A new driveway design featuring large concrete slabs and small black pebbles set in a permeable resin in between. The front areas of this landscape in Bel Marin Keys, Novato, were transformed from a tired, water thirsty-lawn into a contemporary setting with dramatic concrete pavers leading to the home's entrance. Lawn replaced with colorful plants such as Orange Sedge, Phormiium, Bulbine frutescens 'Hallmark', and Rubus ground cover, along with and contemporary pavers that create a welcoming front entrance in Bel Marin Keys, Novato. Leucadendron 'Jester' provides beautiful colors and structure to this front garden. Complimented by Bulbine frutescens 'Hallmark', and Lomandra breeze. Positioned alongside the front entrance of large concrete pavers. The lower area of the front yard garden was dominated by a thirsty, weedy lawn and the slopes leading to the house were mostly unplanted. Stone steps were designed to take the owners and visitors to a shaded sitting area under a spreading Jacaranda tree. Foreground: Euphorbia 'Copton Ash', Snow In Summer, blue sedge, Safari conebush, Westringia 'Morning Light' and Dianella 'Cassa Blue'. With a limited budget, we were able to transform and update this front garden with a new modern pathway and small patio using full range Connecticut bluestone. Bulbine frutescens 'Hallmark' was planted along the pathway in mass. A variety of other low-water and low-maintenance plants. The black mulch completes this modern landscape design transformation. I included a selection of plants that provide a variety of heights, colors and textures. A great alternative to water- thirsty lawns, especially important for Northern California gardens. Water conserving plants mixed with moss rock fill the planting areas. They were selected to look decent year round - this is a winter shot with all the plants semi-dormant.

The potting shed is a charming glass enclosure with a sink and benches for flower arranging. The Dutch door and mullioned windows reflect the American vernacular architecture of the house.

This tired, unused San Francisco backyard was transformed into a modern, low-maintenance landscape with site-appropriate plantings enhanced by raised planting beds and a lead-free artificial lawn to replace the existing water-thirsty lawn. I created two separate "rooms" to break up the long narrow yard, and specified full range blue stone for the two small patio areas, connected by a curved pattern of rectangular pavers of the same natural stone. The raised concrete rectangular planting beds were incorporated to bring more movement and interest to the landscape along with gravel bed accents alongside. Some of the existing concrete remained, and was stained with a color to compliment the natural stone. These photos were taken over a three year period.
