The owners were interviewing design-build firms, and Custom Builder and AIBD Building Designer Ron Parker and ASID Interior Designer Lila Parker connected with this special couple on their first appointment. The couple was recently married and both had survived the loss of their spouse in years past. Ron and Lila accepted this as a very special opportunity to fulfill the owner’s dreams for this home through taking a fresh and very unique approach to this amazing residence and property. The incredible home was originally designed and built by the husband for his family. Ron and Lila understood the importance of honoring and respecting the significance of these memories. The wife had a beautifully restored home on White Rock Lake and desired for the design and feel of her existing home to be incorporated with the architecture and style of this home to be renovated. The Parker’s design / build team embraced this tremendous opportunity and were awarded the contracts for design and construction. Additions were created to expand the Kitchen and Dining Area overlooking the lake. A beautiful European style kitchen was designed to include flush inset and stained cabinets; quartz counters with a “waterfall effect” at the island and serving bar; significant cabinet and storage details; large and expansive Andersen Windows and Patio Doors, custom wood beams, and oversized porcelain tile flooring. The Family Area was redesigned with a custom entertainment center and new Andersen Doors and Windows. Other remodeling and interior design upgrades were completed in the home including converting the existing Dining Room and Butler’s Pantry into a Library and Reading Area, and remodeling the Powder Room to include a free-standing contemporary vanity. Changes and upgrades were also made to the Study and Master Bath. A large patio was built with stone retaining walls, borders, planters, and steps leading to the beautifully terraced yard. This project also included a quaint and refreshing detached Art Room addition with cathedral ceiling, nestled in the trees overlooking the lake. A new two-car garage addition with storage closets was also added to the existing garage. Due to the proximately of these additions to the lake, special permission and critical guidelines were required by the Corps of Engineers and local city building authorities. These legal requirements created design, engineering, and building challenges which were approved and completed as required. Ron and Lila Parker and the Fred Parker Company Design / Build Team are extremely proud of the work that was achieved to redesign, renovate, and update this amazing estate for this fine couple and their families. Ron’s personal mission statement “To meet or exceed the client’s expectations and end with a good relationship” was certainly tested but he believes this was respectively achieved as indicated by the client’s eloquent “Five-Star Houzz Review”.

RESIDENCE FOR Mr PRADEEP JAIN Location: Sector 28, Chandigarh Year of Construction : 2005 So the old sewage connection was retained..........basically to save oneself from harassment from the sharks in the various departments connected with house sanction, and concomitant procedures. The plot was a large one – upwards of around 1500 sq yds. - which could qualify locally as a 3 kanal house. (1 kanal = 1/8 of an acre = 4840/8=605 sq yds.) We’ll not get into the travails of getting the plot transferred to oneself, and the subsequent sanction of the building plans – but it was relatively easy compared to the norm – thanx to a dynamic young AEO in the Estate Office. Since the Owner was based in Ambala, the plans for the house were relatively simple – considering that the construction firm was based out of Meerut........!!! So the program was for the house to be born out of 9 squares of around 16’ side each, (the traditional Vastu Purusha Mandala) with an additional 8’ wide wrap around space where needed – ie the SE, the SW and the NW sides. While the SW side had an insulating wrap of walk-in closets and toilets, the SE and the NW sides had a verandah – with suitable pop-outs of study-rooms, etc. to shade the glazing from the low East and West sun. The central square was designed like an atrium, with an attic above, just under the peak of the pyramidal roof topping the house. To allow for an unique character – this pyramid was clad in terracotta tiles. As the sketch of the plan shows – there is a square each for the entrance lobby, the living room, and the kitchen. The lobby has a powder room attached on the left, behind which is the kitchen. On the right, and opening onto a huge garden at the rear (NW) is the large living room – occupying 1.5 squares of space. And there is a 8’ wide verandah insulating this living room from the rear garden. Although packed with flowers from the Potted Plant Committee........... The central Atrium is the Dining room – with suitable storage all around for crockery and other decorative memorabilia.......and leading onto another family seating (the TV area) between the 3 bedrooms adjoining this atrium. The staircase to the FF is just SW of this lounge, with a hobby room or tool room (the owner is an engineer who loves to tinker) as is the exit to the SW garden. As aforesaid – the SW side of the house is insulated from the afternoon sun with a set of toilets and walk-in closets. On both floors. From the FF one can look down and communicate with the GF easily, leading to a great feeling of space. The FF also has additional rooms used as a gym, and games room, while a large deck is left open as a verandah of the NE side. If a 70’ long x 17’ wide space plus more seems reasonable. - instead of large. Well, there you are – supposed to be impressed with all those large spaces – which is what the house was supposed to do to the visitor in the first place.......!!!!

