Hot and Cold. We stained the staircase dark chocolate and installed a surged white wool runner so the owners aging dog could navigate the stairs safely. The contrasts are amazing and elegant: light and dark, warm and cool, and square and round. 123-Floor Inc.

Vibrant color was used to inspire energy in some rooms, while peaceful watery tones were used in others to evoke calm and tranquility. The master bathroom color pallet and overall aesthetic was designed to be reminiscent of suite bathrooms at the Trump Towers in Chicago. Materials, patterns and textures are all simple and clean in keeping with the scale and openness of the rest of the home. While detail and interest was added with hardware, accessories and lighting by incorporating shine and sparkle with masculine flair.

We had designed the Plantation Animal Hospital for Dr. Isom 20 years earlier. He loved the Florida Keys and he loved fishing, and was gradually turning responsibility for his practice over to his younger associates. His first impulse was for what he referred to as a "fishing shack" built mostly of wood. However, Hurricane Andrew struck South Florida during the design process, which was very sobering, and concrete became the wiser choice. Only the roof remained a wood heavy timber structure. Coastal codes there required elevating the living areas above hurricane tidal surge, so the idea was to locate the concrete columns on the outside and extending up to visually support only the roof, thereby lending a lighter, more graceful feeling to the heavy concrete part of the structure. Windows are dual jalousies with external wood slats for sun shading, privacy and security. The site was landscaped with local salt friendly plant material.

This shot looks toward the back yard from the old living room. The removal of the load-bearing wall made a 15x26 room with two spacious seating areas - one for conversation and the other for watching TV and enjoying the wooded back yard. Marvin patio door has 2 fixed and one operating door to provide access to patio and back garden. The old bedroom closet became the built-in media center with specialized wiring for cable tv, telephone, and surge-protected outlets to protect electronics and audio equipment. The MITSUBISHI television, hidden in its custom built cabinet by MIDDLE ATLANTIC RACKS when not in use, is raised with the touch of a button by an AUTON motorized lift. Equipment includes an amplified CD player by NAD, a SONY blu-ray disc player, an IPOD dock, and SNELL acoustic speakers. Lighting and shade control for the room are provided by LUTRON.
