Fiorito Interior DesignFinding a home is not easy in a seller’s market, but when my clients discovered one—even though it needed a bit of work—in a beautiful area of the Santa Cruz Mountains, they decided to jump in. Surrounded by old-growth redwood trees and a sense of old-time history, the house’s location informed the design brief for their desired remodel work. Yet I needed to balance this with my client’s preference for clean-lined, modern style.
Suffering from a previous remodel, the galley-like bathroom in the master suite was long and dank. My clients were willing to completely redesign the layout of the suite, so the bathroom became the walk-in closet. We borrowed space from the bedroom to create a new, larger master bathroom which now includes a separate tub and shower.
The look of the room nods to nature with organic elements like a pebbled shower floor and vertical accent tiles of honed green slate. A custom vanity of blue weathered wood and a ceiling that recalls the look of pressed tin evoke a time long ago when people settled this mountain region. At the same time, the hardware in the room looks to the future with sleek, modular shapes in a chic matte black finish. Harmonious, serene, with personality: just what my clients wanted.

The Renowned GroupThe Master Bath needed some updates as it suffered from an out of date, extra large tub, a very small shower and only one sink. Keeping with the Mood, a new larger vanity was added in a beautiful dark green with two sinks and ample drawer space, finished with gold framed mirrors and two glamorous gold leaf sconces. Taking in a small linen closet allowed for more room at the shower which is enclosed by a dramatic black framed door. Also, the old tub was replaced with a new alluring freestanding tub surrounded by beautiful marble tiles in a large format that sits under a deco glam chandelier. All warmed by the use of gold fixtures and hardware.

Michael Gorski ArchitectThe original 1920’s cottage was charming, but suffered from a series of additions that marred the exterior and created an awkward floor plan. To renovate this home, the exterior of the original cottage was left largely intact, the previous additions were removed, a garage/bedroom wing was added to the rear, and a glazed breakfast room was added where old and new construction meet. Within the original cottage, several partitions were removed and openings between rooms were widened. The resulting home maintains the intimate feel of the original cottage, while creating the light and airy interior desired by the owner.

The new residence combines original materials such as the wide plank subfloors discovered beneath warped and rotted parquet with new insertions like the parlor floor steel structure and barn door. Energy conservation modifications including a fluid applied air barrier, continuous exterior wall insulation and a pair of compact boilers are hidden behind new interior finishes. Sprinkled throughout the house are rescued elements ranging from door knobs to a claw foot tub with a fresh coat of bright green paint.

Horn & Co. (Previously JHLA)The existing concrete aggregate terrace suffered from disrepair and access was limited from the rear of the Bethesda home. We were tasked with replacing all paving, coping, and stairs. An improved water feature behind the original kidney-shaped pool provided white noise to distract visitors from the nearby highway noise.

Thompson Builders IncThis South Shore home suffered major damage from snow and melting ice dams. To make way for demolition and repairs, the interior had to be completely emptied and the family moved to temporary housing. Extensive work was needed on all three floors, including complete demolition and reconstruction of the kitchen, extensive work to the entrance hall, a new roof, re-insulation, reworking of heating and mechanical systems and replacement of hardwood floors.
