This site underwent a dramatic transformation from a casual outdoor afterthought to a well-defined, functional, and beautiful space. The front entry was redirected and opened, and features the porch and landing. The raised garden beds line the entire space creating rooms and directional flow. Layers of white and green plant materials fill the beds, while taller specimens create private spaces. Photo Credit: Linda Oyama Bryan

This project involved the design of a gunite swimming pool, adjacent stone patio & ornamental plantings. The clients desired a formal pool area that would reflect the character of their home. The project posed many challenges as the pool design not only had to fit into the existing landscape but also within numerous site & wetland setbacks. The design uses dimensionally patterned bluestone for the patio & coping to surround the 18' x 38' gunite swimming pool. An array of colorful planting envelop the surrounding landscape, cascading in washes of purple, white & green. Though the pool area is only going to be used during the warm summer months the planting plan was created such that there are peaks of interest through the entire space, all year long. The pool itself was designed with a state of the art filtration system, which uses salt to treat the pool water, rather than harsh chemicals. The outdoor space creates an elegant retreat in the client’s backyard that resembles a Nantucket oasis.

This decomposed granite patio was added just east of the entrance to the front porch and planted with layers of shrubs and trees to provide privacy and enclosure. The property is surrounded by a custom handmade steel rebar fence.

Sun-loving perennials such as 'Kobold' liatris, 'Skyracer' molinia, 'Feuerland' achillea, and 'Full Moon' coreopsis bring color and texture to the edge of the patio, while acting as a screen from the neighbors.

A vintage marble table provides a divider between the two sitting areas. The striking color and texture creates a focal point between the two spaces. It picks up on the hints of red and pink throughout both sides bringing those pieces together.

This unique garden edging is long-lasting and low maintenance. COR-TEN steel edging is designed to weather over time. When it is initially installed the edging looks like regular galvanized steel, but overtime a thin layer of rust gives the garden a rustic, but modern look. Short dome textured architectural bronze path light by Kichler is ideal for use in lower planting and smaller garden areas.

This is an example of a mid-sized transitional full sun backyard garden path in Chicago for summer.

Collaborated on project development from design and permitting to installation in 2014. Over 10 years, we’ve maintained close communication with the owners and their maintenance provider, RP Marzilli to ensure the landscape is kept in top condition. The sloping yard allowed us to create a stunning infinity-edge pool, while the large evergreen plantings provide privacy and edge habitat. New England stone walls and mature tree layers beautifully integrate the house with the surrounding landscape. Angela Kearney, Minglewood, LLC

Sun, sand, surf, and some homosexuality. Welcome to Ptown! Our home is inspired by summer breezes, local flair, and a passion for togetherness. This active family with two young boys wanted a place to grow food, lounge in the front yard with friends and have blooms upon blooms of midwestern flowers to enjoy. Custom tuteurs, vegetable beds and benches frame the center of the garden, surrounded by low maintenance flowering shrubs, trees and perennials. Evergreen grasses form the understory of the borders.