The owners purchased the property as a retirement investment with the goal of relocating from the East Coast to live in one of the new homes and sell the other two. The original home - designed by the distinguished architectural firm of Edwards & Plunkett in the 1930's - underwent a complete remodel both inside and out. While respecting the original architecture, this 2,089 sq. ft., two bedroom, two bath home features new interior and exterior finishes, reclaimed wood ceilings, custom light fixtures, stained glass windows, and a new three-car garage. The two new homes on the lot reflect the style of the original home, only grander. Neighborhood design standards required Spanish Colonial details – classic red tile roofs and stucco exteriors. REGIONAL + URBAN DESIGN: Honor Award PROJECT: Upper Lawrenceville Community Visioning CLIENT: Lawrenceville Corporation, Matt Galluzo, Executive Director ARCHITECTURE FIRM: evolveEA DESCRIPTION: This Strategy Study was the first significant planning effort dedicated solely to Upper Lawrenceville, or the 10th Ward. Through a series of community charrettes, a neighborhood identity was created, along with a series of principles that would help prioritize future development to suit the community’s long term livability goals. Three themes were established – Upper Lawrenceville as an affordable and authentic place to live, a place where people make (and grow) things, and recreational amenities that attract visitors who are inclined to stay as residents – and from those themes, six programs were identified that would be essential to create a place where people wanted to live, work, and play. JURY COMMENTS: This study is a really comprehensive look at the existing residential fabric with a strong point of view towards handling growth. It is very well presented, attuned to the existing scale, and very sensitive to the needs of existing residents.

JDBG is wrapping up work on an expansive 2-story sunroom addition that also included modifications to the existing home’s interior and significant exterior improvements as well. The original project brief was to provide a conditioned 4-season sunroom addition where the homeowners could relax and enjoy their wooded views. As we delved deeper into our client’s overall objectives, it became clear that this would be no ordinary sunroom addition. The resulting 16’x25’ sunroom is a showstopper with 10’ high ceilings and wall to wall windows offering expansive views of the surrounding landscape. As we recommend with most addition projects, the process started with our Preliminary Design Study to determine project goals, design concepts, project feasibility and associated budget estimates. During this process, our design team worked to ensure that both interior and exterior were fully integrated. We conducted in-depth programming to identify key goals and needs which would inform the design and performed a field survey and zoning analysis to identify any constraints that could impact the plans. The next step was to develop conceptual designs that addressed the program requirements. Using a combination of 3-D massing, interior/exterior renderings, precedent imaging and space planning, the design concept was revised and refined. At the end of the study we had an approved schematic design and comprehensive budget estimates for the 2-story addition and were ready to move into design development, construction documentation, trade coordination, and final pricing. A complex project such as this involves architectural and interior design, structural and civil engineering, landscape design and environmental considerations. Multiple trades and subs are engaged during construction, from HVAC to electrical and plumbing, framers, carpenters and masons, roofers and painters just to name a few. JDBG was there every step of the way to ensure quality construction. Other notable features of the renovation included expanding the home’s existing dining room, incorporating a custom ‘dish room,’ and providing fully conditioned storage and his & her workrooms on the lower level. A new front portico will visually connect the old and new structures and a brand new roof, shutters and paint will further transform the exterior. Thoughtful planning was also given to the landscape, including a back deck, stone patio and walkways, plantings and exterior lighting.
