While most people in town considered this building a "tear-down", the new homeowners wanted to revive the property with an ambitions renovation and addition project. Two major challenges needed to be overcome on this project: the first was preserving the integrity of the original 200 year old barn; the second was designing a complementary structure that would co-exist on the site without looking like a 21st century addition.
In order to achieve these goals, our team studied how farm buildings evolve on a site over time. Additions are usually constructed based on need and function. With this protocol in mind, a grain silo was designed to act as our entry tower and buffer the intersection of the two buildings. The silo acts as our focal point and allowed us to construct very simple buildings to house the balance of the owner’s program. The team paid very close attention to scale, use of materials (many of which were recycled) and developed a vocabulary of modern interior detailing that would complement the original house.
Specific program requirements for the project included: large entertainment spaces, gourmet kitchen with adjacent family room, a squash court, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, master suite, and plenty of storage space. In addition, since both adults work from home and receive clients in their offices, two offices needed to be created and it was critical to separate the work areas for the more private family spaces. The new silo, with central stair, became the element that allowed these different program needs to coexist effectively.

Toronto Bathroom Features
White shaker vanity – semi-custom with solid Maple doors and plywood structure, dovetail drawers
Quartz counters
In-floor heating with programmable Thermostat.
Separate tub and shower area – we opened up a wall and moved plumbing around to accommodate a good-sized shower area.

This is a recently completed entertainment center in a family room in Greensboro. This installation is 18-1/2 feet wide x 8 feet high. The base consists of two cabinets with deep drawers that move on full-extension ball-bearing slides featuring soft self-closing, plus a long center cabinet with three door compartments that have adjustable shelves and soft-close door hinges. The upper structure consists of two 5-1/2" wide cabinets with fixed shelves, a 90-inch long top bridge between them, back panels to conceal the old wall paneling, Shaker trim for the center section, floating crown molding across the entire top span, and programmable COB LED lighting above the crown that is controlled by either a wireless remote or a smartphone app.

The entire backyard is illuminated with a LED lighting system that brings all the important elements to life after dark. Lighting for the pool and sheer descent waterfalls can be programmed to display a myriad of colours. A sculptural stainless steel railing adds interest at the pool’s entry steps.

This project is an example of our staged building program, with phase one marking the completion of the sunroom and deck. Phase two is to include a hot tub deck that leads into a paver patio with a custom fire pit (this will be completed at the homeowner’s discretion). Thus far, the completed space includes a rustic open gable sunroom built with select rough hewn cedar and a custom adjoining deck.

The program consists of a detached Guest House with full Kitchen, Living and Dining amenities, Carport and Office Building with attached Main house and Master Bedroom wing. The arrangement of buildings was dictated by the numerous majestic oaks and organized as a procession of spaces leading from the Entry arbor up to the front door. Large covered terraces and arbors were used to extend the interior living spaces out onto the site.
All the buildings are clad in Texas limestone with accent bands of Leuders limestone to mimic the local limestone cliffs in the area. Steel was used on the arbors and fences and left to rust. Vertical grain Douglas fir was used on the interior while flagstone and stained concrete floors were used throughout. The flagstone floors extend from the exterior entry arbors into the interior of the Main Living space and out onto the Main house terraces.

The project involved a large program that would yield a massive home on a limited and restricted site. The design strategy involved deconstructing the volume into pavilions that could generate a dialogue between built form and landscape and create intimate connections between the golf course and the living spaces.

Initial programming revolved around the disconnect between parking, kitchen, upper entertaining spaces, and the pool.
Accessibility was solved through the installation of the new multi-tiered, limestone balustrade lined, staircase in place of a previously disregarded space.
Additional hardscape features included a sunken fire pit, tiered fountain and multiple entertaining spaces to accommodate all needs. Plantings focused on providing structure to the space and bringing down the scale of the house. The highlights of larger Hydrangea and Arborvitae, added screening and privacy at the perimeter while utilization of evergreens bring interest to a space that allows nearly year round use. Lastly, heavy annual planting areas within the pool deck area give year-round interest to help draw people through the space.

After dark this pool and backyard with outdoor kitchen comes to life with a LED lighting system. It can be programmed to illuminate the pool and sheer descent waterfalls in a myriad of colours. The view is quite dramatic from indoors when viewed from the large living room windows. (18 x 42 custom rectangular)

Example of a trendy bedroom design in Boston

This project was a complete tear down and rebuild on a very small, waterfront lot. Zoning, civil engineering of the septic system, and structural engineering for flooding and hurricane resistance were all driving factors, but the final design was nothing short of simple eloquence.
The program was for a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 3 season house that made the most of the Long Island Sound waterfront exposure. The footprint is basically 24 ft x 24 ft, the same as a two car garage. Despite being a cube more or less, all the rooms that matter front on the water side. The stairs, baths and circulation back up to the street side. Total gross living space is just under 1,200 sq. ft.
