Bigfork Mountain Residence is a Scandinavian-inspired timber home designed for modern mountain living in natural environments. The project combines engineered timber construction, panoramic glazing, warm wood interiors, and clean architectural lines to create a durable and highly comfortable retreat integrated with the surrounding landscape. Designed with a focus on simplicity, natural materials, and indoor-outdoor connection, the residence features exposed timber structure, expansive living spaces, energy-efficient systems, and carefully detailed modern interiors. The home reflects NORD Wood House’s approach to contemporary mountain architecture — combining Scandinavian aesthetics, precision-crafted timber systems, and construction solutions tailored for demanding climates.

The Owners of a home that had been consumed by the moving dunes of Lake Michigan wanted a home that would not only stand the test of aesthetic time, but survive the vicissitudes of the environment. With the assistance of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality as well as the consulting civil engineer and the City of Grand Haven Zoning Department, a soil stabilization site plan was developed based on raising the new home’s main floor elevation by almost three feet, implementing erosion studies, screen walls and planting indigenous, drought tolerant xeriscaping. The screen walls, as well as the low profile of the home and the use of sand trapping marrum beachgrass all help to create a wind shadow buffer around the home and reduce blowing sand erosion and accretion. The Owners wanted to minimize the stylistic baggage which consumes most “cottage” residences, and with the Architect created a home with simple lines focused on the view and the natural environment. Sustainable energy requirements on a budget directed the design decisions regarding the SIPs panel insulation, energy systems, roof shading, other insulation systems, lighting and detailing. Easily constructed and linear, the home harkens back to mid century modern pavilions with present day environmental sensitivities and harmony with the site. James Yochum

Spa-inspired features that were designed into the newly remodeled space included white shaker style cabinets, a new oversized soothing soaking tub by Hydro Systems with built-in custom armrests, Graff polished chrome squared-designed faucets and a water filler, providing the perfect amount of understated elegance.

All new finishes throughout this beautiful home, including new custom millwork, white quartz counter tops, built in appliances, new engineered white oak flooring, new wood windows, new custom fireplace with concrete hearth and built in metal shelving, new lighting package, and all new mechanical systems.

A tile and glass shower features a shower head rail system that is flanked by windows on both sides. The glass door swings out and in. The wall visible from the door when you walk in is a one inch glass mosaic tile that pulls all the colors from the room together. Brass plumbing fixtures and brass hardware add warmth. Limestone tile floors add texture. A closet built in on this side of the bathroom is his closet and features double hang on the left side, single hang above the drawer storage on the right. The windows in the shower allows the light from the window to pass through and brighten the space.
