Inspiration for a transitional family room remodel in Minneapolis

We love to collaborate, whenever and wherever the opportunity arises. For this mountainside retreat, we entered at a unique point in the process—to collaborate on the interior architecture—lending our expertise in fine finishes and fixtures to complete the spaces, thereby creating the perfect backdrop for the family of furniture makers to fill in each vignette. Catering to a design-industry client meant we sourced with singularity and sophistication in mind, from matchless slabs of marble for the kitchen and master bath to timeless basin sinks that feel right at home on the frontier and custom lighting with both industrial and artistic influences. We let each detail speak for itself in situ.

The homeowners contacted Barbara Elza Hirsch to redesign three rooms. They were looking to create a New England Coastal inspired home with transitional, modern and Scandinavian influences. This Living Room was a blank slate room with lots of windows, vaulted ceiling with exposed wood beams, direct view and access to the backyard and pool. The floor was made of tumbled marble tile and the fireplace needed to be completely redesigned. This room was to be used as Living Room and a television was to be placed above the fireplace. Barbara came up with a fireplace mantel and surround design that was clean and streamlined and would blend well with the owners’ style. Black slate stone was used for the surround and the mantel is made of wood. The color scheme included pale blues, whites, greys and a light terra cotta color. Photography by Jared Kuzia

We remodeled this 5,400-square foot, 3-story home on ’s Second Street to give it a more current feel, with cleaner lines and textures. The result is more and less Old World Europe, which is exactly what we were going for. We worked with much of the client’s existing furniture, which has a southern flavor, compliments of its former South Carolina home. This was an additional challenge, because we had to integrate a variety of influences in an intentional and cohesive way. We painted nearly every surface white in the 5-bed, 6-bath home, and added light-colored window treatments, which brightened and opened the space. Additionally, we replaced all the light fixtures for a more integrated aesthetic. Well-selected accessories help pull the space together, infusing a consistent sense of peace and comfort.

A charming Craftsman influenced farmhouse we remodeled, including the master bedroom. An unexpected color palette was inspired by a custom designed crewel fabric made exclusively for the client! We designed and custom embroidered several of the fabrics and bedding elements in this bedroom including automated draperies! With a focus on crisp, modern silhouettes, this dining room projects a metropolitan frame of mind that appeals to a large demographic of consumers, whether they live in urban centers or elsewhere. Finished in a warm, inviting, brownstone stain with a classic, linen fabric chair, this dining room is influenced by a resurgence of modern design found on television, in magazines and blogs. Today's young, fashion-conscious consumers are looking for sophisticated profiles, fresh finishes, and distinctive details that blend style and purpose.
