This client is a fashion designer and she deals with color all day long. You could say her house in '50 Shades of Grey'. Her home was featured in Traditional Home. Having started with a lot of color and more of a basic, dated style, her vision and my experience brought this place to life.
We wanted to emphasize the architectural details of the home despite the neutral color palette that the client preferred. For showing purposes, we wanted to make sure we could really reflect the eclectic style of the home while capturing the unique details that make it stand out.

Megan Kime. My client is a librarian who loves all things Victorian. She had inherited a great deal of furniture as well as lot of momentos that she wanted to display. The issue was having these things appreciated as a collection and not looked upon as clutter. We took her barrister book cases and used them as the center of these built-in book cases. I then arranged her items and her HUGE collection of books on the shelves. We reupholstered the furniture and gave her a chandelier instead of a fan (so unexpected, right?).

This is a detail of the custom chest designed to look like drawers. When open, however, the doors give way to a great deal of storage and pull out shelves.

TENNESSEE RIVER HOUSE
A successful businessman sold his company, and as part of the deal, was required to move to Knoxville, Tennessee. Having long been used to lake living in his native Alabama, he and his wife wanted to find a spot that would allow them to continue their life long love of being close to the water. They located such a site on the Tennessee River in a place appropriately called “Lake Loudon”. The rolling pasture-like site had great water access and views, and few trees creating a wide open kind of scenery. They hoped to make a place for their grown children to return to them with their grandchildren. The design engages and embeds the house into the hillside to become part of the landscape rather than sit in the middle of the field. The house was rotated slightly away from a straight on view of the river to shield from western sun, in favor of the northern exposure which opened up longer views of the Tennessee River, also allowing for more liberal use of windows in the main living space.

The homeowners of this condo sought our assistance when downsizing from a large family home on Howe Sound to a small urban condo in Lower Lonsdale, North Vancouver. They asked us to incorporate many of their precious antiques and art pieces into the new design. Our challenges here were twofold; first, how to deal with the unconventional curved floor plan with vast South facing windows that provide a 180 degree view of downtown Vancouver, and second, how to successfully merge an eclectic collection of antique pieces into a modern setting. We began by updating most of their artwork with new matting and framing. We created a gallery effect by grouping like artwork together and displaying larger pieces on the sections of wall between the windows, lighting them with black wall sconces for a graphic effect. We re-upholstered their antique seating with more contemporary fabrics choices - a gray flannel on their Victorian fainting couch and a fun orange chenille animal print on their Louis style chairs. We selected black as an accent colour for many of the accessories as well as the dining room wall to give the space a sophisticated modern edge. The new pieces that we added, including the sofa, coffee table and dining light fixture are mid century inspired, bridging the gap between old and new. White walls and understated wallpaper provide the perfect backdrop for the colourful mix of antique pieces. Interior Design by Lori Steeves, Simply Home Decorating. Young woman in her 20s hired me to edit & organize her closets upon further discussion she decided she wanted the entire apartment refreshed, restyled and reflective mix of mid century modern, traditional & contemporary taste.
My specialty is re-styling & re-purposing homes and offices. Since her parents were paying for the closet cleaning, I made a deal that everything she sold: clothing, cameras, gold jewelry, expensive rug would be put into remaking the living room. With the exception the Greg Gossel collage everything was either found in a different room in the apartment or purchased with her newly acquired cash.
