Seeking a personal retreat by the Atlantic coast, our client found a new home in Lisbon, overlooking the water. The centuries-old building had been revived by a local architect some years prior, preserving its elegant historical features while updating the structures and fixtures. Our team uplifted the interior with new finishes, and furnished it with a refined composition of walnut and slender black metalwork, softened by cream and anthracite fabrics that recall the architectural stonework. The outcome aspires to an understated, welcoming warmth, while maintaining a bright, graceful interior suitable to the airy views. The living area revolves around a locally-designed travertine coffee table, situated in conversational balance by sofas that appear suspended just beneath the horizon. The arrangement seamlessly blends with the porous stone hearth, set upon a hand-tufted New Zealand wool rug. A walnut dining set bestows a Scandinavian dualism: elegance for formal dinners, yet sturdy practicality for quick meals. Beyond, an Italian-made buffet also serves as a media cabinet. Marble consoles punctuate the river view, their frames complementing the slender rods of the ceiling fixtures. Handmade in Portugal, the sleeping setups feature beds with textured upholstery upon joinery, matching walnut and marble nightstands, light linens, and contrasting woven bedside rugs. Iconic bedside lamps with thin black metal supports finish the scene.

: This kitchen required a major remodel. The existing space was as unattractive as it was nonfunctional. Old non-working appliances, a dead-end space with no flow to adjacent rooms, poor lighting, and a sewer line running through the middle of the cabinets. Instead of being a haven for this working couple and extended family, the space was a nightmare. The designer was retained to create spaces for family gatherings to enjoy cooking and baking, provide storage for daily needs as well as bulk good storage and allow the kitchen to be the center piece of the home with improved access and flow throughout. Additions to the Wishlist were a mud room, laundry (not in the garage) and a place for the cats. A small addition created enough room to accommodate an island/peninsula layout suitable for baking and casual eating, a large range, generous storage both below and above the countertop. A full-size microwave convection oven built into the island provides additional baking capacity. Dish storage is in a customized drawer to make access easier for the petite client. A large framed pantry for food and essentials is located next to the island/peninsula. The old closet which contained the water meter and shut off valves now provides storage for brooms, vacuum cleaners, cleaning supplies and bulk goods. The ceiling heights in the entire home were low so in the addition a vaulted ceiling aligning with adjacent sunroom visually opened the room. This reimagined room is now the heart of the home.

Joey desired a spacious and functional kitchen suitable for cooking and entertaining. He envisioned an open layout with ample seating around an enlarged island, improved storage, and a dedicated pantry. To fulfill this vision, significant changes were made to the existing kitchen layout. The original island was replaced with a larger, dual-sided island featuring white shaker cabinets and a matching granite/quartz countertop. An 80-inch countertop overhang was installed, supported by sturdy legs and brackets, providing additional seating space. A pantry was seamlessly added into the adjacent office space, complete with new framing, drywall, texture, and pocket doors for easy access. Contemporary pendant lights illuminate the expanded island and dining areas, while recessed lighting enhances pantry visibility. Sleek floating shelves were added for extra storage and visual interest. Matching luxury vinyl plank flooring was installed in impacted areas to maintain consistency and elegance. This remodel exceeded expectations, resulting in an inviting and cohesive kitchen space. Thoughtful integration of storage, contemporary elements, and an expanded layout has greatly enhanced both functionality and appearance.

This inviting kitchen has a truly transitional feel with a combination of contemporary and traditional elements, clean lines and lots of natural light. It was designed it was designed to be more suitable to cooking and modern appliances.

The owners of this mid-century cottage by the beach wanted to retain a mid-century feel without overdoing the period style. The old design was crowded and confusing, offering very little workspace for cooking. To resolve this problem, we eliminated the wall ovens and the angled pantry, installing a 30″ Wolf range and significantly clearing the wall for counter space. A stout chimney hood, flanked with 2 sets of floating shelves created a focal point. This was further punctuated by a water-green tile, suitable for both the beachy feel and the mid-century vibe. The island was enlarged slightly and made more functional with sets of deep drawers placed at either end. Omega maple cabinets with slab doors offered simplicity, furthering the mid-century appeal. Though very little construction was called for in this project, we reduced the size of the fridge wall, opening the kitchen to the family room. A simple fireplace makeover finished off the design, bringing the two spaces together. As this small kitchen was intimately connected to the back yard, we chose a color scheme that would connect the indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a sense of harmony and enhanced spaciousness.

This modern farmhouse is a complete custom renovation to transform an existing rural Duncan house into a home that was suitable for our clients’ growing family and lifestyle. The original farmhouse was too small and dark. The layout for this house was also ineffective for a family with parents who work from home. The new design was carefully done to meet the clients’ needs. As a result, the layout of the home was completely flipped. The kitchen was switched to the opposite corner of the house from its original location. In addition, Made to Last constructed multiple additions to increase the size. An important feature to the design was to capture the surrounding views of the Cowichan Valley countryside with strategically placed windows.

We love this rustic-modern Houston patio addition with an outdoor kitchen and double pergola! It not only made the most of a long, narrow space while satisfying strict homeowners association rules, but did so affordably in a warm, timeless style. “The client really enjoys outdoor living, but had a specific budget they wanted to meet,” explains Outdoor Homescapes owner Wayne Franks. “They also live on a golf course and had to meet particular HOA requirements.” The HOA requirements restricted how far back the new 450-square-foot patio and pergola could extend back into the yard. The HOA also wanted to make sure the patio’s colors and materials matched the existing home and others around it. “We chose colors and materials that offered texture and character, but that would go with just about anything around it,” says Wayne. “We found what we were looking for in the Fantastico travertine and Austin limestone – two materials clients love and just can’t go wrong with.” The Austin limestone facing the 8-foot-square, L-shaped kitchen island is dry-stacked in a castle pattern for a naturalistic, rustic look. Yet its light, neutral color keeps the style fresh and modern. Adding to the modern look are the stainless steel appliances: an RCS 30-inch stainless steel grill, double burner and outdoor fridge. Even though the finishes on the sink and light fixtures (Hunter pendant lamps and Hampton Bay light/fan combos) have a different finish – oil-rubbed-bronze – this actually follows the recent trend of mixing different metals, materials and finishes. “The look’s not so matchy-matchy anymore,” explains Wayne. “Mixing it up makes it look more authentic and personalized.” That’s why backsplashes like the one in this project – done in glass and metal mosaic – are also becoming more popular than traditional ceramic tile. Another recent trend can be seen here, too – an amping up of color variation and texture. “In addition to the split-face texture of the rock, you can definitely see the bold color variation in the travertine,” says Wayne. The flooring is a Fantastico travertine, laid out in a Versailles pattern. “The Fantastico tile is killer,” says Wayne. “The warm reds go great with red brick, which we have a lot of around here.” The countertop with the rounded, raised bar at the end is English walnut travertine. The red bar stools also add a pop of exciting color that contrasts nicely with the greenery around the patio. The double pergola, continues Wayne, is No. 2 pine stained a Minwax honey-gold. One side of the pergola – the side over the seating area – is covered with Lexan, a clear material that keeps out rain, heat and UV rays. The pergola also juts further into the yard on that side. “It’s called a scallop, and it just lends some visual interest,” explains Wayne. “It prevents the pergola from just looking like one big rectangular hunk of wood.” Wayne particularly likes how everything blended so well with the brick – which was a big concern – yet didn’t come off as too neutral or boring. “The Fantastico travertine and red chairs do an excellent job of pulling the red from the brick and working with the warmth of that color to make a super-inviting space,” says Wayne. “We’re really pleased with how it all ties together so well.”
