. The whole kitchen was taken down to nothing and rebuilt with Ikea Ramsjo cabinetry, Bianco Antiquo granite counters from Nature's Edge Stone Products, a butcher block counter for the upper edge of the island resting on a new half wall that was finished with white washed veneered plywood and trim to match the cabinets. New lighting and fans were selected by the homeowner from West Elm and Home Depot and the walls have all been painted Cobblestone or Painter's White. The ceiling texture was stripped and sanded and repainted white. The trim was one of the only things that was reused from the existing home, due to budget restrictions. Photo by Laura Cavendish
