This West Seattle specialties project was driven by an older couple’s vision to create an ADA-friendly DADU for future aging in place. Owning multiple homes in the area, their goal was to complete the build while they were still working and bringing in income, allowing them to rent out the space for additional income until retirement. The thoughtfully designed DADU features an attached garage with convenient alley access, ensuring easy entry. A wheelchair ramp and an open floor plan provide accessibility and seamless navigation, prioritizing comfort and mobility. The space was carefully crafted to serve as their primary residence in the future, combining functionality with long-term independence while offering rental income flexibility in the meantime.

This custom outdoor living project combines architectural structure, premium materials, and integrated amenities to create a highly functional, resort-style backyard. The existing deck was fully removed and replaced with a new patio cover featuring a clean 2/12 roof pitch, four large skylights with blinds, pine soffits, black hardware, and a durable PVC roofing system. The term “forever home” is often used to describe a house that portends to meet all of one’s current and future needs. Attaining such a residence often entails moving from one’s current home, leaving behind years of memories. We had the satisfaction of collaborating with a client to make their existing home into their forever home with smart adaptations that will allow them to age in place…in the house and neighborhood they love. The site is challenging in that the front of the home is perched atop a steep incline, and the home is primarily entered via a more accessible alley in the back. Thus, the home has two “fronts.” The existing low-slung ranch/bungalow had suited this couple for many years. However, newly retired with more free time, the couple sought to create a more gracious home to enjoy entertaining indoors and out, hosting guests for extended stays, and exploring their artistic sides in a proper studio space. A successful project would be a home filled with natural light that allowed them to age in place. A “happy house.” Inspiration for the design was found in the owners’ love of 1920s Arts & Crafts bungalows and bright colors. The existing home provided design cues, such as a porch with stucco columns and shallow arches that had been concealed by a previous renovation. Building upon that, we proposed to reconfigure the roof into a cross-gable to maximize interior space on the second floor while increasing the home’s contextuality with neighboring ones. A new primary bedroom suite with bathroom, his and hers closets, and a dressing room for the lady of the house were created. To maximizing versatility, the dressing room can also be utilized as a guest room. The balance of the second floor includes a hall bathroom and large office, gallery walls to display artwork, storage areas, and even some private meditation spaces with doors hidden behind bookcases. A first-floor addition expanded the casual dining room into the rear garden and created a new art studio. To imbue the middle of the house with light, skylights were introduced over the existing stair; new screened stairwells, inspired by the work of Louis Sullivan, filter the natural light. Acknowledging practical issues of aging in place, all openings were designed to allow easy passage by a wheelchair, and bathroom accommodations include grab bars and roll-in showers. Additionally, a small first floor bathroom was expanded and, along with an adjacent bedroom, will allow for single floor living if necessary. Exterior detailing was again influenced by the Arts & Crafts tradition: deep overhangs, brackets, and tapered columns. New cedar shingles were installed, the original porch restored, and the low arch motif was re-introduced into the design. A new garden of native plantings with an outdoor room anchors the house in the landscape. While one never truly know what the future holds, creating their “forever home” gives the inhabitants peace of mind that they can live in this place that brings them joy and gives them comfort now and, in the days, to come.

Breaking ground in 2013 and taking about 5 months to build, The Willow is home to a fun-loving family of five. When we were brought onboard the homeowners had a few main design points to ensure long term success. First, the need for a lot of room, either entertaining or relaxing the perfect place cannot be hard to find. True to syle and true to self. From the ground up this home would resonate with their lifestyle and sensibilities, setting the stage for natural materials and a shabby chic (chique) aesthetic. Lastly, to solidify a successful future the home had to somewhat organic. It had to be able to adapt, change and grow with (and like) all the members of the family. This new‑construction landscape installation in Elizabeth, Colorado was just getting underway when these photos were taken, giving a real behind‑the‑scenes look at how a custom landscape comes together. At this stage, we were focused on shaping the land, setting grades, and building the structural pieces that make the whole outdoor space work long‑term. It’s the part most people never see, but it’s where the future beauty and function really begin. Even in progress, you can see the layout taking shape—clean lines, defined spaces, and a design that fits naturally with Elizabeth’s open terrain. As the project moves forward, this foundation will support climate‑appropriate plantings, durable hardscape features, and a welcoming flow around the home. It’s the start of a landscape built to grow, evolve, and feel right at home in Colorado’s countryside.

These homeowners approached us with a partially finished basement lacking a bathroom and an inefficient laundry area. One of the homeowners used the unconditioned, cold, and damp space as a home office, making it uncomfortable and impractical. The goal was to create a fully functional and versatile living space by adding a full bathroom, a kitchenette, and a concealed laundry area. The space needed to be designed to serve the family’s daily needs, including accommodating their teenage son and functioning as potential rental income in the future. Now considered an ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit), the remodeled basement features a private entrance, bathroom, kitchenette, and bedroom, offering comfort, flexibility, and long-term value for the homeowners.

This thoughtfully renovated flip was designed with both beauty and longevity in mind, featuring an ADA-accessible private suite tailored for aging in place. The layout was fully re-imagined to improve flow and daily functionality—most notably by opening up the main living areas and removing an outdated corner brick fireplace, allowing for smoother circulation and a brighter, more connected home. The primary suite was significantly expanded to create a spacious bedroom, an oversized walk-in closet, and a serene master bathroom, transforming it into a true retreat. A new patio door was added to enhance indoor-outdoor connection and bring in natural light. The kitchen was refreshed with a timeless black-and-white palette, elevated by champagne bronze hardware, updated lighting, and charming shiplap accents. A dedicated coffee bar adds both function and personality, making the space perfect for everyday living and entertaining. Bathrooms were finished with extra-large format porcelain tile on both floors and walls, creating a clean, seamless, and spa-like feel while ensuring durability and easy maintenance. Throughout the main living areas, we installed rustic waterproof wood-look flooring in a mid-tone oak, offering warmth, texture, and long-term performance—ideal for multi-generational living. This renovation balances accessibility, comfort, and modern elegance, proving that a well-designed home can be both future-ready and beautifully timeless.

This Redmond, WA outdoor living transformation replaced an aging deck with a beautifully crafted 288-square-foot ground-level composite deck and custom freestanding timber-frame patio cover. Built with premium Trex Transcend® Lineage in Ashwood, the deck features flush-mounted beams, mitered corners, hidden fasteners, and a clean, modern finish designed for long-term durability and low maintenance. The custom timber-frame structure includes a striking king-post design, tongue-and-groove pine soffit, integrated lighting, electric heaters, future-ready ceiling fan wiring, and multiple convenience outlets. To maximize year-round comfort, the space was outfitted with two motorized Universal Screens featuring Twitchell Nano 95 fabric for privacy, shade, and weather protection. Finished with matching roofing, gutters, and thoughtful drainage solutions, this project creates a comfortable outdoor retreat that seamlessly extends the home's living space while providing protection from the Pacific Northwest elements.
