Plants for sun and part shade complete this project. They include Bulbine frutescens 'Hallmark', a non-stop bloomer in northern california with orange/yellow flowers, with Creeping Raspberry (Rubus pentalobus) a tough ground covers that forms a dense matt. Elfin thyme ground cover softens the concrete pathway, and mondo grass on other side of pathway with a Japanese Maple tree accented with Mexican pebbles. Completed in February 2014. For this backyard remodel we eliminated a thirsty lawn and added a multi-use patio. The industrial style patio structure includes a waterproof corrugated roof, steel ceiling fan and speakers with Wi-Fi. Privacy plantings, a cool water feature and a relaxing outdoor bathtub complete the garden. This yard is perfect for someone who wants to live outdoors all year long.

Colored concrete was cast in place for a front walk softened with creeping thyme. What used to be thirsty lawn in the parking strip was replaced with a carpet of very drought-tolerant Dymondia groundcover. Designed by Stephanie Curtis, Landscape Architect. The butler’s pantry of Innovation House is more than just a means to the dining room and kitchen. Beautifully designed and equally functional, the space’s custom cabinetry by Crystal Cabinetry in SW Meditative, completed with polished nickel hardware by Horton Brass, beautifully displays the family’s ceramic collection while cleverly hiding lesser used serving pieces and small appliances. The terrazzo countertops by Dexterra in crystal reflect light off of the material’s glass and aggregate mix for visual interest as well as extreme temperature durability for hot chafing dishes and platters during large gatherings. The space is also outfitted with a wine refrigerator by SubZero, and ice maker by Hoshizak to keep thirsty guests out of the cook’s way during large parties and family functions. While the unexpected color of the cabinetry is a visual surprise, the more traditional tones of the custom walnut backsplash and glimmering cabinet pulls blend effortlessly with the timeless design of the rest of the home’s 7,000 square foot main living area. This xeric landscape design is based on a desire for a front yard that is not only water wise, but colorful, interesting, and bird and bee friendly. I was able to use some water saving ideas for the garden while working around the homeowner’s beautiful and mature silver maple tree. We started by removing all of the thirsty turf and installing a drip irrigation system that efficiently waters each plant individually at its roots. I then designed a water wise front yard garden with bermed areas for contour, moss rock boulders for year round visual interest, pathways for navigating the garden, evergreen plants for winter greenery, and shrubs and perennials that bloom from early spring to late fall for as much color as possible through three seasons. The homeowners wanted a very detailed plant design, so I created two versions of the design, one with a plant key and the other with plant labels. The plant pallet features xeric shrubs and perennials that attract pollinators such as bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Many of the shrubs provide berries, not only for the birds, but also for the homeowners to enjoy. There are perennial herbs, medicinal plants and Colorado natives in the landscape design as well. This variety of plants transformed the front yard into a space that is water wise and functional as well as beautiful.

Dramatic architectural entry was created with an elegant stone walkway greeting guests at curb, flanked by lightposts to guide their way and an integrated undulating retaining wall.
