This newly remodeled family home and in law unit in San Anselmo is 4000sf of light and space. The first designer was let go for presenting grey one too many times. My task was to skillfully blend all the color my clients wanted from their mix of Latin, Hispanic and Italian heritage and get it to read successfully. Wow, no easy feat. Clients alway teach us so much. I learned that much more color could work than I ever thought possible.

Located on a narrow urban infill lot, this single-family residence with attached ADU was fashioned for a food brand designer and restaurateur with an affinity for pre-war Parisian apartments. Use of minimal form and materials, on a cost-conscious budget, was intended to achieve a maximum atmospheric interior result. The daylight filled interior focuses on an easterly, inward facing courtyard through a rhythm of punched openings, western light is introduced for balancing only. The home is classically proportioned with subtle drywall details which recall decorative mouldings. From the primary room the Owner teaches cooking classes, entertains, and samples potential menu items while hosting dinner parties. The walls are adorned with her own paintings (made for her first restaurant with no budget). Health-conscious decisions were made both inside and out, selecting no V.O.C. finishes, wall- board and sheathing which prohibit mold and protective exterior coatings which prevent EMFs from penetrating the building envelope. The home is designed to nurture aging-in-place; maintenance friendly materials and plans for a future solar array will reduce overhead expenses in coming years.

This kitchen, in a 1920's Craftsman-style home, was given a fresh new look with a gut renovation that removed the wall between the kitchen and dining room allowing the light to spread through the main level. Customer's of mine bought their three year old son a race car toddler bed to support his current interests for Christmas. Before that his room was themed for nursery, designed with tree and monkey which is great for infants, but would no longer fit their new ideas. The homeowners also requested a time effective solution so we collaborated with one another and came up with the following Plan: I used the remaining paint from the original application to cover over the old work. This was the largest time savor in that the crib would be the only piece of furniture required to be moved. Prior to we agreed that subtlety was something we wanted to hold onto as much as possible. So I painted a running checker border, using only the accent color to the car and the original wall color rather than introducing an additional color which would have resulted in a louder feel. I designed the drag light as a teaching friendly tool. Building it with triangles at its base, rectangles within and circle silhouettes so that the toddler can easily identify with it's shapes. Using his current age I assigned him his first racing number and closed out this one day transformation with the finish line flag.

My latest project. I always strive to give my client the best that I can. I think in the this case I managed it. This living room was very dark and had no character at all, with old furniture and a carpet that was way past its life... I started by replacing the old carpet with a new lighter wheat color wood floor. That instantly brighten the space up. The walls I painted with light colors, a pale yellow and a pale blue wall color. Repainted all the trim in a cream color. On the one wall I designed a built in TV entertainment center. Guided the homeowners in choosing a light sectional. We also added wainscoting which we also painted a cream color. New window treatments adds more light. Then with accessories we pulled all the colors together. The deep orange is our pop color in the room. Part of my process is also to "teach" my clients on being comfortable with accessorizing when I am all done. So I leave enough "room" for them to add even more of their personal touch to the space.
