Mid-Century Remodel on Tabor Hill This sensitively sited house was designed by Robert Coolidge, a renowned architect and grandson of President Calvin Coolidge. The house features a symmetrical gable roof and beautiful floor to ceiling glass facing due south, smartly oriented for passive solar heating. Situated on a steep lot, the house is primarily a single story that steps down to a family room. This lower level opens to a New England exterior. Our goals for this project were to maintain the integrity of the original design while creating more modern spaces. Our design team worked to envision what Coolidge himself might have designed if he'd had access to modern materials and fixtures. With the aim of creating a signature space that ties together the living, dining, and kitchen areas, we designed a variation on the 1950's "floating kitchen." In this inviting assembly, the kitchen is located away from exterior walls, which allows views from the floor-to-ceiling glass to remain uninterrupted by cabinetry. We updated rooms throughout the house; installing modern features that pay homage to the fine, sleek lines of the original design. Finally, we opened the family room to a terrace featuring a fire pit. Since a hallmark of our design is the diminishment of the hard line between interior and exterior, we were especially pleased for the opportunity to update this classic work.

APD was hired to update the primary bathroom and laundry room of this ranch style family home. Included was a request to add a powder bathroom where one previously did not exist to help ease the chaos for the young family. The design team took a little space here and a little space there, coming up with a reconfigured layout including an enlarged primary bathroom with large walk-in shower, a jewel box powder bath, and a refreshed laundry room including a dog bath for the family’s four legged member!

The Design Styles Architecture team beautifully remodeled the exterior and interior of this Carolina Circle home. The home was originally built in 1973 and was 5,860 SF; the remodel added 1,000 SF to the total under air square-footage. The exterior of the home was revamped to take your typical Mediterranean house with yellow exterior paint and red Spanish style roof and update it to a sleek exterior with gray roof, dark brown trim, and light cream walls. Additions were done to the home to provide more square footage under roof and more room for entertaining. The master bathroom was pushed out several feet to create a spacious marbled master en-suite with walk in shower, standing tub, walk in closets, and vanity spaces. A balcony was created to extend off of the second story of the home, creating a covered lanai and outdoor kitchen on the first floor. Ornamental columns and wrought iron details inside the home were removed or updated to create a clean and sophisticated interior. The master bedroom took the existing beam support for the ceiling and reworked it to create a visually stunning ceiling feature complete with up-lighting and hanging chandelier creating a warm glow and ambiance to the space. An existing second story outdoor balcony was converted and tied in to the under air square footage of the home, and is now used as a workout room that overlooks the ocean. For this project, the initial inspiration for our clients came from seeing a modern industrial design featuring barnwood and metals in our showroom. Once our clients saw this, we were commissioned to completely renovate their outdated and dysfunctional kitchen and our in-house design team came up with this new space that incorporated old world aesthetics with modern farmhouse functions and sensibilities.
