VILLA D'ORO Stone Mosaic Villa d’Oro is a stunning collection of stone mosaic and intarsia patterns inspired by the artistic heritage of the countless cultures that have called the Mediterranean home. In Villa d’Oro, decorative influences from Moorish Spain mingle with Venetian Gothic and Medieval Egyptian, echoing the mélange created by the eons of cultural overlap in the ancient Mediterranean world. Working from historical sources, we stripped each design down to its graphic essence and then rebuilt it in contemporary color ways and scale, keeping in mind how people use patterns today. Each pattern in Villa d’Oro is carefully cut and assembled from stones fittingly sourced in a variety of Mediterranean countries, creating new decorative art to enliven your modern surroundings. The tectonic events that produced the specific topography of the site, trajectories of water runoff, wind movement, soil composition, and effects of plant and animal species on the landscape have converged to create the conditions of the site chosen for the Center. Each of these factors have in turn been subject to the impact of human inhabitation and vernacular building practices, amplified in recent generations to a harmful degree by shortsighted agricultural strategies and their associated effects of overgrazing, water over-manipulation and erosion. Fundamental to the architectural response is the premise that the human species is an inherent part of the conditions that comprise and affect the landscape. The significance of the Center, enhanced and informed by the activities that occur within and as an extension of it, lies in the co-dependence of the Center and the ecosystem as inherently bound entities. The architecture of the Center is intended to make evident the natural processes of the Karoo and establish a new precedent for building within and through an ecosystem defined by dynamic flux.

On this coastal site subject to high winds and flooding, governmental review and permitting authorities overlap and combine to create some pret-ty tough weather of their own. On the relatively small footprint available for construction, this house was stacked in functional layers: Entry and kids' spaces are on the ground level. The Master Suite is tucked under the eaves (pried-open to distant views) on the third floor, and the middle level is wide-open from outside wall to outside wall for entertaining and sweeping views.

The garden borders a natural reserve, and the whole area’s character is determined by beech and birch forests and heaths. The design was chosen to define a garden that is not subject to time and trends. The sleek lines come into a beautiful contrast with the natural shapes of the edges of the woodland. The slopes of ornamental grasses are a reference to the lush moors of the surrounding fields. The most logical place for the pool would have been right next to the house, but as a landscape designer, I chose to place the swimming pool deep in the garden. This totally changes the perception of the garden as a whole. By making a path to somewhere, you amplify the emotion that place rouses. The pool and the bathhouse* are now amongst the planes of ornamental grasses, next to the edge of the woodland. As a result, you get to feel as part of nature. Strong horizontal lines tune in the proportions of the house with the proportions of the garden and landscape. Thus, the garden is continued in its surroundings and makes use of the horizontal lines to anchor itself into the area. *The concept of the swimming pool and bathhouse design was developed in collaboration with BOS architects.

The luxury details found in this kitchen remodel include Precision custom cabinetry finished in 'Swiss Coffee’, a perimeter countertop made out of a porcelain slab by Dekton from the Stonika Collection—color ‘Sogne’; and a contrasting island countertop made of polished Nevaska Granite, with a thicker 2-½” full bullnose edge. The full height backsplash is a honed Carrara Marble tile, 4”x12”, installed in a brick pattern. Note: Porcelain is a durable man-made stone that resembles natural marble or granite. It's an excellent option for kitchens, as it has heat resistant properties like natural stone. Other man-made materials like Quartz have resin components that limit the heat you can subject them to. Other features included new high-end appliances, a wine refrigerator and engineered wood flooring throughout.

Pioneer real thin stone veneer from the Quarry Mill creates a stunning exterior wainscoting to give character to this building. Pioneer is a natural hand-picked fieldstone that is sawed into thin stone veneer. The stone has neutral and pleasing earth tones with a soft and natural texture. Pioneer showcases the fieldstone in its completely natural state with irregular shapes. Some fieldstones are split with a hydraulic press to form ashlar, ledgestone, or castle rock style stones, whereas, Pioneer is unaltered and forms a mosaic style. Pioneer is subject to greater variation due to being a fieldstone product. This variation adds character and beauty to the unique look of Pioneer. The individual pieces give flexibility to the mason over the final appearance as the stone can be laid in a more linear fashion if desired.
